History of Belize for Travelers Belize History in Brief .... Numerous ruins indicate that for hundreds of years Belize was heavily populated by around one million Maya, whose relatively advanced civilization reached its height between AD. 250 and 900. Today a small population still exists in Belize, predominantly in Toledo, the southern-most district.
The first reference to European settlement in the colony was in 1638. British logwood cutters, known as the Baymen, were the first Europeans to settle in the area. The Baymen were dependent on slave labor for their logwood operations. Logwood was used to produce purple and red dyes. These early settlements were subjected to attacks from neighboring Spanish settlements for the next 150 years.

[edit this] [Upload image] The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites notably Caracol Lamanai Lubaantun Altun Ha and Xunantunich reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years more English settlements were established. This period was also marked by piracy indiscriminate logging and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the Colony of British Honduras until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973 and full independence was granted on September 21 1981. Queen Elizabeth II remains head of state represented by the Governor General.

Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic Period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3rd century AD and reached its height between the 6th and 8th centuries. By the 14th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. The Spanish considered Belize a backwater suitable only for cutting logwood to be used for dye. Although the Spanish 'owned' Belize, they did not rule it. The lack of effective government and the safety afforded by the reef attracted English and Scottish pirates during the 17th century. When piracy became passé, many of the pirates began working in the logging trade. Belize was British by tradition and sympathy by the time that a British force routed the Spanish armada off St George's Caye in 1798, delivering Belize from Spanish rule. In 1862, while the USA was embroiled in its Civil War and unable to enforce the terms of the Monroe Doctrine, Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of British Honduras. After WWII, Belize's economy weakened, leading to agitation for independence.

In 1798 it was apparent that the Spanish were planning to invade, Basil Jones assisted the Baymen acting as a lookout, from his plantation on Ambergris Caye. When the inevitable arrival of the Spanish Fleet, did occur, some where around September 10, 1798, Basil spotted the approaching Fleet and went by boat to St. Georges Caye to warn the Baymen Commander.

On September 13, 1869, Ambergris Caye was auctioned off to settle the estate of former owners. James Hume Blake bought Ambergris Caye for $625 in gold, and that began the Blake Dynasty that lasted for some ninety years.
On 10th February 1887 Registry records show that the Blakes gave a twenty-one year lease of the Robles and the Basil Jones Savannah, at an annual rent of twenty dollars to George James Parham. Parham was an expatriate Englishman, a merchant and chicle contractor, who later married Juanita Blake, one of Blakes two daughters.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW Belize, with an area of 8,867 sq. miles or 23,000 sq. kilometers and a population of 205,000 inhabitants, is an independent English speaking country in Central America. It has often times been referred to as the bridge between the Caribbean and Central America and remains a part of the British Commonwealth of Nations with Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain as the titular Head of State. A Prime Minister and Cabinet make up the executive branch, while a 29 member elected House of Representatives and 8 member appointed Senate form a bicameral legislature. The Government of Bleize is operated on the principles of parliamentary democracy, based on the Westminister System. Belize, over the years has been able to develop an economic environment where there is a dynamic working relationship between the public sector and the private sector. Its exports of goods and services account for more than 50% of GDP. Belize's leading exports of sugar, citrus and bananas, are being cmplimented by the successful development of new products for export such as shrimp, papayas and other tropical fruits. At the same time Government encourages the development of new ways of producing and marketing traditional products. This is in response to its call for economic diversification.

In pre-Columbian times Belize was part of the territory of the Maya. It was included in the Viceroyalty of New Spain in the 1500s, and sometime later English woodcutters from Jamaica established a settlement on the Belize River. During the wars between England and Spain in the 1700s, Spain failed to dislodge the British from the area. In 1836, after the emancipation of Central America from Spanish rule, the British claimed the right to administer the region; it was declared a British colony, subordinate to Jamaica, in 1862 and an independent crown colony in 1884. Long-range constitutional reforms were initiated by the British in 1954, resulting in a new constitution ten years later. Progress toward independence, however, was hampered by an old Guatemalan claim to sovereignty over the territory. When Belize finally attained full independence on September 21, 1981, Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation; about 1,500 British troops remained to protect Belize from the Guatemalan threat. The territory’s first general election, in 1954, was won by the People’s United Party (PUP), headed by independence leader George Price. Under Price, the PUP won all subsequent elections until 1984, when the first national election was held. The PUP was defeated by the United Democratic Party (UDP), and UDP leader Manuel Esquivel replaced Price as prime minister. Price returned to power after the elections of September 1989. In May 1993 the United Kingdom announced that it would end its military involvement in Belize. All British soldiers were withdrawn in 1994, apart from a small contingent of troops who remained to train Belizean troops.

It became a colony of Great Britain in 1840, known as British Honduras, and a Crown colony in 1862. Full internal self-government was granted in Jan. 1964. In 1973, the country changed its name to Belize. Belize became independent on Sept. 21, 1981. But Guatemala, which had made claims on the territory since the 1800s, refused to recognize it. British troops remained in the country to defend it. Although the dispute between Guatemala and Great Britain remained unresolved, Guatemala recognized Belize's sovereignty in Sept. 1991. Guatemala, however, still claims more than half of Belize’s territory.

Belize Time and Date Belize History Back to Top Two themes dominate the history of Belize: the outward fight to establish and maintain an English-speaking nation in an area controlled by Hispanic peoples and culture, and the inward interaction between groups of different races and cultural backgrounds. Understanding contemporary social relations and the politics of Belize depends on understanding these various groups and their interpretations of past events. The first English settlers arrived in the early 1600s in present-day Belize. Their reached marked the beginning of a conflict with neighboring Spanish settlers that lasted for centuries. For the first 200 years, this conflict was part of the larger rivalry between Britain and Spain. In the early 1800s, after most of the Spanish colonies in the New World became independent, the conflict in Belize evolved into a Guatemalan territorial claim on the area that continued into the 1990s. Like many nations that have newly emerged from colonialism, Belize has a population that is fragmented into many racial and cultural groups. The two largest groups are the Creoles, English-speaking or Creole-speaking blacks and people of mixed African and European heritage, and the Mestizos, Spanish-speaking people of mixed Mayan and Spanish European. Two other remarkable groups are the Garifuna, a group of African and Carib ancestry originally from the Lesser Antilles, and the Maya, descendants of the original inhabitants of Belize.
