Do you want to know more about the creation of KPMG? KPMG was formed in 1987 with the merger of Peat Marwick International (PMI) and Klynveld Main Goerdeler (KMG) and their individual member firms. Spanning three centuries, the organization's history can be traced through the names of its principal founding members whose initials form the name "KPMG".
  • K P M G is for Goerdeler. Dr. Reinhard Goerdeler was for many years chairman of Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft and later chairman of KPMG. He is credited with laying much of the groundwork for the KMG merger.

  • In 1979, Klynveld joined forces with Deutsche Treuhand-Gesellschaft and the international professional services firm McLintock Main Lafrentz to form Klynveld Main Goerdeler (KMG).
In 1987, PMI and KMG and their member firms joined forces. Today, all member firms throughout the world carry the KPMG name exclusively or include it in their national firm names.
… that brings us to KPMG Today!
After completing what was the accounting profession's first mega-merger, KPMG has taken a number of innovative steps to transform the professional services industry.
  • Eight years ago, it was the first multidisciplinary organization to establish itself along industry-specific lines of business. This enabled KPMG member firms to tailor services and strategies to the individual needs of clients across a range of global industry markets.

(click on picture) experts on the good Belgian life The origin of lace is difficult to locate in both time and place . Some authors assume that the manufacturing of lace started during Ancient Rome, based on the discovery of small bone cylinders in the shape of bobbins. The Middle-Ages is a period of history where little is known about the manufacture of lace. For firm evidence we have to look back to the fifteenth century when Charles the Fifth decreed that lace making was to be taught in the schools and convents of the Belgian provinces. During this period of renaissance and enlightenment, the making of lace was firmly based within the domain of fashion. To be precise, it was designed to replace embroidery in a manner that could with ease transform dresses to follow different styles of fashion. Unlike embroidery, lace could be unsewn from one material to be replaced on another. Since these earlier times, many styles and techniques of lacemaking have been developed, almost all of them in the Belgian provinces, which thus deserve to be named the cradle of lace. Today, two main techniques are practiced in the Flemish provinces of Belgium. The first, a needle lace, is still manufactured in in the region of Aalst. It is called Renaissance or Brussels lace because it is mostly sold in Brussels. The second type, the Bobbin Lace, is a speciality of Bruges, a magnificent city located in the west of Belgium. This is a very expensive type of lace to make and is therefore no longer manufactured for commercial purposes.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Kortrijk - History The Kortrijk district - in common with the rest of Flanders - has a rich and varied history, characterized by the continual presence of various cultures and peoples. According to archaeological discoveries, people were already living around 1500 B.C. where Kortrijk stands today. But there was no real colony before Roman times.
First century A.D. : the Gallo-Roman colony called Caroticum came to the light. It was settled on the borders of the Lys river and was situated on the crossroads of Tongeren-Kassel and Tournai-Oudenburg. Caroticum is a Latin form of an old Celtic name.
In Roman times Kortrijk saw its first trade activity at the junction of two Roman roads. In the 5th century the Romans made way for the Frankish, who converted to Christianism. Between the 9th and the 18th centuries, Kortrijk was part of the County of Flanders. This county was continuously endangered by the great European powers. As a result, Flanders was annexed to the Burgundian, Habsburgian and Spanish empires respectively. The Battle of the Spurs in1302, was the most famous battle in the Flemish medieval history. The 15th century marked the beginning of the textile industry, when artisans laid the groundwork for damask, tapestry and sheet weaving.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Leuven - History Leuven is very proud of both its past and its heritage, and rightly so. There is so much to see and to do in and around Leuven, that one visit simply is not enough. Although the first references to the town can be traced back as far as the 9th century and in spite of its strategic location on the river Dyle, it was not until around the 11th-12th century that Leuven began to develop as an important trading centre within the Duchy of Brabant. It was at this time that its first town wall, churches, monasteries and abbeys were built. The town's once flourishing cloth trade had fallen into decline by the 14th century, but a new golden age dawned with the 15th century. The university was founded, various industrial concerns flourished and the main market square with its fine Gothic town hall was laid out. Its finely sculpted Town Hall and Saint Peter's church with its magnificent interior which is hung with the famous 'Last Supper' by Thierry Bouts, are fine examples of flamboyant Gothic architecture at its best. Dating from the same period are the Cloth Hall, 't Sestich House and many churches, including St Gertrude's with its magnificent choir stalls. Other architectural styles are not quite so much in evidence, but they can still be found. The Romanesque Gate, the Saint Lambert's church and the remains of the first town walls are still clearly in evidence.

    Belgium History and Culture
History Belgium's neighbours France, Germany and England. Conquered by German tribes, Christianised by the 7th century and carved up during the Frankish Empire in 1100, much of Belgium enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and artistry under the French Duke of Burgundy during the 14th century. With the demise of Bruges due to British competition and a silted river, Antwerp soon became the greatest port in Europe. The golden age began to tarnish in the mid-15th century when the Low Countries (present-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) were inherited by Spain, igniting a long battle against Catholic Spanish rule. The fanatically Catholic Philip II of Spain sent in the Inquisition to enforce Catholicism.

A History of the English Church in Antwerp
The following text is taken - verbatim - from a booklet ("A History of the English Church in Antwerpen") written by the late Mrs Sarah Baines in 1962. It is included here to provide her account of the history of our church with a wider audience. Unfortunately, the notes from her research are no longer available so it is not possible to verify the sources of her text.
This is the third part of her booklet, which deals with the history of the church from the opening of the present building in 1910. The sub-headings have been added to make navigation easier. In time, further notes will be added on seperate pages as information becomes available.

    THE THIRD PERIOD
The third period of the Anglican Church in Antwerp may be considered to have commenced in 1910 when its members gave back to the authorities the church in the Rue des Tanneurs so kindly lent them in 1820. The new church in the Rue Grétry was appropriately dedicated to an Englishman, Winfrith of Crediton, known to history as St. Boniface, Missionary Bishop and one of the most important figures in 8th century Europe. The Consecration of this Church was thus described by one who was present at the service:
The Consecration of the new building
On the next day the first baptism took place and the baby was christened John Bernard Boniface. The first wedding took place on the following Wednesday and the Church Committee presented the bride with a handsomely bound Bible in accordance with the old English custom that the first bride married in a newly consecrated church should be presented with a Family Bible.
