The Second Taskforce Patrol to a Priority Forest Area (August 1990)
Wherein the anthropologist plays the role of a public opinion pollster in an area where most people think logging is the best thing since the invention of tinned fish, but finds that his findings are rapidly buried by foreign conservationists looking for a bunfight.
And what was the alternative? Not having a precise answer to this question, my colleagues and I did our best to improvise a floor show which contained a number of compelling images without making any specific promises. Talk about laws, policies, permits and agreements would surely lower the local brain pain threshold to an unacceptable degree. Our time was short, and so was the patience of our audience. So we talked about roads instead, not only because the logging company was promising to build them, but also because the Tok Pisin word rot By the time that this article was published, in January 1991, the Minister of Forests had already issued a Timber Permit to the local landowner company, and the cause appeared to be lost. The Task Force never did return to Lak, nor did it ever go anywhere else, so the scepticism of our local audience would seem to have been justified.

Last week in a meeting with Peace Corps Director Gaddi H. Vasquez, His Majesty King Mswati III praised Peace Corps for their previous 20 years of service and is please that Peace Corps volunteers will be returning to Swaziland to focus on HIV/AIDS education awareness and prevention.
From 1968 to 1996, 1,185 volunteers have served in Swaziland, chiefly working in the areas of education, community development, and agriculture. Peace Corps arrived in Swaziland within a year of its independence from Great Britain, and the original program’s objectives were to respond to Swaziland’s need for educated and trained human resources by raising general education and technical skill levels.

The predominant art forms are masks and figures, which were generally used in religious ceremonies. The decorative arts, especially in textiles and in the ornamentation of everyday tools, were a vital art in nearly all African cultures. The lack of archaeological excavations restricts knowledge of the antiquity of African art. As the value of these works was inseparable from their ritual use, no effort was made to preserve them as aesthetic accomplishments. Wood was one of the most frequently used materials—often embellished by clay, shells, beads, ivory, metal, feathers, and shredded raffia. The discussion in this article is limited to the works of the peoples of W and central Africa—the regions richest (because of the people's sedentary lifestyles) in indigenous art. Western Sudan and Guinea Coast In this region the style of woodcarving is abstract. Distortion is often used to emphasize features of spiritual significance. The figures of the Dogon tribe of central Mali stress the cylindrical shape of the torso. Some wooden carvings were made by an earlier people, the Tellem. Sculptures such as masks carved of soft wood are homes for the spirits and are discarded once they have been used in rituals. The Dogon have three distinctive styles of sculpture: masks incorporating recessed rectangles, ancestor sculptures carved in abstract geometric style used as architectural supports, and freestanding figures made in a cylindrical style. High-ranking Dogon families often had carved doors on their granaries.

[Exerpts of a speech to statesmen in the colony of Virginia by Willie Lynce, 1712] And in that same light, many diasporic Africans, through a fathom just as illusive "thank goodness", are re-claiming their own genetic African spirituality through Orisha worship and other traditional African religions with the same revered passion and dedication that their powerful grandmothers used to call the on the `Christian Lord'! Could it be, that the more things change, the more they remain the same? Or is it, "Everything that goes around, comes around?"

Mokele M'Bembe
There has always been question to whether dinosaurs still roam somewhere, somehow, and one place still up for questions is in Africa. The tales told of a creature living in the swamps and rivers. The animal was called, "Jago-Nini”. Explorers were told that it, "Comes out of the water and devours people." Footprints were examined by western scientists, which were, "about the size of a good frying pan in circumference and three claws instead o'five." Dispite great efforts explorers never saw direct evidence of the creature’s existence for themselves, only hearing the tales from the natives. So without hard proof it was hard to believe it. An exception was when, in 1932, British crypto zoologist Ivan Sanderson was traveling in Africa and came across large hippo-like tracks in a region with no hippos. The natives told him that a creature named the “mgbulu-eM’bembe” made them. Later Sanderson saw something in the water that seemed too large to be a hippo, but disappeared before he could investigate further. There were always stories from the natives that were told to the scientists who further examined the case in the creature.

This is the name conventionally given to the savanna region of West Africa. It is an area dominated by Islamic states situated at the southern ends of the trans-Saharan trade routes. Back to african tribe list The sculpture here is characterized by schematic styles of representation. Some commentators have interpreted these styles as an accommodation to the Islamic domination of the area, but this is probably not an adequate explanation since Islam in West Africa has either merely tolerated or actually destroyed such traditions while exerting other influences.

When Math Worlds Collide: Intention and Invention in Ethnomathematics (abstract) Ethnomathematics is a relatively new discipline which investigates mathematical knowledge in small-scale, indigenous cultures. This essay locates ethnomathematics as one of five distinct subfields within a general anthropology of mathematics, and describes interaction between cultural and epistemological features which have created these divisions. It reviews the political and pedagogical issues in which ethnomathematics research and practice are immersed, and examines the possibilities for both conflict and collaboration with the goals, theories and methods of social constructivism.
Introduction
Ethnomathematics is typically defined as the study of mathematical concepts in small-scale or indigenous cultures. Working in many different areas of the world, Ascher Closs (1986), Crump (1990)
