On this page: Wikipedia Mentioned In Or search: - The Web - Images - News - Blogs - Shopping Culture of Belgium Wikipedia Culture of Belgium A discussion of Belgian culture requires discussing both those aspects of cultural life shared by 'all' or most of the Belgians , regardless of what language they speak, and also, the differences between the main cultural communities, the Flemings and the French-speakers from Brussels and Wallonia Most Belgians tend to view their culture as an integral part of European culture ; nevertheless, both main communities tend to make their thousands of individual and collective cultural choices mainly from within their own community, and then, when going beyond, Flemings draw intensively from both the Anglo-Saxon culture (which dominates sciences, professional life and most news media) and French and other Latin cultures, whereas French-speakers focus on cultural life in Paris and elsewhere in the French-speaking world ( la Francit© ), and less outside. A truly scientific discussion would also include discussion of the different cultures of Belgian ethnic minorities such as the Jews who have formed a remarkable component of Flemish culture - in particular that of Antwerp for over five hundred years.

By the end of 2003, more than 619 000 (32.7%) of the total 1 893 000 Belgian subscribers to Internet used the PSTN ("Public Switched Telephone Network"). As a comparison, this means that compared to the end of 2002 the number of Internet lines had increased by 11.7% whilst connections by switched network had fallen by 24.7%. High speed access is highly developed in Belgium representing 67% of access to Internet. Its penetration rate puts Belgium in 3rd position worldwide (29% of households) behind Korea and Canada. Two technologies are used: ADSL, the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line technology (18% of households) and cable TV (11% of households). The Belgian ADSL network boasts the best European coverage, reaching 98% of the population. Cable, as a television support, and thus, media support run by the Flemish and Walloon municipalities, has undergone Belgian market fragmentation. Whilst cable is very common in the Flemish part, in the Walloon sector much progress is still required.

Belgium: Overview
Clickable Map: Belgium with major cities; thick black lines denote the language border separating the 3 regions: Brussels in the center, Flanders in the Northern half, Wallonia in the Southern half; thin lines delimit provinces Belgium is a small, highly developed and densely populated country (10 million of inhabitants) at the cross-roads of Western Europe. Belgium is one of the founding members of the European Community, and its capital, Brussels, is also the capital of the European Union . It is a federal state , with 3 relatively autonomous regions: Flanders in the north, where the language is Dutch ("Flemish"), Wallonia in the south, where the language is French, and the centrally located Brussels , which is officially bilingual. Belgium's rich history has left impressive churches, town halls, castles and works of art, dating back to the early Middle Ages, spread around the cities and country-side. Belgium has possibly the highest "quality of life" in the world, as testified by its excellent food , housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty, and the appreciation of foreigners residing in Belgium. Belgium: society, character and culture
An essay on the Belgian identity
Situation of the country
The "peaceful anarchism" of Brussels architecture may well be the feature that best characterizes Belgium as a whole. During its history of over 2000 years, the region has almost continuously been occupied by foreign powers: from the Romans to the Spanish, the Austrians, the French, the Dutch and the Germans. This has made the Belgians critical of any form of authority, and laws, rules and regulations are not taken very seriously (tax evasion is one of the national sports). This individualistic, anti-authoritarian attitude is perhaps best exemplified by the famous literary figure of Thyl Uilenspiegel, who mocked the Spanish authorities during the 16th century occupation. The governing of the country is very much complicated by the particular structure with three language communities Flanders in the North, Wallonia in the South, and a tiny German speaking region in the East ), and the multilingual, multicultural and multinational status of Brussels. The language in Wallonia is French (although there still exists a not officially recognized " Walloon language "). The language in Flanders is Flemish, which is officially the same language as the Dutch which is spoken in Holland. In practice, the differences between Flemish and Dutch (mostly pronunciation, also vocabulary and expressions) are comparable to the differences between British and American English, and are just big enough so that Dutch TV sometimes add subtitles to Flemish spoken movies. Although Brussels is surrounded by Flemish territory, the majority there speaks French. Flanders comprises about 55% of the 10 million of Belgian inhabitants, Brussels 10 % and Wallonia the remaining 35%.

Belgium is rich in art and culture. Its history books read like an encyclopedia of famous names: Van Eyck, Brueghel, Rubens, van Dyck, Magritte and Delvaux. Every town has its galleries and museums, its share of medieval splendour and 20th century architecture Festivals and folklore abound. The people are open and friendly, the food and drink a gourmet's delight. Come along and discover through words and pictures what makes the Belgians tick and what differentiates Belgium from its European neighbours. A Bourgeois Paradise?
Supremely boring and bourgeois - or subversive, surreal and salacious? The everyday life of the Belgians confounds the cliches. Where else will you find a Mercedes showroom in someone's living room? The Cultural Scene
Belgian cultural celebrities do not trip off the tongue: they wait to trip you up, to trick and amuse you. Tintin, Magritte, and Jaques Brel make bizarre wayward traveling companions as do Inspector Maigret, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Toots Thielemans. These are not so much icons as quirky traveling companions who know their cultural limitations. Food and Drink
Belgian fare is a successful blend of the lavish, wholesome and traditional dishes favoured by the Flemish and Brabant merchants and the sophistication of French cuisine. Brussels boasts more than 1,800 restaurants and it is difficult to find a bad one among them.
