One of the most underrated world cuisines, it's a country where northern Germanic culture melds with Southern French culture, both of which are evident in its cuisine. Ancient Times and Influences The region which now constitutes Belgium has been invaded and ruled by many people over the centuries including Celts, Romans in 56 BC who ruled for four centuries, Franks in 455 AD at which time the demarcation between the Flemish and Walloons was established, Vikings in 830 AD, Spanish, Austrians and French in turn and the cuisine of Belgium is a true reflection of its history.

Belgium is one of the founding members of the European Community, and its capital, Brussels, is also the capital of the European Union . It is a federal state , with 3 relatively autonomous regions: Flanders in the north, where the language is Dutch ("Flemish"), Wallonia in the south, where the language is French, and the centrally located Brussels , which is officially bilingual. Belgium's rich history has left impressive churches, town halls, castles and works of art, dating back to the early Middle Ages, spread around the cities and country-side. Belgium has possibly the highest "quality of life" in the world, as testified by its excellent food , housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty, and the appreciation of foreigners residing in Belgium. Belgium derives its name from a Celtic tribe, the Belgae, whom Caesar described as the most courageous tribe of Gaul. However, the Belgae were forced to yield to Roman legions during the first century B.C. For some 300 years thereafter, what is now Belgium flourished as a province of Rome. But Rome's power gradually lessened. In about A.D. 300, Attila the Hun invaded what is now Germany and pushed Germanic tribes into northern Belgium. About 100 years later, the Germanic tribe of the Franks invaded and took possession of Belgium. The northern part of present-day Belgium became an overwhelmingly Germanized and Germanic-Frankish-speaking area, whereas in the southern part people continued to be Roman and spoke derivatives of Latin. After coming under the rule of the Dukes of Burgundy and, through marriage, passing into the possession of the Hapsburgs, Belgium was occupied by the Spanish (1519-1713) and the Austrians (1713-1794). Under these various rulers, and especially during the 500 years from the 12th to the 17th century, the great cities of Ghent, Bruges, Brussels, and Antwerp took turns at being major European centers for commerce, industry (especially textiles) and art. Flemish paintingfrom Van Eyck and Breugel to Rubens and Van Dyckbecame the most prized in Europe. Flemish tapestries hung on castle walls throughout Europe.

http://www.gamber.net/cyclebel/history.htm
History and Geography Until the invention of the steam railroad in the 1830's, water was by far the most efficient and fastest means for moving goods (and in most cases people). It is still the cheapest way to move goods. Humanity long ago began improving on the nature's waterways - the earliest known navigation canal was dug in Egypt 6,000 years ago. The first recorded Roman canal was dug in 103 BC, and they may have built some in the Netherlands. Until then, canals were either built between bodies of water with about the same level, or had weirs (low dams) to control the water in various sections. Boats were moved between sections on ramps. Then the flash lock was developed, apparently in the Netherlands in 1065. It had a single gate that was opened briefly to let boats going downstream to float through. The first lock as we now know it, with double gates, was built in 1396 at Sluis as part of an early project to maintain Brugge as a port as the Zwin silted up. (The town was named after the lock - from "sluiten" - to close - rather than the reverse.) At the time, Sluis was on an inlet from the North Sea. (Other first locks are reported at Spaarndam, Netherlands, in 1285 and near Padua in 1481. Some Belgian sources consider the Willebroek canal (opened 1561) to have had the first modern gated lock.) In the 16th century, canal building began in earnest. One major factor for the new activity was the closure of the Schelde downstream from Antwerp during the religious wars and after Netherlands independence. Ways had to be developed to move goods in and out of the Spanish Netherlands without going through the independent United Provinces. And growing population created pressure to make new land by draining polders - for which canals were also necessary. Major early projects were the Willebroek-Brussels canal, the Brugge-Oostende canal (replacing the Zwin, which was silting up in any case), a coastal canal to Berques in France, and a new canal between Gent and Brugge.

Eskrima Kali Arnis History
Arnis, the only known traditional Philippino Martial Arts, has its roots deep in the culture and history of the Philippino people. The exact date of its origin, however, remains unclear. Traces of historical evidence reveal that this manly art of self defense no doubt existed long before the arrival of the first Spanish colonizers in the country. Lapulapu The first known Philippino hero, Lapulapu, was believed to be one of the foremost masters of arnis, which was known during that time in the native dialect as pangamut. In fact, Lapulapu had vigorously trained and prepaired his men for "Showdown" fights against his enemies long before his historic battle with Ferdinand Magellan on April 27, 1521, in Mactan Island.
It was no surprise then, that when the first circumnavigator of the world tried to subdue the recalcitrant Lapulapu, who refused to come and meet him in Cebu, Magellan and his men were met not with a hail of bullets but with wooden instruments, spears, and bolos. It was ironic that when the smoke of that epic battle cleared, the Spanish conquistadors more "modern" weapons were no match for the crude wooden arms of Lapulapu and his warriors. Magellan lost his life in that battle.

http://www.electionworld.org/history/belgium.htm
Since 600 BC present-day Belgium is inhabited by Celtic tribes, like the Belgae. Between 57 and 51 BC the Belgae are defeated by the Roman Empire . The area becomes the Roman province of Belgica and is romanized. Around 256 the Germanic tribe of the Franks enter Belgica and since 296 they rule the area as defender of the border of the Roman Empire. This culminates in the forming of the Frankish Realm . The northern part of present-day becomes a Germanic speaking area, whereas the south remains a Romanic speaking area. The Frankish Realm becomes an independent state, but in 639 the country is divided in Austrasia and Neustria. Both kingdoms are reunited in 719. At a new division of the Frankish Empire in 843, Belgium becomes mainly part of the Middle Frankish Empire. In 925 the area is annexed to the Eastern Frankish Empire , later continued by the German Empire. Only the western part becomes part of the Western Frankish Kingdom , later continued by the France. In the feudal German Empire and France the duchies and counties, together known as the Netherlands , come between 1384 and 1451 under the rule of Burgundy, continued by Habsburgians since 1506. The bishop-principality of Liege remains separate.

Belgium's Antarctic History
More than hundred years ago Adrien de Gerlache sailed with the Belgica to Antarctica. Since then, the Antarctic has attracted Belgians irresistibly. The small country was very active on the last continent until the sixties, however in the last decades Belgium seemed to have lost its interest in Antarctica.
Recent adventures of Dixie Dansercoer and Alain Hubert have tried to show that Belgium hasn't forgotten the South Pole yet, nor have the countries scientists, who visit the ice desert regularly. This chapter gives you a short overview of the Belgian presence and involvement in Antarctica. Useful Tools

- Kick the ball through the goals to score.
- If someone grabs you you have to get rid of the ball,
- No offside and other dodgy rules, no padding, alternate offensive/defensive teams etc. Just a ball and a few posts at each end.
oh and the other rule is that if you happen to be within an inch of the goals you must try and kick the ball out of the stadium to keep the crowd happy ;) Posted by: Nathan Lee at December 9, 2004 11:12 AM Hello folks nice blog youre running Posted by: lolita at January 20, 2005 11:56 AM

A Quick History of Belgium, Brussels, and Bruges
A Quick History of Belgium, Brussels, and Bruges Around 57 BC Rome extended its empire into the area now known as Belgium; it was inhabited by a Celtic tribe calling themselves the Belgae. Julius Caesar named the region Gallia Belgica, and Rome held power here until the fourth century AD, when the Franks took control. Word was that the Franks (a Germanic tribe) were actually Roman mercenaries, who were paid off with a reward of this area, which was called Gaul by then. The Franks established their own dynasty, the Merovingian, and made its capitol in Tournai. By the year 500 AD the Romans had been completely eliminated from the area, which included Belgium, as well as large areas of France and Germany. The emperor Clovis adopted Christianity, and gained the support of the Church. (There are some fascinating footnotes to this historical period to be found in Dan Brown’s excellent novel “The Da Vinci Code”). Belgium became a constitutional monarchy in 1830. Yet Belgium is small (around the size of the US state of Maryland) with a population of around 10 million. Belgium has kept its old-world charm by preserving its history and architecture, and for such a small country it holds an important place in modern Europe.

The History of East Belgium
(Text by Leonhard Schifflers) After Centuries of being bounced around, almost the entire population of the 9 German-speaking communes in the east of the country finally feels at home in Belgium, not as Flemings, not as Walloons, but as German-speaking Belgians.
This is the result of the structural changes brought about during a period of three decades, starting in the sixties, by means of which it was hoped that the "Belgian problem" could once and for all be resolved.
This "Belgian problem" is an old one, residing in the coexistence of two Communities, the French-speaking and the Dutch-speaking, within the same national territory. It was hoped at first that the "language quarrels" could be resolved by means of language legislation. A series of language laws came into existence in the sixties which laid the basis for modern Belgium:
the abolishing of the linguistic headcount (1961), the establishing of linguistic frontiers (1962), the regulation of language use in administrative matters (1963) and the regulation of language use in education (1963).
