History
The first inhabitants in what is now Belize who developed a succinct culture were the Maya. Belize was an important part in the great Mayan Empire. The Maya Empire was possibly the most sophisticated civilization in the ancient Americas. Including modern day southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, and Honduras, the Mayas reached their peak in the 6th, 7th, and 8th centuries AD. However, by the 14TH Century this once great civilization mysteriously declined. By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16TH Century, Maya presence was barely felt. Even though the Spanish ruled Belize since their arrival in the new world, they were never able to truly control the area. For them, Belize was a backwater, good only for cutting dye wood. This lack of control eventually allowed for pirates from England and Scotland to come in and find sanctuary during the 17th century. When pirating became a less popular profession, these former buccaneers turned to cutting log wood in the rich tropical forests of Belize.

Mysteries of the Maya Come Alive in Belize
Belize Preserves Ancient Culture and Offers Tourists A Glimpse At The Past For the people of Belize, Mundo Maya (The World of the Maya) is more than a joint program established with its neighbors to help preserve the rich Maya culture. It is a deep-rooted passion that is felt in every corner of this small Central American country. While deeply immersed in the traditions of the Maya, Belize is now the only English-speaking country in the Maya world. The spirit of the Mundo Maya is in the faces of Garifuna (Carib-Indian) and Creole children, as they help prepare a daily meal in their villages. It is in the women dressed in traditional, colorful garb as they celebrate the Deer Dance, a nine-day Maya cultural celebration, or washing the family's clothes, waist-deep in creeks. It can also be found in the many professional guides who will gladly explain the mystical Maya culture at any one of the hundreds of Maya sites within Belize.

66. A Brief Cultural History Of Belize
This is the story of the Garifuna people of belize.
http://www.jaguarreef.com/belize-culture.htm
CULTURE A short history of the Garifunas
The Jaguar Reef Lodge is located just one mile from the fascinating Garifuna village of Hopkins.
One of the most remarkable things about the Garifunas is their brief but unusual history. They came into existence almost by accident. R oots in the slave trade
In 1634, English slave ships sailing from Africa were wrecked off the coast of the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent. The Africans who staggered ashore joined the Arawak Indians living there and started a new life. The blending of these two cultures created the Garifunas. As time went on, the Garifunas on St. Vincent farmed and fished and joined the French who had set up farming enterprises. It was a time when the English were in conflict with the French. The English wanted to develop St. Vincent for their sugar plantations. F rom St. Vincent to Honduras
Two years of war by the English against the French and Garifuna ended in 1797. The English won, and just to be sure they will not longer be threatened by the Garifunas who proved to be fierce guerilla fighters, they packed up most of them, around 3,000 in 10 ships. The English sailed them to the Island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras and left them there. The Garifunas discovered that the Island was not a good place to start over, and soon headed to the mainland of Honduras, where they founded villages along the coast. From Honduras they spread to British Honduras (Belize).

Belize's premiere search engine The settlers who came from Mexico brought with them their Spanish Language, Catholic and Mexican traditions and a rich culture. The official language of Belize is English and most islanders speak and understand English but the main language is still Spanish. The Maya that some of the present settlers' ancestors once spoke is no longer spoken. Islanders also speak Creole, a language or dialect derived from the English language. Due to the influence of Maya, Creole and English languages, most of the islanders speak today what is known as "kitchen Spanish" - informal Spanish that incorporates English, Maya and Creole words. An example is "pullar". The word comes from the English root "pull" and adds a Spanish suffix "ar". The English definition is "pull". The Mexican settlers also brought with them a distinctly rich culture with traditions comprised of Spanish, Mayan and Catholic elements. Many of these traditions are still followed today. Some such of these is the observance of religious feast days and celebrations such as the Lenten Season, an important aspect of Catholicism; regular attendance at Church especially at Easter and Christmas and the celebration of Sacraments. Easter Procession and Novenas (prayers) are spectacular annual events and have the participation of almost the entire local population of San Pedro Town.

I t is always wonderful to find people interested in the well-being of the Belizean youth. It is always greater to find an individual that not only cares about their education but cares to the extent to try and make education a higher priority to students. About a year ago, Ian Anderson of the Caves Branch Jungle Lodge came up with an idea to help in the education of disadvantaged children. His initial plan was to help create an organization that would offer support and encouragement to students who were in danger of failing their classes or dropping out of school. After presenting his idea to several towns and having the response be minimal, Anderson was not deterred. His efforts began to see fruition when he started his project with 20 students from the Belmopan Comprehensive School. These students were in danger of failing altogether if they did not meet certain requirements. With the help of the project BADCATS, teachers and other members of Belmopan Town, these students were given extra attention and encouragement to continue studying. This followed the philosophy of the BADCATS organization which explains that children who are at the brink of dropping out of school or failing entirely will improve their attitude if given the right attention. Essentially, the use of the proverbial “dangling carrot” can help immensely.

On Thursday, Pageant Night, hundreds gathered to witness the crowning of the Queen of the Mundo Maya. Each of the five contestants proudly represented her country, but it was Miss Leilah Pandy, the current Miss Belize, who dazzled the audience with the grace, poise and confidence of a seasoned pageant contestant. From the charming way she introduced herself in "Spanglish" to the way she described the Belize Barrier Reef in her explanation of Belize's culture, Miss Belize "blew everyone away" during the competition. Donning a flowing robe adorned with the "jewels" of our Caribbean, Miss Pandy also won the award for Cultural Presentation.

    Introduction to Belize
Belize is a subtropical country situated on the East Coast of Central America in the heart of the Caribbean Basin. It borders with Mexico to the North and Guatemala on the west. On the east is the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Belize has a 174-mile coastline that is home to the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere. The coast mangroves constitute an excellent habitat for birds, fish, shellfish and marine organisms. Belize is also graced with tropical forests, mountains and superior agricultural land. The Mayan history in Belize is extremely rich. With more than 600 Maya cities, Belize is the center of the ancient Maya world and an active participant in the Mundo Maya program.

    Belize History and Culture
HISTORY OF BELIZE The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites, notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich, reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period also was marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century but Belize was not formally termed the "Colony of British Honduras" until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.
