ADVERTISING INFORMATION Minsk History There are many legends relating to the foundation of Minsk and the origin of its name. Situated on the watershed of the river-routes linking the Baltic to the Black sea, its trading history going back to prehistoric times some have thought that the city owes its name to the word miena or "barter". Others look at a hill-fort known as Haradysczy During the era of Viking expansion along the East European waterways, many towns and principalities were ruled over by Scandinavian warlords; in the 9th century the lands of Polacak were raided by two Viking princes Askold and Dir, and by the 10th century a Prince Ravhalod( Norse : Ragnvald) reigned over the Belarusian principality of which early Minsk formed part. The Belarusian nobility to this day distinguishes between families of old Lithuanian and those of Scandinavian descent ( Hedymoviczy and Rurikoviczy CHERNOBYL:

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Gomel History Founded by a Radimichi tribe many centuries ago, the settlement that would later bear the name Gomel appeared on the right bank of the river Sozh. Abounding in water, the winding river surrounded the settlement from three sides. In the nearby areas, primeval forests, full of deep lakes and boggy swamps, spread for hundreds of kilometres. Countless flocks of birds and a great variety of wild animals inhabited the dense woods. Among them were boars, elks, goats, deer, bears, wolves, lynxes, foxes, and badgers. Lakes and rivers, adorned with reed, were home to an abundant variety of fish, wild geese, ducks, and swans. On the banks, beavers hustled restlessly around the fallen trees... According to ancient chronicles, this is how Gomel and its surroundings appeared several centuries ago. Although the exact date of Gomel's founding and the precise origin of the city's name have not been identified, Gomel was first mentioned in the chronicles around the first half of 12th century. As such, Gomel is one of the oldest towns in modern day Belarus. In accordance with recent research that suggests that Gomel was in fact founded in 1142, the city celebrated its 855th anniversary in 1997 with various festivities and special commemorative events. After being accepted by Kievan Rus' in 988 under Prince Vladimir, Christianity gradually penetrated into the lands of Radimichi as well. Prior to this, Radimichi held pagan beliefs. They prayed and made sacrifices to wooden and stone idols, trees, and birds, which they believed had godly qualities. They also deified such natural forces and occurrences as sun, wind, and thunder. Perun, the god of thunder and lightning, was their main god. To this day Gomel and the surrounding areas carry signs of these old pagan beliefs in the names of different locations and villages. In this manner, a small island near the village Kuzminichi is called Perunovskiy. Similarly, the village Volosovichi is believed to have received its name from the name of a pagan god Volos, patron of cattle.

Belarus - HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The population of the Belorussian SSR was jolted into national awareness in the late 1980s with the occurrence of one disaster and the discovery of another. The explosion at the Chornobyl' (Chernobyl') nuclear power plant in Ukraine not only entailed the physically damaging radiation carried by the winds but also came to represent the toll taken on the country's sense of its ethnic and cultural identity by years of Russification. These two sets of consequences affected both the daily lives of the Belarusians and national politics: how was the country to remedy the two kinds of damage? Belarus's other disaster was the discovery in 1988 of mass graves containing victims of Joseph V. Stalin's atrocities. Although the revelation of these graves angered a broad spectrum of Belarusians, it actually energized only a relatively small group of activists to try to overcome the country's political apathy. Nationalists saw Stalin's actions as clear proof of Moscow's attempts to eliminate the Belorussian nation and wanted to make sure that such barbarity could not occur again. For them, a strong, independent Belarus was the first step in this direction.
Belarus - Early History
Belarus's origins can be traced from the emergence in the late ninth century A.D. of Kievan Rus', the first East Slavic state. After the death of its ruler, Prince Yaroslav the Wise, in 1054, Kievan Rus' split into a number of principalities, each centered on a city. One, Polatsk (Polotsk, in Russian), became the nucleus of modern-day Belarus.

After seven decades as a constituent republic of the USSR, Belarus attained its independence in 1991.
It has retained closer political and economic ties to Russia than any of the other former Soviet republics.

World Scouting News, March, 1998, reports The Belarusian National Scout Association became the 149th member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement. Membership became effective on March 13, 1998. Belarus is the former Soviet Socialist Republic of Belorussia which was part of the USSR before its collapse. In december 1991, Belarus became a founder member of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). The capital city is Minsk. The Belarusian National Scout Association includes more than 7,500 members, both boys and girls, in 3 branches ranging from 8 to 17 years of age. They are spread all over the country but the majority of members come from the major cities. The first Belarusian Scout groups were created in 1909, just after the founding of Scouting in the England in 1907. Scouting's development stopped during the Soviet control. Scouting was reborn and reorganized in 1989. In december 1991, a National co-ordinating Committee was set up under the aegis of WOSM in order to promote the unification of the various Scout Associations which appeared in different parts of the country. Scouting grew steadily with support from the Christian Orthodox and Catholic Churches, aswell as the Youth Commission of the Parliament. In March 1997, as a result of a long process of reconciling divergent nationalistic trends in Scouting, a constituent assembly was held in Minsk. This assembly approved the creation of a united National Scout Association under the name, "BELARUSKAYA NATSIANALNAYA SKAUTSKAYA ASATSIYATSIA".

Belarusian history links a dismal present to a more encouraging past
Belarus's election. Archive 13.09.2001. From The Economist print edition There are few better antidotes to despair in Eastern Europe than an old town soaked with good ideas from long ago. Even in the darkest years of communist rule, Czechs, Poles, Balts and others could take comfort from the visible signs of happier days. That is much harder for the 10m people of Belarus, who face five more years of stagnation and autocracy under their newly re-elected president, Alexander Lukashenka. On September 9th he claimed an implausible 76% of the vote in a presidential election that western observers say fell well short of international standards of fairness. Compared with its western neighbours, Belarus often seems a featureless country, both aesthetically and in national character. What two world wars did not destroy was mostly rounded off by Soviet planners and russifiers. Belarus managed barely nine months of independent statehood in 1918-too short to sustain the patriotic zing that helped other East Europeans to shake off Communist rule. History helps answer two depressing questions. First, why do so many Belarusians-perhaps more than half of them-genuinely think that an autocratic regime based on a bullying personality cult is so fine? After all, even allowing for the election's unfairness, a lot of Belarusians plainly do like Mr. Lukashenka. Second, why are the disgruntled rest, who broadly oppose his style of rule, unable to do anything about it? Even in a fair election Uladzimir Hancharyk, the main opposition candidate, who was officially credited with 15% of the vote, would probably have fared less than brilliantly. Opposition demonstrations against the election-rigging have already fizzled out.

    HISTORY
Sometimes it is hard to imagine, that there is great multitude of people around the Earth united by one great Person. This Man was looking just like all of us, yet He performed inconceivable miracles. Of course, everybody heard of Him. Jesus proved indeed that He is the Christ, He is the one and only real Lord. And those who believed in Christ as in the Savior are the part of the great God's family. In this family all of us - orthodox, catholic, protestant christians - are brothers and sisters. God calls his children everybody who believes in Jesus Christ and trusts in Him (I John 5:1). "One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Eph.4:6)
    History of the church:
    Pastor recollects
In 1991 in Minsk several believers started to come together. It was the beginning of the ministry of the Church of Jesus Christ in Minsk, Full-Gospel church. God chose Benjamin and Nelli Brukh to do this work to build this local church in Minsk. From the story of Benjamin and Nelli: In January 1991 we were called by God to study in the Bible School "Christ to the World" that was in the Latvian city Jelgava. This school was headed by Steve Bradkovich, man of amazing faith who committed his life to minister to God and to people. Our teachers filled with love and compassion had great vision - to create thousands of churches across the Soviet Union and to help people. They were able to transfer this vision into us, their students.
