History The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Caribe Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3 rd century AD and reached its height between the 6 th and 8 th centuries. By the 14 th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16 th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. The Spanish th century. When piracy became passé, many of the pirates began working in the logging trade. Belize was British by tradition and sympathy by the time that a British force routed the Spanish armada off St George's Caye in 1798, delivering Belize from Spanish rule. In 1862, Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of British Honduras The start of the 20 th century was tough for Belize, as British mismanagement fuelled claims for independence. After

A Brief History of Belize
The first people of Belize were the Maya. Over a million people once lived in the area we now call Belize. The first European settlers to Belize were British pirates who used Belize as a base from which they raided Spanish ships (1850's) "Treaty of Madrid", outlaws piracy, the pirates had to find an honest living. They soon found a new treasure in the logwood trade. The settlement was established and the new settlers were called the Baymen Spain laid claim to Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and the area now known as Belize No Spanish colonies were ever established in the area of Belize, still Spain never liked the idea of British squatters in her land and this led to frequent wars with the Spanish and settlers The most famous of these was the battle of St. George's Caye (key) (where the majority of the settlers lived) where the Baymen soundly defeated the Spanish

THE GREATEST SCAM IN BELIZE'S HISTORY
Produced by the Belize Development Trust

The Reporter, June 11, 2000 The case against the Social Security Board, which has paid out $4.86 million in worker savings to buy $1.34 million worth of shares Belize Electric Company continues to rile Belizeans of all ages who are calling it the greatest scam of all time. At all material times, Ralph Fonseca was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Belize Electricity Board. He also represented himself as Minister of Finance when in actual fact he was only the Minister of State in the Ministry of the Prime Minister. Opening Moves In January 1991, Fonseca invited bids from international companies to construct and operate a hydroelectric facility on the Macal River. At the same time he missioned Canadian consultants CI Power to perform a feasibility study for the said project. On April 19,1991, four months before the Canadian study was completed, he signed a contract to involve the government of Belize and Belize Electricity Limited in a tri-partite arrangement with DEI IEEI and BEL. Rock solid guarantees such as 120 KVa take-or-pay were also part of the deal.

Belize History and Culture
HISTORY OF BELIZE The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites, notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich, reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

San Ignacio - History The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Carib Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic Period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3rd century AD and reached its height between the 6th and 8th centuries. By the 14th century it was in serious decline. An anti-Spanish rebellion broke out in 1638, driving out the Europeans for almost sixty years. The rebels of Tipu continued to hold on to their Maya customs. The Spaniards eventually gained control of Tipu in 1707, forcing the Mayas to Lake Peten. During the time the Mayas were in Tipu they had built only a few masonry buildings of which none remain. After WWII, Belize's economy weakened, leading to agitation for independence. Democratic political parties and institutions were formed and self-government was granted in 1964. The government decided to build a new capital at Belmopan in 1970, after Hurricane Hattie all but destroyed Belize City in 1961. Full independence became a reality in September 1981 when British Honduras officially became Belize. Guatemala, which had territorial claims on Belize, threatened war in 1972, but British troops were stationed in Belize to make sure the dispute remained purely diplomatic. During the volatile 1980s, Belize remained stable and pro-US, thanks predominantly to large influxes of US aid. In 1992, a new Guatemalan government recognized Belize's territorial integrity. The British garrison was withdrawn in 1994; Belize now has a standing army of only 550 soldiers.

By the 14th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. The Spanish considered Belize a backwater suitable only for cutting logwood to be used for dye. Although the Spanish "owned" Belize, they did not rule it. The lack of effective government and the safety afforded by the reef attracted English and Scottish pirates during the 17th century.
