People of Belarus The people of Belarus were greatly influenced by the Soviet rule, the traces of which can be still found among them - like over 90 percent of the population speak only Russian, while the native Belarusian language remains confined to the rural areas alone. The Belarusians can be broadly divided into five ethnic groups- the people of original Belarusian descent, Russians, Poles, Ukrainians and Jews. Known for their strong family ties, the people of Belarus are also great sports lovers and excel in gymnastics and rowing. Other popular sports include Soccer, basketball, and ice hockey. Arts, Culture and Music of Belarus Belarus is famous for its opera and ballet, which always have the audience asking for more. There are theatres like the Opera and Ballet Theater in Minsk, which holds regular and well-attended performances. Belarus is also famous for musical comedy, which is held at the popular Theater of Musical Comedy Minsk. Besides this, their love for music has many orchestra groups performing every now and then. Drama also plays a central role in the culture of Belarus, with the leading drama theater being the Yanka Kupala Beslarusian State Academic Theater, located in Minsk. Other major theaters include the Gorky Russian Theater in Babruysk, and the Yakub Kolas Belarusian State Academic Theater in Minsk. Apart from all this, there is another theater at Minsk known as Vol'naya Stsena, which focuses on Belarusian drama and classics.

Kitabs are books written in Belarusian language using Arabic script . They were written mostly in the 16th century by the Tatars who lived in Belarus, in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, since 14-15th centuries and have gradually forgotten their native language. In order to preserve their religion they had to translate Koran and other sacred Islamic books into Belarusian language, but preserving the Arabic script. Rubriques Belarus' Forum

In the XVIth Century the new stage of development of Belarusian culture, associated with the formation of Belarusian nationality, and expansion of humanistic and enlightenment tendencies started. The development of various kinds of arts, especially architecture, annalistic art and literature became more active. In 1523 the Belarusian poet-humanist Mikola Gusovski (1470-1533) published in Krakov the poem "Song about aurochs", a patriotic piece of art of enormous artistic power, the genuine hymn of Belarusian land. Francisk Skorina, the first Belarusian book-printer, was an outstanding worker of Belarusian and Slav culture, an enlightener, humanist, scientist, writer, thinker, whose creative work had a great impact on the development of Belarusian language, literature, book-printing.
F. Skorina was born in Polotsk, a large center of trade and crafts, and, also, a cultural center of Belarus at that time. No exact data on the date of his birth is known. In the year 1506 Skorina graduated from the Krakov University with a bachelor degree. In the autumn of 1512 Skorina arrived to the world-known Paduan University where he brilliantly passed the examination for the Doctor of Medicine degree.

    Introduction
The Republic of Belarus is one of what is called for convenience the former Soviet republics. This country is relatively new to most of the world, and people in the West as a rule only know what rare comments in modern history textbooks can tell them. These comments are mostly related to the years after the 1917 revolution in Russia. However, the independence of Belarus is not occassional and even not the first in its history. Belarus has its own language, culture, heritage and, of course, history, as does any other country of the world. The reason why Belarus is still generally unknown to the world is that most of its historical facts were hidden or artificially assimilated with Russian and Soviet histories. The current situation in Belarus does not encourage a lot of information about the republic to be disseminated. I myself have learned most of the facts a relatively short time ago, when true historic evidence of Belarus past became available. I hope that these notes will be helpful for all interested people who are eager to find out more about the history of this old and original country.

    Prefatory comments
In response to the many questions put forth to me about Belarus, this essay is an attempt at a reply to those interested folks. I apologize for not having time to answer each query in a personal, specific, and timely manner. This essay is also an attempt at trying to make sense of the post-Soviet era, and to try to summarize the current very difficult times in Belarus. Please remember this essay is only one person's point of view. It is a personal summary from the point of view of someone who feels a close connection with and who is very interested in, Belarus, its history, its people, its culture, and their future, but who is a citizen of a democratic country. Being a citizen of a democratic country who tries to be an informed citizen and voter (an awesome challenge in the '90's), I am aware of imperfections and the problems such a system can have, and the need for the active participation of its citizens if such a system is to remain healthy and thrive. Needless to say, there is much to worry about in any democracy. Of course, these notes are solely my personal opinions. The citizens of the Republic of Belarus must come to their own decisions. But because of over 50 years of isolation and the continuing isolation that results in a lack of information access, lack of transition to civil society and democratic institutions, their ability to make the difficult transition is on indefinite hold. But no country, no people, can continue to live in isolation and still be able to participate in such things as the global economy, the information age, and so forth.

SYSTEM OF MUSICAL EDUCATION IN BELARUS The version for listing Dr. Elena Gorokhovik (Dept. of Music History) On the borderline of the XX and XXI centuries the European community proved to be a witness of a remarkable historical phenomenon: on the territory of the former USSR there emerged a series of independent countries. The Republic of Belarus is one of the above-mentioned states. It is geographically situated at the very center of Europe, has been identified as a state for many centuries, has its own history, including prolific humanistic and enlightenment traditions as well as its own cultural background. The system of musical education in Belarus has a long-lasting historical path closely related with all the complex of musical traditions of this region. Because of its location – situated in-between Europe and Russia – Belarusian musical culture (including musical education as an integral part of it), has been influenced by a wide scope of different cultural elements: beginning with musical teaching in Orthodox monasteries and Jesuit Collegiums through the traditions of court musicianship of famous Belarusian-Polish noble families and up to the present with civil music education in regional cities of the country. The modern history of music education in Belarus gets its start at the very beginning of the XX century, when the first professional music institutions of a new type (public conservatories and music colleges) were founded in Minsk, Mogilyev, Vityebsk, Gomel and Bobruisk. The first public elementary music schools were opened at the same time. In 1932, on the base of a reorganized Minsk Music Technicum, the Belarusian State Conservatory was opened. In 1935, under the auspices of the Conservatory, was arranged a special Department for talented children – a prototype of today’s Republic Gymnasium-College of Music, a true cradle of hundreds of professionals in the realm of music.

    NEWS 22 June 1999
    BREAKING NEWS
    FAMOUS BELARUSIAN POET EMIGRATES
Seeking refuge from persecution by Belarusian authorities When being on private trip to Warsaw, Chairman of the Union of Belarusian Writers Vladimir Neklyaev announced his decision to stay in the West. He said the decision was due to political reasons. Last time the authorities have been extensively hounding the leader of Belarusian writers, especially after the latter published in Narodnaya Volya the article "Antipodes and Ethiopians". In the opinion of Mr Neklyaev, he could soon found himself behind the bars.
In the article Vladimir Neklyaev openly stood up for the Belarusian language, values of the Belarusian culture, and ventured to unmask the mechanism of the authorities' pressure on outstanding cultural leaders. The article revealed the role of First Deputy PM Vladimir Zametalin in this hounding campaign. Mr Neklyaev's numerous efforts to find the ways of co-operation with the authorities faced their rough intrusion in the sphere of culture in order to subordinate the Belarusian culture and make it even more controllable than during the Soviet era. The leader of Belarusian writers faced a hard moral challenge. The authorities viewed him as a "minister of literature", appointed and cherished by them (the poet was awarded a National Prize in Literature) but who had ventured for an open rebellion. Thus they probably decided to put a hard hand to those "putrid intellectuals". The decision taken by Vladimir Neklyaev is symptomatic. On the one hand, it shows the authorities switch from hounding political opposition members, businessmen and their own top executives to repressions against cultural leaders. On the other hand, the rebellion action by the chairman of the Belarusian Writers' Union is an open challenge thrown down by Belarusian intellectuals to the regime. So, the old appeal of a Russian Communist writer "Whose side you are on, masters of culture?" appears to be topical in Belarus.

    I. INTRODUCTION
Belarus, officially Respublika Belarus (Republic of Belarus), landlocked republic in east central Europe, bordered by Russia to the east, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west, and the Baltic republics of Latvia and Lithuania to the northwest. Belarus has a generally flat terrain with many forests, lakes, and marshes. Nearly 80 percent of its people are ethnic Belarusians, and about three-quarters of its population live in urban centers. Belarus has a centrally planned economy dominated by state-controlled heavy industry. Its government is a presidential republic in which the executive is the chief authority. The capital and largest city is Minsk, located in the center of the country.
Since medieval times Belarusian territory was under foreign rule, and in the 18th century it was annexed by the Russian Empire. Belarus was established in 1919 as the Belorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR), which in 1922 became one of the four founding republics of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). In August 1991 Belarus declared its independence, contributing to the collapse of the USSR in December.
