    San Ignacio Cayo, Belize
view of part of San Ignacio Cayo San Ignacio Cayo is a town in the west of the nation of Belize; it is capital of Belize's Cayo District. San Ignacio Cayo is on the banks of the Macal River, a branch of the Belize River, about 72 miles (115 kilometres) west of Belize City and 22 miles (35 km) from Belmopan. The population is largely Maya Indian and Mestizo, with some Lebanese. San Ignacio also boasts a fairly large Chinese population, most of whom emigrated from Guangzhou in waves in the mid-20th century. As a result, the town is peppered with Chinese restaurants(there are at least four) and Chinese markets(at least five.) In recent years San Ignacio has absorbed the formerly separate village of Santa Elena. Santa Elena stands on the other side of the river, which is spanned here by the Hawkesworth Suspension Bridge. According to the 2000 census, San Ignacio/Santa Elena had a population of 13,545 people. The ancient Maya ruins of Xunantunich and Cahal Pech are nearby.

    Adventures in Belize
The fame of Belize as a travel destination has been built on the caye islands of Ambergris and Caulker, yet the roads less traveled hold the true cultural and outdoor discoveries. The dozens of tiny cayes lining the barrier reef further south are quiet treasures. The southern coastal and inland regions are more isolated and less known and are home to two indigenous groups. The Garifuna people have kept their culture and still live from the sea in a few coastal villages. Our documentaries, photos, and travel tips give you all you need to discover Belize by yourself.

The main culture on Caye Caulker is Mestizo, but several others are also represented. Carnival on Caye Caulker
Photo by Judy Lumb Mestizo Mestizos are a Spanish-speaking people descended from Yucatec Maya and Spanish. The first Mestizos migrated from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico during the Caste Wars of the mid 19th century. Mestizos were the founders and are still the majority population of Caye Caulker. Maya The Maya are the indigenous culture of much of Central America, including Belize. It is estimated that around a million of the Maya at one time populated Belize, but today there are only about thirty thousand. The arrival of the Spanish, through violence and disease, decimated a large portion of the Maya population. Throughout the Belize mainland are numerous Mayan ruins, the most accessible of which is Altun Ha. Look for a tour from Caye Caulker by boat to Altun Ha on the mainland. Garifuna Creole Creoles are a mixture of European, African and other races. The Creole language is widely spoken here. It is derived from English, spoken rapidly, uses Spanish vowel sounds and has its own unique grammar. Mennonite The Mennonites, originally from Russia and Germany, immigrated to Belize from Mexico in the late 1950's. Mennonites have formed productive agricultural communities in Belize and their excellent vegetables, dairy and poultry are sold in all the stores on Caye Caulker. Most of the wooden furniture here was made by the skilled Mennonite carpenters.

This essay, written by a recent participant in this program, will help you better understand what students experience during their semester abroad.
    By Leanna Barlow
SIT Study Abroad Participant, Fall 2002 The SIT Belize program was an amazing, life-changing experience. During my semester abroad I conquered many fears, from spending four months with 14 people I hadn't met before, to caving. I integrated myself into a new culture, living with different families from all over the country - including a Mayan family in a remote village. I also made many life-long friends, whom I continue to cherish especially now after the program has ended. My greatest challenge at first was adjusting to the new people that I was living with. It's funny that what was at first my greatest challenge, turned out in the end to also be my greatest blessing. As the semester progressed, our schedule also became more rigorous as we camped for two weeks straight, lived in various homestay families, and traveled into Guatemala and Mexico. It took a lot of energy to stay on the move for such a long period of time, but the insight that I gained into the country of Belize, its people, and natural environment through our travels is priceless and an unforgettable aspect of the program.

Meeting Place: Los Angeles, CA THE PROJECT Off the Belize coast exists the second largest barrier reef in the world. Studded with mangrove and coconut palmed cayes, and guarded by atolls to the east, the 180-mile-long reef is ecologically complex and intimately tied to the rainforests through its many water courses delivering nutrients to the sea. In this system, dazzling numbers and varieties of plants and animals are supported including thirty coral species, sea turtles, rays, eel, and over 250 varieties of fish living in and along the reef system. Snorkeling through the reef environment, we will study closely the ecology of the system, census life forms, collect evidence of human disturbance, and assess the impact of increased human use. By the end of each project, all of us will have experienced unparalleled environmental and cultural diversity, developed the ability to employ scientific field methods, evaluated firsthand a variety of conservation management techniques, and explored the human element in wildland/wildlife stewardship.
