Go Shopping! * "On Good Behavior" Premiere Column In the mid 1970's, I began working for a small humane society in Oregon. I had little experience with animals and even less experience with the realities of pet overpopulation. Each day I answered phone calls from pet owners who wanted advice about how to fix their pets' behavior problems. The most common types of problems were chronic barking, digging or jumping on guests simple problems for which I had no simple solutions. Another type of call came from owners who wished to release their pets to the shelter. Our policy was to tell the owners that the shelter should be used as a last resort and that they should keep the animal if possible. After a very short time I realized that there was a clear connection between these two types of phone calls. I remember one particular call that radically changed my attitude about our shelter policies. I spoke to a man who was angry because his German Shorthaired pointer had destroyed over $1000.00 worth of drapes. I attempted to persuade him to work through his problems and keep the dog. His reply pointed out the weakness of my position. "If you are so sure that I should keep him, can you tell me how to stop him from doing it again? Are you willing to pay if he ruins the next batch of curtains?" The man added that advising someone to keep such a pet without telling him how to fix the problem was ridiculous and naive. To make matters worse, the man had adopted the dog from the shelter, several months before, based on the assurances of a very mistaken shelter worker me.

Towards a New Alternative to Behavior Modification and Understanding Why Consequences is Not an Effective Tool (This paper is adapted from the forthcoming books The Stress Model
and Family-Centered Regulatory Parenting) Parents find it difficult to not use consequences as a tool for detouring negative behavior in their children. This paper will discuss a new alternative to parenting and behavior modification with expanded emphasis on why parent formulated consequences are not an effective tool for short term altering of behavior demonstrated by children and not ultimately not effective for long term developmental change. "Natural" Consequences versus Parent Formulated Consequences A number of leading mental health professionals in the field today as well as in the past have advocated for the child to take responsibility for her actions. This has implied that if the child does not take responsibility there will be a resultant consequence. Indeed this is perhaps the most commonly recommended course of action for parents to take in working to overcome their children's problem behavior. This is most commonly mislabeled as a "natural" consequence. Wherein upon making a mistake or the wrong choice the child is forced with the outcome of their inappropriate behavior having to deal with the parent imposed consequences. These parent imposed consequences related to the misbehavior have been mistakenly labeled "natural."

Three tools used in Behavior Modification are positive and negative reinforcement and cueing. The goal of a program of behavior modification is to change and adjust behavior that is inappropriate or undesirable in some way. When embarking on a program of behavior modification it is important is that the undesirable behaviors be isolated and observed. With this observation comes awareness of the behaviors, on the part of both the parent and teacher and also on the part of the individual whose behavior is being modified. With this awareness, comes a greater goal of understanding the cause and effect of the behaviors, and thus affect change. In many cases , some form of behavior modification along with cognitive therapy and medication therapy are the preferred methods of treatment for disorders such as AD(H)D, and Conduct Disorders. Behavior modification and cognitive therapy are the principle forms of treatment for disorders such as Eating Disorders and Substance Abuse.

Most behavior problems can be resolved through obedience training. Positive obedience training is implemented in areas where a behavior problem occurs. Example; a dog will always jump on people, solution, teach a solid sit and stay. A dog that is sitting cant jump. A solid foundation of obedience will give your dog a purpose, and something positive to do for their master. Learning obedience is the equivalent to a child learning their a,b,c's and 1-2-3. At K9 Solutions Center, all obedience is based on "Purely Positive" training, and positive motivation for the dog. We rarely use food reward. The reward of accomplishment and pleasing their master is one of the greatest motivations for a dog. Price: We offer a free consultation, after the consultation, we will give you two different price and payment options. We can quote you a total class price based on the amount of time we estimate it will take to correct the behavior problem. The second option is to pay an hourly rate. The rate for behavior modification is $35.00 per hour. These are 2 hour sessions. Travel time is $.35 cents per mile from our Brookville Ohio office. If you are less then 30 miles from our office, the travel is included in the price of training. Any more time than 2 hours, the dog gets tired and the training is not productive. We do have a 2 hour minimum for our sessions. K9 Solutions Center will work with you, and make sure the training your dog needs is available. We also offer billing for approved clients.

Tourette Syndrome (TS) is a neurological disorder characterized by repeated, involuntary body movements (tics) such as blinking, twitching, shoulder shrugging, or leg jerking and vocal sounds such as throat clearing or sniffing. Symptoms typically appear before the age of 18 and the condition occurs in all ethnic groups with males affected 3 to 4 times more often than females. Associated conditions can include obsessivity, attentional problems, and impulsiveness. Since many people with TS have yet to be diagnosed, there are no absolute figures, but the official estimate by the National Institutes of Health is that 100,000 Americans have full-blown TS. Symptoms include: * Multiple motor and one or more vocal tics at some time during the illness, although not necessarily simultaneously

    SIT
The sit command is one of the easiest commands a dog will learn. This command can be taught from the day your puppy/dog is brought home. Due to the construction of a dogs neck and spine, it is physically impossible for them to look upwards. In order for a dog to look up at something high they must assume the sitting position. This is why it is one of the easier commands to teach. The "Sit" Command:
  • Stand facing your puppy/dog. Let your dog see/sniff a treat in your hand. Move your hand up and over their head – it is natural for your dog to sit in order to keep eye contact with the treat. Give the "sit" command when you see your puppy/dog begin to sit down. Reinforce the sit command with verbal praise (something like: "Sit…Good Boy…sit") and food treats.
  • Tips:
    • When Giving the command "sit", say it only once. This is so your puppy/dog doesn’t learn to associate the command with repetition of the command.

Remember, the treats are used as a salary or reward, not as a bribe. If you bribe a problem dog, you are defeated before the start. It is often difficult to work with a problem dog that has learned to manipulate bribes, but there are creative ways - often using the use of head collars - to correct this situation. First, find a food that the dog likes and that it does not usually experience. Suggestions include boiled, slivered chicken or tiny pieces of cheese. Boiled, shredded chicken can be frozen in small portions and defrosted as needed. Individually wrapped slices of cheese can be divided into tiny pieces suitable for behavior modification while still wrapped in plastic, minimizing waste and mess. Consider the following guidelines in choosing a food reward:

Teacher, meet ad guy. Ad guy, meet teacher. You two could learn a LOT from each other in this braver, grimmer, faster, more authentic world. But I can sum up my feelings as: Teachers need to get better at motivation Advertisers need to get better at... caring and honesty (Not to mention things like REAL retention and recallsomething teachers know a little something about...) Advertising (in its conventional, old-school form) may indeed be dying. Meanwhile teachers/instructors are struggling more than ever to get learners to pay attention and learn. But I believe both groups could improve their results if they took a lesson from the other. Advertisers need to care, and be honestsomething teachers can be quite proud of. Teachers, on the other hand, need to work on their motivationthe domain that advertisers have (or had ) down.

Be sure to put your name in the right hand corner of your paper. Title your paper "Respect". We all need and deserve to be respected. However, we cannot respect others when we don't respect ourselves. When you are rude, put people down, talk negatively, or insult people, you are hurting your respect for yourself as well as for others. Everyone needs to feel good about themselves in order to get along with others. When someone does not feel good about himself or herself, he or she speaks and acts in ways that hurt others. When you don't feel good about yourself, everyone loses.
