41. Mostly Maya
Dwayne Shreve's budget travel guide to Maya ruins and culture in Southern Mexico, belize, Honduras and El Salvador, including links to local bus and air schedules.
http://www.mostlymaya.com/
Mostly Maya; An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget and other travel in the Maya areas and in the ruins in Mesoamerica simpler to arrange. I look for links which are relevant to planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done using the additional advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. I also look for better ways to get to some of the more obscure locations. The site is a hobby and it takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other local services. I believe that it is better to deal directly with locally owned businesses where possible, because they are more likely to keep both income and profits within the local economies. I also plug places or services I like while traveling in Maya areas. You will also find pages occasionally add pages for commercial and non-commercial places that I like while traveling, which have no website. See additional information Who are the Maya?

Belize Culture
Belize is a cultural anomaly in Central America , with a society oriented more to Britain , the English-speaking Caribbean countries, and North America , than to neighboring Spanish-speaking republics. During the 1980s, efforts to forge a common national identity among a small, multiethnic population challenged the colonial orientations of Belizean society. Regional conflicts, migration, and intensified relationships with the United States also posed challenges. The deepening of social, economic, and political ties to the United States during the 1980s prompted critics in Belize and abroad to complain that the country merely exchanged one colonial master for another. In addition, emigration of Belizeans to the United States and of Central Americans to Belize further challenged Belizean society, which was already deeply divided by differences of ethnicity, race, and class.

Southern Belize - Maya, Rainforest, Coral Reef
Toledo, the southernmost district of Belize, is 1669 square miles of rainforest, mountains, rivers, and Maya Villages. Toledans often refer to their home as "the forgotten land"-it is the least visited destination in Belize.
Early morning, Toledo rainforest, Southern Belize As the most sparsely populated and least developed region in the country, Toledo is certainly not for the ordinary tourist. However, for those with the spirit to venture off the beaten track, the natural and cultural diversity of Toledo makes a visit to a Southern Belize an unique adventure. The land is blanketed with some of the most pristine rainforest in Belize. The uplands to the Northwest, consist of the foothills of the Maya Mountains bordered by limestone outcrops - rugged, unexplored territory. The coastal lowlands consist of softer grounds, formed from the flood deposits of the many rivers draining the uplands. Towering riverine forests line the rivers and flood plains, while pine ridge savannahs and mangrove surround coastal lagoons.

Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves.More than 40% of the population are Mestizos. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. Creoles The Creoles are descendants of British settlers and African slaves and can be more recognized by their values and way of life rather than by a biological manner. Belmopan - Culture Mayan woman The Maya built breathtaking temple complexes aligned to the movement of celestial bodies. Although they remained technically a Stone Age culture, they also developed sophisticated mathematics, astronomy and calendars. The Spanish constructed some plain stone churches, but the modern architecture is predominantly British Caribbean in style. Belize is officially English-speaking, but the Creoles (the largest ethnic group) speak their own colorful dialect as well as standard English. Spanish is the main language in the north and some towns in the west. You may also hear Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi and Garifuna (the language of the Garinagu people of Stann Creek district) being spoken. The majority of Belize's population are Roman Catholics, but British influence has created a sizable and varied protestant congregation, including German Swiss Mennonites. The Mayan practice of Catholicism is a fascinating fusion of shamanist-animist and Christian ritual. Belize has never really developed a national cuisine. Its cooking borrows elements from the UK, the USA, Mexico and the Caribbean. The traditional staples are rice and beans. These are often eaten with chicken, pork, beef, fish or vegetables. Coconut milk and fried plantain add a tropical flavor. Exotic traditional foods include armadillo, venison and paca (a small brown-spotted rodent similar to a guinea pig).

Belize City - Culture B elize is located on the Eastern or Caribbean coast of Central America, bounded on the north and part of the west by Mexico and on the South and the remainder of the West by Guatemala. The inner coastal waters sheltered by the Barrier Reef (the 2nd largest in the world at 180 miles), and are dotted with over 200 islands, atolls and islets called "cayes" extending the entire length of the country. Belize covers approximately 8,866 miles of territory; its mainland is approximately 180 miles long and 68 miles wide at its widest point. Belize City On the mainland, ancient Mayan temples and monuments dating back thousands of years are an archaeologist's fantasyland. With more than 600 Maya cities, Belize is the center of the ancient Maya world and an active participant in the Mundo Maya programme. In the interior, an unspoiled world of lush tropical rain forests awaits you. Here you will find a colourful collage of animal and plant populations, as well as limestone caves, scenic rivers and Maya temples. Belize is home to the world's only jaguar preserve, and the prehistoric tapir, the howler monkey and gentle manatee co-exist in protected environments. Belize City has the only manual swing bridge in the world and is still being swung daily. The oldest Anglican Cathedral Church in Central America, St. John's Cathedral, was built in 1812 from bricks brought as ballast from European sailing ships. Over the years, Government House (now a Museum) was used as an administrative office and living quarters for the governors of Belize. This was built in the early 1800 with a combination of Caribbean Vernacular and English Urban architecture. The Lighthouse monument at Fort George Point towers over the harbour entrance. This was built from money donated to the country by Belize's greatest benefactor - Baron Bliss, the 5th baron of Portugal. At his request, he was entombed in front of the lighthouse which he designed himself prior to his death.
