101. Attack Of The "Killer Bees" - Africanized Honey Bees (DesertUSA)
Outdoor safety in the presence of Killer bees in the USA.
http://www.desertusa.com/mag98/sep/stories/kbees.html
Attack of the "Killer Bees"
Africanized Honey Bees (AHB) also called "Africanized bees" or "killer bees" are descendants of southern African bees imported in 1956 by Brazilian scientists attempting to breed a honey bee better adapted to the South American tropics. When some of these bees escaped quarantine in 1957, they began breeding with local Brazilian honey bees, quickly multiplying and extended their range throughout South and Central America at a rate greater than 200 miles per year. In the past decade, AHB began invading North America. Africanized bees acquired the name "killer bees" because they will viciously attack people and animals who unwittingly stray into their territory, often resulting in serious injury or death. It is not necessary to disturb the hive itself to initiate an AHB attack. In fact, Africanized bees have been know to respond viciously to mundane occurrences, including noises or even vibrations from vehicles, equipment and pedestrians. Though their venom is no more potent than native honey bees, Africanized bees attack in far greater numbers and pursue perceived enemies for greater distances. Once disturbed, colonies may remain agitated for 24 hours, attacking people and animals within a range of a quarter mile from the hive.

St Bees Lighthouse
Position 54° 30'.82 N 03° 38'.10 W
South of the harbours of Maryport, Workington and Whitehaven, sandy beaches and grassy foreshores give way to cliffs around St. Bees Head, a high promontory, which was a danger to small coastal vessels trading between the ports of Wales and the Solway Firth. In 1718, Trinity House obtained a patent for the building of a lighthouse on the Head and in turn leased it to a private individual Thomas Lutwige, for ninety-nine years at an annual rent of £20. Lutwige undertook to erect the tower and maintain a light at his own expense. To provide him with an income, dues were levied at a rate of three-half pence a ton on cargo carried by vessels calling at the nearby ports of Whitehaven, Maryport and Workington. Lutwige built a strong round tower 9 metres in height and 5 metres in diameter, probably of local sandstone on top of which was a large metal grate into which the keepers tipped loads of coal. Work was strenuous particularly on windy nights and the keepers were rewarded with a weekly wage of seven shillings. The small grate led to continual complaints from shipowners because on windy nights the light was variable in intensity and often shrouded in thick smoke.

Classification and Origin of Honeybees
Honeybees have been classified as follows: Kingdom Animalia
Phylum Arthropoda
Class Insecta
Order Hymenoptera
Family Apiidae
Genus Apis
Species Apis mellifera Honeybees probably originated in Tropical Africa and spread from South Africa to Northern Europe and East into India and China. They were brought to the Americas with the first colonists and are now distributed world-wide. The first bees appear in the fossil record in deposits dating about 40 million years ago in the Eocene. At about 30 million years before present they appear to have developed social behavior and structurally are virtually identical with modern bees.
Who's Who in the Hive
A typical small hive contains perhaps 20,000 bees and these are divided into three types: Queen, Drone, and Worker. The chart below compares these types:

There are 25,000 kinds of bees identified in the world. The most well know being the honeybee. In the United States there are a known 3,500 species. Most bees do not live in large groups, they are solitary bees. The honeybee is not a native of the United States. The first bees were brought to the U.S. from Holland. Later other bees were brought from many other countries. South America had some honey bees but they did not produce much honey. When honeybees were brought to the United States, Native Americans called them "white mans flies". Soon bees became a known site in the Americas. In Brazil, honeybees did not survive well and scientist brought African Bees to Brazil. These bees were found to be very aggressive and mistakenly escaped into the wild. These bees are very common in Brazil now.

By Daniel Terdiman Also by this reporter 02:00 AM Oct. 18, 2004 PT Following Wednesday's third presidential debate, an out-of-place poster with a large cartoon image of a grinning bee appeared on the wall of a room packed with spinmeisters brandishing Bush-Cheney and Kerry-Edwards signs. Most people who saw it on CNN that night probably didn't even notice it, but fans of a game called I Love Bees knew it was a shout out to them from a team of the game's players at Arizona State University, the site of that evening's debate.

Miner Bees
General Information Biology Other Resources Miner Bees Anthophora abrupta , Anthophoridae: Hymenoptera
Miner bees (or chimney bees) are one of many familiar black and yellow summertime bees often mistaken for bumble bees. These, however, are solitary bees that do not collect honey and do not sting, though they could bite if handled roughly. They are garden pollinators and serve an increasingly important role as honey bee populations decline. Gardeners can actually enhance miner bee populations by providing dried mud blocks for nesting.
Biology
Miner bees are found across most of the eastern US from March to September depending upon climate. In NC they emerge in May and are active about 8 weeks. They normally nest in bare, hard soil, more often on steep slopes or vertical surfaces of adobe or hard clay. They have also been collected burrowing between stones of old chimneys built with non-cement mortar. Some of the flowers they have been recorded visiting are azalea, Oenothera, Penstemon, Rubus, Asclepias, Cornus, Delphinium, Iris, Monarda, Nepeta, Rosa, Diospyros, Melilotus, Trifolium and Pastinaca (parsnip). The miner bee nests in colonies of separate tunnels excavated into the hard clay. Females construct the nest, softening the hard clay with regurgitated water and removing clay particles with the mandibles. Most females build a single nest, but a few will build a second or even a third. Once the tunnel is about an inch in length, the female begins to carry clay pellets to the entrance to construct an exterior chimney. Tunnel lengths average almost 4.5 inches and chimney lengths vary, sometimes reaching more than three inches. Within each tunnel, five to eight cells are excavated and then lined with a clear fluid released from the Dufour's gland on the abdomen. This lining adds strength and water-proofing to the cell. Last instar larvae may also obtain nutrients by consuming this layer.

Bees
Order Hymenoptera
Leaf Cutting Bee ( Megachile sp., Family Megachilidae). Photo: B Hulbert. Bees belong to the insect Order Hymenoptera, which includes wasps, ants and sawflies. In Australia there are four main bee families: Apidae, Colletidae, Halictidae and Megachilidae. Many of these bees are solitary nesters, while others may share a nest. Others are fully social species. Although some bees sting, they are not considered to be pests as they play an important role in the Australian environment as key pollinators of many native plant species. Indigenous people have long used both the honey and the nests of native bees as valuable sources of food and wax. Commercially, the introduced Honey Bee is vital to the production of honey, but the cultivation of native bee species is also being investigated as a viable industry.
Honey Bee
Apis mellifera
Family Apidae
Like the European Wasp , the Honey Bee is an introduced social insect. Worker bees visit flowers in search of pollen during the summer months, and may sting if handled or caught in clothing. They are particularly attracted to clover flowers, so it is wise to be cautious if walking through clover patches. Like wasps, Honey Bees will vigorously defend their nests. Honey Bee stings are barbed and, when a person is stung, the sting (with venom gland attached) will stick in the skin and tear away from the bee. This injury kills the bee, but the venom gland continues to pump venom through the sting, so it should be removed as soon as possible. Do not squeeze it as this will force more venom into the wound. The sting is best removed by scraping it out with a fingernail.

Note to Hollywood: what you can learn from The Daily Show
Great interview in Wired with Daily Show host Jon Stewart and his partner Ben Karlin.
Here are two key excerpts to provide food for thought for those Hollywood types who want to muck with iTunes Music Store's success and want to turn TiVo into a mini-anti-fair-use machine:
In the six years since Stewart took over, the audience for The Daily Show has grown almost threefold to 1.4 million viewers a night. It boasts a legion of young, smart fans who are among the most demographically desirable audiences in the industry - further collapsing the caste distinctions between networks and cable. It has raised the bar for tie-ins, with a best-seller (America [The Book] has sold a stunning 2.5 million copies), a hit DVD (Indecision 2004), and - starting in October - a full-fledged spinoff (The Colbert Report). And The Daily Show may be the most popular TV program on the Internet.
