Here is art, in the truest sense of the world, with "anonymous" artists... we do not know the names of the individuals or groups who created these pieces, but the lack of a signature on a piece only demonstrates that the culture did not provide for "signature" as we know them. When was the piece created? We have to be careful so that we are not biased by dates. Here at the Art of West Africa we have amassed a collection of pieces that are stirring, powerful, sometimes sexual, haunting and strangely eerie. We invite you to

Description
The country we refer to as Benin today was once the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey. It was eventually nicknamed the Slave Coast because of the significant trafficking through Dahomey of Africans ( against their will ) to the Americas, specifically to the slave markets of Brazil and the Caribbean.
It was transformed into a French Colony in the late 1800s, finally gaining its full independence from France in 1960. The country's current name ( Benin ) was adopted in 1975.
Subsequently, it witnessed a series of military coups, a mistaken association with Marxism, and the somewhat typical health and infrastructure problems indigenous to its neighbors, and most West African countries.
As a new democracy, the brightside is Benin's economy is growing and tourism is on the increase, especially along the coastal areas, and in the wildlife national parks of the north.
Much of the interior population is still dependent on subsistence farming; growing beans, corn and yams. Important cash crops include cotton, cocoa and coffee.

Home AN INTERIM PROGRAMME OF CULTURAL EXCHANGE ESTABLISHED The Government of South Africa, represented by the Minister of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, Dr Ben Ngubane, and the Republic of Benin, represented by the Minister of Arts, Culture and Sports, Mr Amos Bledge, have established an interim programme of exchange on cultural relations in Pretoria today, 4 March 2002. The two countries have agreed on the following interim executive programme of exchange: * South Africa will invite the National Ballet from Benin to participate in one of the major festivals this year. * The Republic of Benin will invite a South African Manifestation to Benin. * The agreement on Cultural Co-operation will be signed during Minister Ngubane's intended visit to Benin. It is our belief that this interim programme of exchange is a viable vehicle aimed at developing people by providing them with knowledge, skills and creates job opportunities to boost the economies of the two countries. Through this kind of co-operation, problems such as unemployment, HIV/AIDS, poverty and crime will be alleviated.
