Pollination and Bees
Pest Management Home Page
Honey bee numbers have declined dramatically across much of the United States, due in large part to the varroa mite, the tracheal mite, and the viruses vectored by the latter species. Honey bee decline is a direct threat to agricultural production, and this Web site has been established to help disseminate information on pollinators. We encourage individuals and researchers to contribute new information on pollinators such as the honey bee, the hornfaced bee and the blue orchard mason bee. We currently expect to post new material within two weeks of its receipt. Welcome to readers of The Furrow magazine. We hope you use this site to supplement information in the November article, "Calling All Pollinators". 144. The Coast To Coast Bike Ride
by Nick Bauer of a trip by five friends following the Coast to Coast route by bike from St bees Head to Robin Hoods Bay. Five day trip, staying at youth hostels. Clear maps and descriptions of the route.......
http://homepages.tesco.net/~c2c/
Coast Coast This site was constructed
by me, Nick Bauer. The coast 2 coast is a mixture of road
and off-road cycling from St Bees Head to
Robin Hoods Bay with a distance
of two hundred and
ten miles.
The route takes you across
spectacular scenery, starting in
The Lake District, crossing The Pennines
and finally the North Yorkshire Moors. Okay, so it's been nearly two years since our quest to ride from one side of the country to the other, but here it is, an insight to what is known to walkers and cyclists as the Coast 2 Coast. Having completed The Three Peak Twenty Four Hour challenge the previous year in 1996 and by coming to the end of that year the urge was there to do something in the following year. So thinking caps on and we came up with the coast 2 coast ride. Not a new thing I hear you say, but hey its out there to be done!! The challenge bit comes from not doing it in seven to ten days as suggested, but in five days. Five days I hear you say, where's the challenge in that? Well add to myself, four other candidates of varying fitness levels and a van driver things start to hot up a bit. The candidates include Steve Biggs and Dave Allaway, with whom I did the Three Peaks, and which Steve has a successful web site (link address at the bottom), two new recruits to the team, Dan Ball and JMC otherwise known as John McDonald. Oh and not forgetting the most important member of the team (besides myself), our van driver Roger Biggs.

Welcome to the website of Park Celtic Under 14 Bs
We play soccer in Dublin, Ireland. The team consists of boys born in 1990. We have now been playing 11-a-side matches for four seasons. There are seventeen players in the squad and three on the coaching/management team. As in previous seasons we once again lost a few of our better players to the A team and had some new players join us.
This season 2004/2005 has gone reasonably well over the first half of the season with two wins, two draws and a few narrow losses. As the team with it's new players is at last maintaining a consistent level of performance, we hope to win a lot more matches in the latter half of the season. Apart from playing in the South Dublin Football League we will also be competing in the S.D.F.L. Cup and the S.D.F.L. League Cup.

The Internet Apiculture and Beekeeping Archive Welcome to the Archive. Here you will find the articles from the Usenet newsgroup sci.agriculture.beekeeping , the logs from the listserv bee-l FAQ files , and pointers to other beekeeping and apicultural resources , on and off the Internet. Browse the complete archive. Search the complete archive.
(Results will be a weekly bee-l log and/or a monthly news article file. You will then need to use your browser to search for your keyword.) Apiculture is very diverse; our fostering of several insect species to pollinate our crops and produce honey, wax, propolis and venom occurs worldwide. The old beekeeping adage: "There are as many ways to keep bees as there are beekeepers" describes this amazing diversity in beekeeping. Logically then, there is no "proper" way to keep bees, no "right" way to manage for honey production, or to rear queensthe best we can do as good beekeepers and as good neighbors is to share our techniques, lore, knowledge and experiences, basing them upon a rigorous foundation in insect biology. To assume though, that this foundation is stable, would be naive. Every year, new research, and new facts about the fascinating lives our eusocial friends the Honey Bees lead, help us to be more successful beekeepers. This archive is a repository for beekeeping information. If you have trouble finding something, or if you want to add something, please do not hesitate to contact Adam Finkelstein by e-mail:

148. Remarks
That the Fable of the bees is a performance of this kind, may be easily shewn, not by general encomiums, but by pointing out its particular excellencies.

Remarks upon the Fable of the Bees.
by Frances Hutcheson
REMARKS
UPON
The FABLE of the BEES. To Hibernicus. Nunquam aliud natura aliud sapientia decit.
Juven. SIR, A Great part of your readers must have heard of a book entituled, Private Vices public Benefits. I do not intend any answer to that book; but rather hereafter to shew it to be unanswerable, notwithstanding the zealous attempts of some of the clergy. Yet it is to be hoped that that author's performance will not supersede the labours of others on the same subject, without design of answering what he has wrote. What his own private happiness is, any one may know by reflecting upon the several sorts of pleasant perceptions he is capable of. We imagine our fellows capable of the same, and can in like manner conceive public happiness. They are happy who have what they desire, and are free from what occasions pain. He is in a sure state of happiness, who has a sure prospect that in all parts of his existence he shall have all things which he desires, or at least those which he most earnestly desires, without any considerable pains. He is miserable who is under grievous pain, or who wants what he most violently desires. There is one old distinction of our desires, according as some of them are preceded naturally by a sense of pain, previously to any opinion of good to be found in the object; which is desired chiefly in order to remove the pain; whereas other desires arise only upon a previous opinion of good in the object, either to ourselves, or to those we love. These desires, though they do not presuppose any sense of pain previous to the opinion, yet may be attended with pain, when the object imagined to be good is uncertain. The former sort of desires are called appetites; the latter affections or passions. The pains of the appetites when they are not gratified are unavoidable. But the pains of many disappointed passions might have been prevented, by correcting the false opinions, or by breaking foolish associations of ideas, by which we imagine the most momentous good or evil to be in these objects or events, which really are of little or no consequence in themselves.

INTRODUCTION

Have you ever wondered how honey bees make honey? Did you know honey bees are a very important part of the pollination process? A Honey bee is no ordinary insect, but rather an extraordinary insect! Honey bees are amazing creatures! Unfortunately, that's not how the executives at Ridit Pest Control see them. Like many people, the executives at Ridit think honey bees are just pesky insects! They are currently working on the development of a special pesticide that will "wipe out" all honey bees around the world and make them extinct. We need your help in saving the honey bees!
TASK You will visit several websites to learn about honeybees. After researching these fascinating insects, you will complete the following two assignments:
  • Draw and color a picture of a flower. Next, draw and color the same flower the way a honeybee would see it. In groups of 3 or 4, write a letter to the executives at Ridit Pest Control persuading them to
