Berkeley Geography Department and GeoMap Mayan Atlas Web site The Mayan Atlas was made by the forty-two Ke'Kechi and Mopan communities of southern Belize. The maps, text, photographs, drawings and interviews were done by Maya village researchers and cartographers elected by the communities. In their own words and with their own maps, the Maya describe their culture and rain forest, and their desire to protect and manage their own land. The Atlas is an important step in developing a Mayan Homeland. The Mayan researchers and cartographers made the Atlas so that their communities, young people and leaders would comprehensive, village-by-village, regional understanding of the state of Maya nature and human resources and their their traditions of living in harmony with nature-what is being lost and what needs to be preserved and developed. The Atlas is a window to both the ancient and modern Maya world. Top History Maya Homeland People and Places ... Cultural Geography
After completing the map of Belize, I came to many conclusions about the political geography of this state. There seemed to be more centrifugal forces acting upon Belize, which makes it difficult for them to achieve the ideal nation-state status. This is a small country, which is a centripetal force, but the population appears to be unevenly distributed, which is a centrifugal force. Belize is 8,867 square miles and has a population of 219,296, which is 25 people per square mile. In comparison, the state of Vermont is about the same size of Belize and has about four times as many people living there.
Belize is elongated, which is a centrifugal force because it is difficult to keep contact with all members of the state. It's capitol, Belmopan, as well as Belize City are core areas for Belize, a centripetal force. Belmopan is in a relatively central location, a centripetal force, and therefore has easy access to the other cities. Belize has a coastal area on the Caribbean Sea, and therefore has free access to the rest of the world. This is good for trade and travel and is a centripetal force.

    Belize Background:
Territorial disputes between the UK and Guatemala delayed the independence of Belize (formerly British Honduras) until 1981. Guatemala refused to recognize the new nation until 1992. Tourism has become the mainstay of the economy. The country remains plagued by high unemployment, growing involvement in the South American drug trade, and increased urban crime.

BELIZE Telephone / Fax Number: E-mail: habelize@btl.net ABOUT BELIZE Country Description Belize is a developing country with a very small domestic tax base. Gross Domestic Product for 1999 was US$673.5 million with an annual per capita income at approximately US$5,010. Approximately 50% of working age adults are employed and 12.8% are unemployed and want work. 75% of the population is age 34 and under. Similar to other Caribbean countries, consumer goods and services in Belize are expensive, as there is very little industry or manufacturing. Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, and as a result, it has closer ties with its Caribbean neighbors than with Latin America. Some trade has developed with Guatemala and Mexico, but the vast majority of imports are from the United States. Economy is based on trade in sugar, bananas, tourism and fishing. Need for Housing Belize City has a great number of old, rundown wooden houses, which are infested with termites and wood lice. Many of these houses are situated on shaky wooden posts. On the outskirts of the city, there are numerous shacks erected by squatters. The terrain in Belize City, along with most of the coastline, is swamp. All of Belize City has been built on fill, which poses economical and technical challenges to building decent houses at affordable prices. Belize City has an adequate infrastructure in place in most areas of the city to supply potable water, electricity and storm drainage. Approximately 50% of the buildings use septic tanks with leach systems that drain to the already saturated soil.
