  • Behçet?s disease is common in the Middle East, Asia, and Japan, but rare in the United States. In Middle Eastern and Asian countries, the disease affects more men than women. In the United States, the opposite is true. Behçet?s disease tends to develop in people in their twenties or thirties, but people of all ages can develop it.
What is Behçet?s Disease? The disease was first described in 1937 by Dr. Helusi Behçet, a professor of dermatology in Istanbul. Behçet?s disease is now recognized as a chronic condition that causes sores or ulcers in the mouth and on the genitals, and inflammation in parts of the eye. In some people, the disease also results in arthritis (swollen, painful, stiff joints) and inflammation of the digestive tract, brain, and spinal cord. Most people with Behçet?s disease can lead normal lives and control their symptoms with proper medicine, rest, and exercise. Doctors can use many medicines to relieve pain, treat symptoms, and prevent complications. When treatment is effective, flares usually become less frequent after 1 or 2 years. Many patients eventually enter a period of remission. In some people, however, treatment does not relieve symptoms, and gradually more serious symptoms such as eye disease may occur. Serious symptoms may appear months or years after the first signs of Behçet?s disease.

powered by FreeFind Updated on; Behcet's Disease is a chronic rheumatic illness, initiated through the bodies immune system being over-reactive, and producing unpredictable episodes of inflammation which affect mostly the small blood vessels. Symptoms may occur wherever there is a blood supply. Most can be suppressed by the right and relevant treatment. To date the cause is still unknown. It is not known if the disease is hereditary, but this is suspected (some families do have the disease in different generations). It is not thought to be an infection. As a caring organisation, we want to give you the opportunity to stay up to date with our group and the information we provide. The Cleveland Clinic , consistently ranked one of the best hospitals in America. Forum: The Neurology and Neurosurgery Forum
Topic: Lupus
Subject: Behcets and CNS Involvement
I have diagnosed with SLE and Behcets. I have seizures because of the SLE that have been fairly well controlled mostly by prednisone. After developing huge hard palate mouth sores, nasal sores and sometimes genital sores, the doctors diagnosed Behcets. I am being encouraged to try Thalidomide and will probably start this as of the beginning of the year. I do know that Behcets can affect the CNS also and Im wondering what the symptoms might be and how would you differenciate the SLE from the Behcets? Is the treatment the same? The docs are concerned since I also have slight kidney involvement and the ulcers are now appearing on my hands and feet. It seems that each time these terrible ulcers and joint pain, excruciating headaches occur the only thing that alleviates them at all is prednisone in fairly large doses, is this the normal treatment for these two diseases? It is very difficult to research this myself as there is very little information on Behcets to be found. Thank you for your time and this wonderful forum!

Current concepts in Behcet's disease
Summary
Background – Behcet's Disease (BD) is an idiopathic, chronic, multi system disorder characterized by an episodic course, and a variety of manifestations, which can vary considerably among different patients with BD. Findings - Concepts in the etiology and treatment of BD were reviewed by Evereklioglu of Erciyes Univ. in Kayseri, Turkey. Most investigators believe that a primary defect in BD is a dysfunction of vascular endothelium. In mild cases of BD, manifestations may be limited to orogenital ulcers and skin lesions. In more extensive involvement, occlusive vasculitis of arteries and/ or veins of any size occurs. This particularly involves the retinal and anterior segmental vasculature of the eye (present in over 50% of cases). When bilateral, such ocular involvement can lead to blindness. Pulmonary, G-I and CNS involvement seen in some cases can be life threatening. It has been postulated that immuno pathology involving agents such as phosphoantigens, super antigens, heat shock proteins may lead to the vascular abnormalities. Nitric oxide, endothelin and homocysteine have been considered as pathogenic mediators. A variety of immunosuppressive/anti/ anti-inflammatory agents have been tried to treat BD with variable benefit reported. There has been recent increased interest in thalidomide and TNF receptor antagonist agents in BD treatment.

Behcet's disease
What is Behcet's disease?
Behcet's disease is a rare disease characterised by painful mouth ulcers, genital ulcers, eye problems and skin lesions. The disease is named after the Turkish dermatologist Hulusi Behcet who first described the syndrome in 1924.
What causes Behcet's disease?
The cause of Behcet's disease is unknown but it is presumed to be an autoimmune disorder. This is where an individual's immune system starts reacting against his or her own tissues. The reason for this remains a mystery but it is possible bacterial or viral infection may have a role in its development.
Who is at risk of Behcet's disease?
Behcet's disease is most common and more serious in people with Silk Road bloodlines. Silk Road countries include those in the Mediterranean basin, Middle East and Far East; the incidence is around 1 in 10,000 people. However, Behcet's disease is seen worldwide even in those with other ethnic heritage; in the US the incidence is reported to be 1 in 20,000. In people with Silk Road ancestry, Behcet's disease is more common in men than in women. However, the trend is reversed with more women than men being affected in people of other ethnic origins. The disease can develop at any age but is most common as people reach 20-30 years.

BEHCET'S ONTARIO Welcome to our web site "It is our goal to reach out to everyone, and provide as much information and support so that we may educate, understand and alleviate the isolation experienced with Behcet's."
Behcet's is a multi-system vascular disease that can attack any part of the body where there is blood supply. It is a life long condition that has no cause, no cure to date.
ABOUT US We are two women that suffer from this rare and chronic disease. After trying to find answers to a lot of our questions and doing much research on Behcet's we finally found each other. It was on a Behcet's internet message board. Much to our surprise we both lived in Ontario and in the same city. We were only five minutes away from each other. This was great news. At last we had someone to talk to who could understand what was going on. After many emails and phone calls we finally met. We didn't realize how many health issues we had in common.
On a regular basis we both deal with headaches, mouth and genital ulcers, vision and intestinal problems, stroke like symptoms, brain lesions, skin lesions, arthritis, inflammation and chronic pain not to mention the frustration and isolation we both felt. Although we were diagnosed 5 years apart we had both progressed to having central nervous system problems and now have Neuro-Behcet's. WHY THIS PAGE?
