April 2003
THIS IS THE VERSION FOR BROWSERS WITHOUT FRAMES. IT'S NOT AS GOOD AND MAY NOT ACTUALLY WORK. This is an account of our walk across the North of England following Wainwright's Coast to Coast route. It is a journal that we both tried to add to at the end of each day. My entries are in bold and Claire's are in normal type. If you run your mouse over the underlined text, a related photo will appear in the box to the right. Clicking on the underlined text will open a larger version of the picture in a new window.
Enjoy!
Day Zero - 1st April
Train from New Street to Carlisle. Carlisle smells of dog poo. Claire V. excited, not necessarily about the smell of dog poo just the trip in general. After 2 weeks of glorious weather, sky looks ver dark. Another little train to St Bees . We get off train, start walking, heavens open, waterproofs come out. We walk up and along the headland . V. nice. Sun come out. Sweating starts. Waterproofs come off. “Claire look at that fast moving fog coming this way”. “Oh dear” Waterproofs back on, hail comes down. Spot lighthouse and realise it’s not far. Go to beach (Fleswick) in sunshine, Climb out in rain. Passed St Bees Lighthouse and arrived @ TarnFlatt Hall. Paid £4 each for bunkhouse. Fairly meagre with “cooking slab” but did have shower. Now 18.20 and waiting for pasta and sausage.
Height gained = 140m
Distance = 4 miles
Predicted Pikkachu = 11000
Actual Pikkachu = 15300 (include Carlisle + home + trains)
Not much else for me to say. Took a long time to get here. Boots are comfortable at the moment. Carlisle really did smell bad, but saw all the sights - train station, Woolworth’s, Edinburghe Woolen Mill, bit like Wells but plus a train station! It did rain on us a few times…but never lasted more than 5 minutes. 5 star hotel tonight!! Food smelling good, Dave’s gone to get a fire going!! Breakfast: Hot-Cross buns Lunch: Chicken sandwiches (really good) Tea: sausage + tom + herbs Hairstyle - ponytail Sore foot rating -

Native stingless bees are quite happy to make their nest anywhere, but prefer hollow logs, trees and rock shelters. Image: Wendy Pyper [ more pics Most stingless bee keepers are not after honey. Rather, they enjoy the sense of conserving a native species whose original habitat is being increasingly cleared and developed. In return, the bees pollinate crops, garden flowers and bushland during their search for nectar and pollen. Stingless bees usually nest in hollow trunks and branches of trees, or rock crevices, but they have been encountered in wall cavities, old garbage bins, water metres and 44-gallon drums! However, most bee keepers keep bees in their original log hive or transfer them to a wooden box. Like the European Honey Bee ( Apis mellifera ), which provide most of Australia's commercially produced honey, stingless bees have enlarged areas on their back legs for carrying pollen back to the hive. After a foraging expedition, these pollen baskets or

The Phillips' Beekeeping Collection at Cornell's Albert R. Mann Library is one of the largest and most complete apiculture libraries in the world. The Hive and the Honey Bee grew out of a presentation on the Phillips collection at the 2002 Eastern Apiculture Society conference and is something of a digital child of that print collection. At present, it consists of the full text of ten rare books from the Phillips Collection, and each book is fully searchable. End of Season Profile
One of baseball's mysteries, here: Somehow this team qualified for a playoff slot despite poor pitching, weak defense, and dreadful baserunning. The team featured a handful of talented players, and a bunch of role players. Joe Szekely stitched together a patchwork team and made a respectable season. Kyle Middleton started the summer in the Burlington bullpen, but earned a rotation spot and a 14-5 won/lost record. Chris Tierney also pitched well in the rotation, but was the victim of bad luck. Jorge Vasquez and Barry Armitage both pitched well from the 'pen. No one else pitched well in any role. Second baseman Ruben Gotay had a very good season, and several othersoutfielders Odannys Ayala and James Shanks, and first baseman Chris Fallonall seem solid talents. That's where Szekely's talent ran thin, as the rest of the hitters were generally weak.

    About the Walk
Wainwright's Coast to Coast walk is a 190 mile route following existing rights of way from St. Bees Head, through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors National Parks, to Robin Hood's Bay. It is not an "official" long distance path, but has almost become one by its popularity. There are a number of places where there are optional routes to cater for the weather and/or the relative fitness of the walker. There are many alternatives for overnight accommodation and daily mileage, but most people do the walk in about 13 or 14 days. The popularity of the walk has made it possible for a "Pack Horse" service to be provided to ferry luggage from one night's stop to the next and many walkers, particularly the older ones take advantage of this facility. Most of the route follows good paths, tracks and roads, with few of the peat bogs which are so prevalent on some sections of the Pennine Way. In most parts the walking is relatively easy, especially for those who omit the high route alternatives. In some parts the route is well signposted with "Coast to Coast" signs, but in others there is no mention of this and the only indicators are normal footpath or bridleway signposts.

More about Him

Did you ever eat (or throw away) a watermelon that tasted more like the rind than the sweet watermelon you were expecting? If so, your watermelon did not get pollinated well enough when it was only a blossom. How does a blossom get pollinated? The answer is bees. Bees gather pollen and nectar that they find in the blossoms. If bees don't go into the blossoms to forage for food, the blossoms won't make seeds. Without seeds, most fruits and vegetables won't develop properly and they won't taste good.

Introduction
This web site is about the bees found living in Florida, USA. It is designed to help facilitate their identification by serving as a virtual reference collection and to help point out the key features used in identifying bees to family, genus, and species. It is organized taxonomically-bees are grouped by family, subfamily, genus, subgenus, and species. The links at the top of each page can take you to the linked pages within each group, up one level, and to my home page. Due to the many images found associated with the species, a high speed internet connection is highly recommended (cable modem, dsl, or higher speed). The bees of Florida include members of six families of bees, the Colletidae (26 taxa), Melittidae (2 taxa), Andrenidae (63 taxa), Halictidae (66 taxa), Megachilidae (72 taxa), and

Welcome to The Amazing Beecam! Beecam is an electronic CCD (Charged Coupling Device) camera we have trained on an observation hive in our laboratory. This camera periodically takes 26 snapshots of the bottom frame of bees at close range. Those frames are sent to you one after another as an almost-live animation.
Hive Conditions
Here are a few conditions related to the hive that you may or may not be able to see:
  • Temperature: normal (self-regulated by the bees!) Humidity: low Honey Supply: full top frame Queen: active
Please note
"Dirt road" connections may be slow. The introduction of Beecam contains animated GIF files that are about 130KB each. The final Beecam animation (almost live) contains 26 frames which are about 10KB each. We've put a lot of hard work into this, so we think it's worth the wait! You decide...
About The Amazing Beecam
We bring it to you almost live The Beecam is a CCD camera fixed at close range pointing towards a double-frame observation hive. The hive is made of wooden frames and glass panels. Twenety-six one-half-size frames are grabbed within milliseconds of each other every twenty minutes. After they are captured, the server waits for a request to be made for the page you are about to see. The frames are then sent to you a fast as possible one right after another for a sort of `almost live' movie on-line.
