INFORMATION SHEET 21
Solitary Bees
With the arrival of Africanized honey bees in Arizona, there has been an increased interest in bees, wasps, and other flying creatures. One group of insects that have come to our attention are the so-called solitary bees. Not all bees live in large family groups like honey bees. In fact of all the bee species, over 90% are solitary bees. Female solitary bees prepare their own nest in the ground, in cracks or crevices in walls, or in wood. They gather nectar and pollen as food for their own offspring, and provide little or no further care after their eggs are laid. Solitary bees come in many different sizes, colors and shapes. Common solitary bees are mason bees, plasterer bees, digger bees, sweat bees and carpenter bees. They vary in color from basic black to bright metallic green, blue or red. Some solitary bees superficially resemble wasps. Although most live alone, some solitary bees build nests in groups or "aggregations." Solitary bees may nest close together because the site is particularly choice. Other species regularly nest near bees of the same kind, but each female builds its own nest. In a few species, several female bees use a single entrance hole in the ground, but each female builds her own chamber off a common tunnel. Have you ever seen the neat circles cut from leaves of roses or bougainvillea? Those are caused by a solitary bee known as the leafcutter bee. The leafcutter bee uses the leaf pieces to line her nest in a hollow twig, or any other opening about the diameter of a pencil. Favorite sites for nesting include tubes of lawn furniture or boring into urethane foam roofing material. Once the female has built her nest, she provisions it with a mixture of pollen and nectar. She lays her egg on the food. The egg hatches into a tiny grub that consumes the food over the period of a week or two, and then pupates. Depending on the time of year and the species of bee, the newly emerged adult bees may fly out of the nest to start new nests, or may stay underground protected in the nest until the following spring.

The orchard mason bee ( Osmia lignaria ) is a gentle beneficial insect that has potential as a pollinator of apples, cherries, and other tree fruits. It is found throughout most of North America, particularly in wooded areas but often around homes in towns and cities. Homeowners sometimes become concerned when they see the bee entering cavities under shake siding or investigating nail holes or other cavities in wood during March through early June. These are not destructive insects, since they do not excavate holes in the wood, though they will clean out loose debris. No controls are recommended, since no damage is done. To prevent the bee from nesting, holes may be filled with caulking. The orchard mason bee is usually slightly smaller than a honey bee and a shiny dark blue in color. The actual size of the bee depends largely upon the size of the hole in which it grew. Males (Fig. 1) are smaller than females, have longer antennae and an additional tuft of light colored hairs on the face. Females (Fig. 2) have hairs on the underside of the abdomen, called the "scopa", adapted for carrying pollen. Fig. 1 Male orchard bee. Note the long antennae. (The red coloring is caused by

Ants (Formicidae) You might be surprised that ants belong to this group of flying insects. Several times a year though the ants do actually fly. The animals that take off are males and young queens. After impregnation which takes place hight up in the air the males die and the queens try to find a place to start a new colony. The ants you normally see, hurrying from who-knows-where to who-wants-to-know-where are workers. These never get wings. In most European gardens you will see the (Common) Black Ant (also known as Slave Ant or Silky Ant in the USA). It is a close relative of the well known Red Wood Ant. To the left: probably a winged queen of the Southern (or Red) Wood Ant (Formica rufa). To the right: Even the Black Ant (Formica fusca) develops winged specimens. Closely related to the Black Ant is the Yellow Meadow Ant, often simply referred to as Yellow Ant. It too forms large colonies, but it prefers grass in which it makes small heaps. It leaves mainly underground and is seldom seen running about in the garden like the Black Ant. This is most probably the Yellow Meadow Ant (Lasius flavus).

One theme present in a large portion of the novel is the struggle for equal rights. There are many difficulties that Rosaleen, the three sisters, Zach and other blacks in the 60's face because of their color. Blacks were still looked at as the lesser minority, slaves to the white population (even after the Civil Rights Act), facing racism ever time they stepped out their door. Another theme is love. Lily yearns to be loved in the story, not yet sure just where she belongs. She is not loved at her own house, so she heads to Tiburon to see of she can fill the empty gap. In Tiburon she meets the three sisters and Zach, four people who open Lily's eyes and show her people do care about her. Then one of the main morals that is brought up over and over again is grief. Lily has a hard time dealing with her emotions and dosen't know how to handle them. She dosen't want to face the fact that she may have killed her mother and come to face the hardships of life. But, as a twelve year old girl who has never had much support, she needs guidance and advice from someone who will be there for her. Lily begins to see that she has these type of people now present in her life and begins to make the transformation from a child to a young adult.

    The Topic:
Bees Easier - Bees are four-winged, flower-feeding insects. They have enlarged hind feet, branched or feathered body hairs, and generally a stinger. Honeybees and bumblebees are the most common. Bumblebees are larger and stronger than honeybees. Bees are beneficial insects because they produce honey and pollinate crops. The honeybee is very popular. It has been adopted by at least sixteen states as the state insect. Harder - Honeybees (or hive bees) are in the animalia kingdom, the arthropoda phylum, the insecta class, the hymenoptera order and the apoidea family. Beekeepers are sometimes called apiarists. Honeybees and bumblebees (apidae subfamily) are social bees and live in colonies. Solitary bees make their own small family nests. There are 10,0000 - 20,000 species of bee including many wasplike and flylike bees. Most bees are small from 2 mm (.08 inches) long to 4 cm (1.6 inches) long. Bees and wasps are closely related. The main difference is that bees provide their young with pollen and honey, while wasps eat animal food, insects, or spiders. In addition, wasps have unbranched hairs.

The Coast to Coast Walk is a long distance trail, originally devised by A. Wainwright, across three of England’s most magnificent National Parks. Starting at St Bees on Cumbria’s west coast, the trail crosses the Lake District with its spectacular mountain scenery before crossing the Pennines and winding its way on through the beautiful Yorkshire Dales to Richmond. After climbing up on to the rugged and tranquil North Yorkshire Moors, the trail comes to an end after 190 miles at the lovely old fishing village of Robin Hood’s Bay on Yorkshire’s east coast. Typically Walkers complete the crossing in 12-15 days, although this is completely open ended - dependent on ability and personal preference. For Cyclists…
Although not permitted to follow exactly the same path as the walkers, various routes have been devised to allow cyclists to enjoy the same beautiful countryside in a Coast to Coast Crossing from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay. Options exist for a challenging mountain bike crossing with some particularly demanding sages in the Lake District, but also to take advantage of the minor road network and by-pass some of the more difficult off-road stages. The 210 mile Mountain Biking route, as described by Tim Woodcock, typically takes 7 days to complete, although this is completely open ended - dependent on ability and personal preference.

    Bee
Dorling Kindersley Bee, common name for a winged, flower-feeding insect with branched body hairs. Characteristics
Bees are dependent on pollen as a protein source and on flower nectar or oils as an energy source. Adult females collect pollen primarily to feed their larvae. The pollen they inevitably lose in going from flower to flower is important to plants because some pollen lands on the pistils (reproductive structures) of other flowers of the same species, resulting in cross-pollination (see Pollination). Bees are, in fact, the most important pollinating insects, and their interdependence with plants makes them an excellent example of the type of symbiosis known as mutualism, an association between unlike organisms that is beneficial to both parties. Most bees have specialized branched or feathery body hairs that help in the collection of pollen. Female bees, like many other hymenopterans, have a defensive sting. Some bees produce honey from flower nectar. Honey bees and stingless bees commonly hoard large quantities of honey-a characteristic that is exploited by beekeepers, who harvest the honey for human consumption (see Beekeeping). click to enlarge Photo by:
Larry Crowhurst/Oxford Scientific Films There are about 20,000 species of bees worldwide. Some species may not yet have been discovered, and many are either not named or have not been well studied. Bees are found throughout the world except at the highest altitudes, in polar regions, and on some small oceanic islands. The greatest diversity of bee species is found in warm, arid or semiarid areas, especially in the American Southwest and Mexico. Bees range in size from tiny species only 2 mm (0.08 in) in length to rather large insects up to 4 cm (1.6 in) long. Many bees are black or gray, but others are bright yellow, red, or metallic green or blue.
