82. History Of 19th Century Belarus
The experiences of Belorus and the Belarussians in the 19th century led to the development of their national consciousness.
http://tntn.essortment.com/historybelarus_rnql.htm
History of 19th century belarus
The experiences of Belorus and the Belarussians in the 19th century led to the development of their national consciousness.
Belorussians have been ruled by many nations. For the five hundred years before the 19th century Belarus had been controlled by the Polish state. Through the partitions of Poland in the late 18th century, Russia took control of the area. A new culture, a new language, and a new government were imposed upon the Belorussians. Was the coming of the Russians to the lands today known as Belarus an invasion of Polish lands, a retaking of Russian lands, or simply the transfer of rule over the Belorussians? Today Belarus is a separate state, but the question still remains, who are the Belorussians, and who should have a claim to their land? If the Belorussians are simply Polonized Russians as some claim, then possibly they should reunite with Russia. If they are Russified Poles, then they could reunite with Poland. However, if they are distinct as Belorussians they should maintain their sovereignty. During the 18th century the lands of Poland were partitioned three times, culminating in the disappearance of the Polish empire. The Russians occupied the eastern portion, including the area today known as Belarus. Catherine II, the tsarina of Russia, felt that she was returning lands that Poland had taken from the Russian empire centuries earlier. However, she found that more than a military occupation was needed to make Belarus a part of the Russian empire. She found that the Belorussians not only practiced a different religion and spoke a different language, but also had a different historical memory. Over the course of the 19th century Russia tried to alter these differences and make the Belorussians into Russians.

    Polatsk, Belarus
Polatsk (Belarusian: ; Polish: Połock , also spelt as Polacak ; Russian: , also transliterated as Polotsk, Polotzk, Polock ) is the most historic city in Belarus, situated on the Dvina river. It is the center of Polatsk district in Vitsebsk voblast. The population is approximately 79,000 residents.
    Contents
    History
The Old East Slavic name, Polotesk , is derived from the Polota river, that flows into Dvina nearby. The Vikings rendered that name as Palteskja , or Paltejsborg. Polatsk is one of the most ancient cities of the Eastern Slavs. It was mentioned for the first time by the Primary Chronicle in 862, together with Murom and Beloozero. The Norse sagas describe the city as the most heavily fortified in all of Rus. Between the 10th and 12th centuries, the principality of Polatsk emerged as the dominant center of power in what is now Belarusian territory, with a lesser role played by the principality of Turaw to the south. It repeatedly asserted its sovereignty in relation to other centers of Kievan Rus, becoming a political capital, the episcopal see and the controller of vassal territories among Balts in the west. Its most powerful ruler was prince Vseslav Bryachislavich (reigned from 1044 to 1101).

    Background
The Republic of Belarus is a country that has seldom in its history been politically independent. Nonetheless, it is ethnically and culturally distinct as a nation with a rich and long history. There is a distinct language and culture that has survived the centuries. However, because of past military and political domination of Belarus by its neighbors, such influences on its culture have been quite detrimental to the identification of the population with a national character. But happily, there is currently a Belarus national revival that also includes members of the Belarus diaspora.
    • The best starting point for a general, multimedia introduction to Belarus is the following site maintained by Alex Artsyukhovich and others: The Virtual Guide to Belarus

Note: A lot of the following information is presented from the point of view of an English speaker in the US, primarily due to the linguistic limitations of the person collecting this material. Much of the material has a US or Canadian perspective. I hope we can minimize these shortcomings with time, and include information about all of the Belarusian organizations both inside and outside of the Republic of Belarus. In addition, I hope that we will have a Belarusian language equivalent of this information as well in the not-so-distant future.

While archeological evidence points to settlement in today's Belarus at least 10,000 years ago, recorded history begins with settlement by Baltic and Slavic tribes in the early centuries A.D. With distinctive features by the ninth century, the emerging Belarusian state was then absorbed by Kievan Rus' in the 9th century. Belarus was later an integral part of what was called Litva, which included today's Belarus as well as today's Lithuania. Belarus was the birthplace of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (Belarusian was the state language of the Grand Duchy until 1697, in part owing to the strong flowering of Belarusian culture during the Renaissance through the works of leading Belarusian humanists such as Frantzisk Skaryna). Belarus was the site of the Union of Brest in 1597, which created the Greek Catholic Church, for long the majority church in Belarus until suppressed by the Russian empire, and the birthplace of Thaddeus Kosciuszko, who played a key role in the American Revolution. Occupied by the Russian empire from the end of the 18th century until 1918, Belarus declared its short-lived National Republic on March 25, 1918, only to be forcibly absorbed by the Bolsheviks into what became the Soviet Union. Suffering massive population losses under Stalin and the Nazi occupation, Belarus was retaken by the Soviets in 1944. It declared its sovereignty on July 27, 1990, and independence from the Soviet Union on August 25, 1991. It has been run by the authoritarian Alexander Lukashenko since 1994.

Welcome to the first web page about Vitebsk (Belarus)
Vitebsk (Viciebs or Witebsk) is a Belarussian city situated on the North-East of the Belarus in the land of glacier lakes on the picturesque banks of the three rivers: the Zakhodnyaya Dzvina (in Russian - Zapadnaya Dvina, in old Belarusian -Rubon, in Latvian - Daugava) river, the Vitba and the Luchesa river . It is one of the oldest settlements in Europe. According to a legend Vitebsk was founded in 974 by Princess Olga of Kiev after successful campaign against the Baltic tribe Jacviahi . But the first information about the town in chronicles was in 1021. It had sprung up on a busy road "from Varangians to Greeks" and stood witness to a great number of glorious events and heroic deeds. Since early times the town had been known as a " warrior ". So it is not by chance that its ancient emblem featured a horseman holding a spear and shield.
