[edit this] [Change image] [Upload image] The very word Belarus should inspire visions of beauty and kindness, if it does not, then most likely you have not been there. Belarus has retained its mystery, it has remained virtually closed and unexplored since the fall of Communism. Belarus is little known, little understood, and even less traveled. It is one of the few countries in the former Soviet Union where Lenin still stands and the Soviet symbol, the sickle and hammer, can be found in abundance. It is the only country that still uses the KGB. Powerful forces in Belarus are guiding it forward and forcing it backward at the same time. Despite, or perhaps because of, this, Belarus has become an intriguing place to travel. Belarus is filled with beautiful forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife. In many places the history seems alive, and can almost be felt. Reminders of war, suffering, oppression and survival can be seen throughout the country. Churches, fortresses, and many other aspects of Belarusian culture have kept their traditional feel. Traditional crafts, dances, and opera have survived Soviet Imperialism and give travelers a sense of the inspiring culture that is native to Belarus. Its capital Minsk is worth a visit and has quite a lot to offer compared to cities such as

Reuters A CONFUSED NATION DECIDES ITS FUTURE By Lena Craig Filed: Friday, 17 Nov 2000 22:36:15 +0200 Minsk, Autonomous Republic of Belarus Driving into Minsk from the Polish city of Bialystok on European Highway 498, the first thing that you notice is the forest. Bialystok and most of the rest of northeastern Poland is the Kresy , the poor hinterland of one of the leading states of the European Confederation The Second World War brought about the genocide of the Jews who once made up two-thirds of Bialystok's population; the Third World War made Bialystok's old trade with Russia collapse irretrievably. The average family income in Bialystok is only 65% of the Polish national average, and is 55% of the average of the pre-1985 member-states of the European Confederation. Each year for the past decade, Bialystok and its hinterland has been designated by the Polish government as a special development zone. And yet, as you drive across the Belarusian frontier, you're reminded that Bialystok is positively bustling next to Belarus. There are more than a million people living in Bialystok province; in Belarus' province of Hrodna, a territory about twice the size, there are only 110 thousand people. As you drive down the well-maintained highway, everywhere that you look you see the great deciduous forest that covers almost two-thirds of the land area of Belarus. Part of the forest stems back thousands of years to the last Ice Age; the Bialowieza Forest, on the Polish-Belarusian frontier, was an international nature park even in the Soviet era. Most of it, though, was planted after Belarus joined the Confederation as a Russian autonomous republic, in order to try to restore something approaching a natural ecology on this long-suffering land. Even as you drive into Minsk, the capital of Belarus and home to more than half of Belarus' population of 550 thousand people, you're reminded that this city is an empty city.

Religion
Many Belarusians follow the Eastern Orthodox religion, though there are large enclaves of Roman Catholics, particularly in the Hrodna region of western Belarus. Smaller groups adhere to the Eastern (Uniate) Catholic, Jewish, Protestant, and Muslim faiths, among others. The government has adopted the Eastern Orthodox faith as the official state religion. Church services are well attended, particularly Easter services, for which there are three separate holidays. C
Education
Education is free and compulsory for children between the ages of 6 and 14. Higher education institutions include three universities, the largest of which is the Belarusian State University (founded in 1921) in Minsk. There also are a number of specialized academies and institutes for studies in technical arts, agriculture, medicine, economics, and other fields. The literacy rate is 100 percent.

Spring Day in Belarus Vladimir Kalinin is always open for cooperation with colleagues with whom to share experiences and best practices of teaching human rights to children. As an educator, he has implemented many projects on human rights promotion in primary and secondary schools, including roundtable discussions for teachers, head masters, social workers, and local officials; student drawing and essay competitions; school newspapers on human rights; a volunteer service for monitoring children's rights violations within schools; and a "Children Forum". Vladimir says about himself: I am the head of an information center on children's rights education, and I am responsible for teaching and promoting human rights and esp. children's rights within the curriculum of our primary and secondary schools. I am teaching classes on children's rights in Gymnasium N4, and my office is situated in the Gymnasium. The Ministry of Education appointed me as a researcher in the field of children's rights (till the end of 2003) because I graduated from the MAS Programme on Peace Studies and Conflict Management at the Europäische Friedensuniversität in Austria. I learned English by myself, just to communicate and collaborate with my colleagues abroad and disseminate new knowledge and projects among our educational bodies.

Between brotherly Russia and peaceful Europe
Andrej Dynko elaborates on Belarus' specific situation and Belarusian's mentaliy. Why do the Belarusians want to change everything while changing nothing? Dynko offers an explanation through an analysis of Belarus' history and wonders about the country's future. It is more or less clear about Russia and independence. Like the characters of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa's The Leopard , the Belarusians would like to change everything, changing nothing. It is understandable why my compatriots want everything to remain as it is. But why are the Belarusians seeking to join Europe, obtain membership in the European Union? We are currently separated from the European Union by a thousand kilometers of barbed wire with only a dozen of border crossing points. The border is locked from both sides. However, Europe attracts the Belarusians, and something prompts Eurosympathies. What do the population of Belarus and the residents of the Great Europe have in common? What will be the solution of the Belarusian schizophrenia? The center of Europe Edifices built in the late-Soviet period impress by their size and disfunctionality. They differ very much from the yet few projects designed and completed in the post-Soviet times, often built from a "Eurodesign" standard, through the implementation of European design ideas by locally available means. The authors' taste sometimes plays them tricks, but the buildings are distinguished by their functionality and low cost.
