What is applied behavior analysis?
What is ABA? There are probably a hundred people who have written answers, but please bear with me. "Applied" means practice, rather than research or philosophy. "Behavior analysis" may be read as "learning theory," that is, understanding what leads to (or doesn't lead to) new skills. (This is a simplification: ABA is just as much about maintaining and using skills as about learning.) It may seem odd to use the word "behavior" when talking about learning to talk, play, and live as a complex social animal, but to a behaviorist all these can be taught, so long as there are intact brain functions to learn and practice the skills. (That is the essence of the recovery hypothesisthat for many children, the excesses and deficits of autism result largely from a learning 'blockage,' which can be overcome by intensive teaching.) Typically developing children learn without our interventionthat is, the 'typical' environment they are born into provides the right conditions to learn language, play, and social skills. (After a few years, however, this breaks down, and we no longer learn everything 'naturally'it takes a very structured environment, for example, for most of us to learn to read, write, and do arithmetic.)

IS YOUR CHURCH TEACHING PAGAN EARTH WORSHIP IN SUNDAY SCHOOL? By Tom DeWeese
January 17, 2005
NewsWithViews.com Many parents have sought to protect their children from the behavior-modification programs that have taken the place of academic education in public schools. To escape the assault of Outcome-Based Education (OBE), multi-culturalism, and workforce training programs, parents in ever-increasing numbers are placing their children in private schools or are home-schooling. Public schools, and even some private schools, spend valuable classroom time engaged in "cooperative" learning (group learning) encounter sessions and discussion groups that employ pop psychology that teachers are simply not qualified to apply. These programs are designed for a very specific purpose to change the attitudes, values and beliefs of your children in order to prepare them to be proper environmental citizens in the “sustainable” global village. Such behavior-modification programs are the very root of the destruction of America's public education system.

Behavior treatment
involves both social and psychological therapies. It is a very important part of treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) in children and teens. Behavior modification or behavior therapy is also called psychosocial treatment. It works by changing the behavior of a child or adolescent. Research shows that behavioral treatments work well for the symptoms of AD/HD, especially when they are used with stimulant medication. Treating AD/HD in children often involves medical, educational, and behavioral treatments used together. Treatment should be planned and carried out only after learning what individual needs each child and family have. Why use behavioral treatments? Behavioral treatment for AD/HD is important because it helps with issues such as:
  • problems doing well in school behavior problems at school problems with friendships with others their age problems getting along with parents and with brothers and sisters
Behavioral treatments work by teaching new skills to parents, teachers and the children for handling problems.

What is a True 'Behavior Modification' Process? by Nora J. Baladerian, Ph.D.
President, Emancipation Project
Many years ago, B.F. Skinner, a psychologist, developed a philosophy about influencing the behavior of children which was later applied to anyone, including oneself, to change any behavior. Initially the idea was to inculcate positive behaviors into children and to eliminate negative behaviors. He discovered that behaviors are repeated more often and with more vigor when they receive an immediate and strong emotional response from others, particularly others important to the person. One unique example, is when a child is in a room filled with adults and stands on a coffee table or chair and performs some proscribed act such as using bad words, people tend to laugh and pay a great deal of attention, thus, using Skinner’s language, “reinforcing” the behavior. In other words, the very positive response of enjoyment displayed directly and immediately to the behavior, will likely inspire repetitions of the behavior. He also discovered that when any behavior is completely ignored, it is not likely to be repeated. He determined to research this, and found that most children receive most attention immediately after doing something the parents do not want him to do. Thus, the child is rewarded with attention. He found that the children did not respond so much to a differentiation of negative and positive behavior (yelling or spanking versus exuberant praise or hugging) as much as a differentiation between no attention and some attention. How interesting.

Introduction
Behavioral disorders also known as conduct disorders are one of the most common forms of psycho pathology among children and young adults and is the most frequently cited reason for referral to mental health services. The appearance of behavioral disorders is increasing dramatically in our K-12 classrooms. As a result their presence severely constrains the ability of the school systems to educate students effectively. The prevalence of behavioral problems among children and young adults is substantial. Many surveys indicate that behavioral disorders vary among young adults, ranging from 2 and 6% in K-12 students. This percentage translates into 1.3 to 3.8 million cases of behavioral disorders among the school and pre-college population. Behavioral disorders become apparent when the student displays a repetitive and impact persistent pattern of behavior that results in the significant disruption in other students. Such disturbances may cause significant impairments in academic, social, and or occupational functioning. Such a behavior pattern is consistent throughout the individuals life. Among the characteristics of a behavioral disorder among children and adolescents are:

TEACCH is starting to be well known all over the world for the excellent services provided to autistic people and is often used as a model as a result. However several misconceptions have been spread and it seems to be good to give some basic information that will hopefuly give a faithful description of the TEACCH Program. First of all, TEACCH is not a single approach and even less a method. It is a state program that tries to respond to the needs of autistic people using the best available approaches and methods known so far for educating them and to provide the maximum level of autonomy that they can achieve. If some people have ported successfully out of North Carolina and even out of the United States some elements of this program, the only complete implementation of TEACCH as a State Program remains the one of North Carolina. For the sake of my European friends, I should add that we were quite lucky in porting some of the TEACCH program in Europe thanks to Theo Peters, a Belgium professional who received training in N.C. and helped a lot of European professionals and parents get up to speed with modern views on autism. The program in Antwerpen is pretty near to most of the achievements of those in N.C. and constitutes a closer reference for visits in Europe...

Personalized System of Instruction: Behavior Modification in Education
Psychology Club Talk
Howard Gallup
April 11, 1995 Behavior Modification in Education is a huge topic. It covers such diverse issues as operating a token economoy program in an institution, say, for the severely retarded; or activities by a school psychologist to help a student overcome fears, or to alter anti-social or acting-out behavior. It also covers attempts to program the instruction in schools, one of the earliest of which involved teaching machines or programmed instruction in the 1950's, now replaced by computer assisted instruction. Such programs were introduced at all levels of education. I want to spend this noon talking about one program, which had its beginning in the early 1960's at the University of Brasilia. But first, a little personal history. I started my teaching career in 1951 as a graduate assistant instructor at the University of Pennsylvania, followed by 2 years at Hobart College beginnng in 1956; I came to Lafayette in the summer of 1958 with no training as a teacher; I had simply observed my professors and my older colleagues. I was very interested in human learning, and had almost selected it as my PhD dissertation topic. "Learning" at Penn meant knowing the theories of Hull, Guthrie, Tolman, and the Gestalt psychologists in order to discredit them. The issues were classical conditioning, or rats in a maze, or human verbal learning, largely memorization of nonsense syllables. Skinner was never mentioned. But I had a friend teaching at Harvard who talked about Skinner, who wrote an article on Teaching Machines with Skinner, and who sent me a pre-publication copy of Skinner's Verbal Behavior in manuscript form which someone "borrowed" and never returned.

You hear often that there is a time and place for everything. I see it at my local warehouse-type grocery store all the time. Some child behaving badly and a parent promising to buy the little darling a treat if they "can just keep it together until we get to the car." Many parents even have the system worked out ahead of time with poker chips, check marks, or even money as the prize for good behavior. Of course, bad behavior means the loss of the same dear item and the bountiful harvest. Some parents are on to the faulty logic, realizing that some of the techniques they use to manage their children's lives no longer work after some unseen milestone or over time. Yet, can behavior modification work at all when trying to instill good habits or attempting to break bad ones?

Unwanted behavior is the number one cause for pets losing their homes. It is worthwhile to treat behavior problems seriously and thoroughly. Treating behavior problems saves lives. Most pet behavior problems result from normal behavior such as scratching, biting, eliminating or escaping. Some problem behavior can be managed by teaching a pet to respond to commands or confining pets when they are not supervised. Some behavior problems stem from a pet's failure to obey commands, such as a dog failing to come when called while chasing cars. Behavior that is dangerous or has become an established habit requires behavior modification through pairing the behavior with consequences while establishing a more appropriate competing behavior.
    Destructive Behavior
The most common complaint with young dogs is destructive behavior. Destructive behavior is usually an easy problem to solve because it is directly related to supervision. When a dog is with you, he'll consistently be reprimanded when he picks up your belongings and SHOULD be consistently rewarded for playing with his own toys. When you dog is not with you, he can be safely confined in a puppy proof area of your home or yard. If you are gone for long periods of time you may have difficulty confining the dog adequately while still providing sufficient exercise and enrichment. Consider having a dog walker come during the day or installing a dog run or enrolling your dog in day care at a kennel that can provide a stimulating environment for a growing dog.
