Belize is located on the Caribbean coast of northern Central America. It shares a border on the north with the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, on the west with the Guatemalan department of Petén, and on the south with the Guatemalan department of Izabal. To the east in the Caribbean Sea, the second-longest barrier reef in the world flanks much of the 386 kilometers of predominantly marshy coastline. Small cay (see Glossary) islands totaling about 690 square kilometers, dot the reef. The area of the country totals 22,960 square kilometers, an area slightly larger than El Salvador or Massachusetts. The abundance of lagoons along the coasts and in the northern interior reduces the actual land area to 21,400 square kilometers (see fig. 11 Belize is shaped like a rectangle that extends about 280 kilometers north-south and about 100 kilometers east-west, with a total land boundary length of 516 kilometers. The undulating courses of two rivers, the Hondo and the Sarstoon, define much of the course of the country's northern and southern boundaries. The western border follows no natural features and runs north-south through lowland forest and highland plateau. Data as of January 1992

Belize : Geography The Northern half of Belize consists of lowlands. The South and West are dominated by mountain ranges, most notably the heavily forested Maya mountains, which rise up to 3,675 ft. The Cockscomb range lies to the East, and the Mountain Pine Ridge to the West. More than 65 per cent of the country is swathed in forests. Deciduous trees are found in the north; tropical hardwood trees predominate in the south. Principal species include the commercially important mahogany, cedar, and rosewood, as well as pine, oak, and palms. Wildlife includes jaguar, deer, tapir, and numerous species of birds and reptiles. The principal rivers are the Belize River; the Río Azul, which forms much of the boundary with Mexico; and the Sarstún River, which forms the South-Western boundary with Guatemala.
The Caribbean coastline comprises many salt and freshwater lagoons, palm-fringed white sandy beaches and numerous idyllic small islands (Cayes). The shallow offshore Cayes straddle a coral reef second only in size to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.

The northern half of the mainland of Belize is a plain that was once the bed of a sea. The land is covered with a thin layer of soil, that supports scrub vegetation and dense hardwood tropical forest.
The central part of Belize consists of sandy soil that supports large savannas. Approximately thirty miles southwest of Belize City, the land begins to rise dramatically to between 1,500 and 3,680 feet above sea level into the enchanting Mountain Pine Ridge Area and the Maya Mountains.
The southern part of Belize, with its watershed to the southeast from the Maya Mountains, consists of short rivers that rush through slopes combed with overhanging ledges and caves. The rivers, carrying sand, clay and silt, have enriched the coastal belt over the years, allowing Belize to develop significant agricultural products such as citrus and bananas. Southern Belize has a true tropical rain forest that is rich with ferns, palms, lianas, and tropical hardwoods.

With a population of approximately 270,000, Belize sits on the Caribbean coast of Central America. Bordered by Mexico in the north, Guatemala in the west and south, and by the Caribbean Sea in the east, Belize occupies some 8,867 square miles of land with over 200 cayes offshore. Mainland Belize consists of 180 miles in length from the Mexican border in the north to Guatemalan border in the south. Its widest spot stretches 68 miles across. Hummingbird Highway All coastal expanses and most of the northern portion of the country are relatively flat with mangrove swamps and pine savannahs defining their landscapes. However, the land rises in the south and west, with the majestic Maya Mountains elevating to over 3000 feet above sea level; Victoria Peak being Belize's highest point, soaring 3,675 feet. GEOGRAPHY The cayes (pronounced keys), the offshore atolls, and the barrier reef are on of the main attraction to Belize. The barrier reef, which is 185 miles long, is the longest in the Western Hemisphere. The cayes are islands, that are located between the mainland and the barrier reef, on the barrier reef, and on or within the barrier reef perimeters of the offshore atolls. Although the mangrove cayes are normally uninhabitable by humans, they do provide a superior habitat for birds and marine life. Many birds, fish, shellfish, and marine organisms begin their lives within the protection of the mangrove. On the other hand, the island cayes, which are distinguishable by their palm trees, have provided the foundation for the development of many fine resorts to serve the water sports enthusiasts and the marine naturalists. The cayes and atolls provide superior opportunity for SCUBA diving, snorkeling, fishing, boating, sailing, sailboarding, and sea kayaking, as well as habitat for both nesting birds and turtles. The northern half of the mainland of Belize is a plain that was once the bed of a sea. The land is covered with a thin layer of soil, that supports scrub vegetation and dense hardwood tropical forest. The coastal area is neither land nor sea, but a sodden, swampy transition between the two. It consists of mangrove and grasses, and is bordered by tussock grasses, cypress, and sycamore where the land separates the water.
