    Encouraging Native Bees
    Abstract
This publication discusses using solitary or native bees as pollinators. Some of the larger groups of bees are discussed, including alkali bees, leafcutter bees, alfalfa leafcutter bees, bumblebees, sweat bees, squash bees, digger bees, orchard mason bees, shaggy fuzzyfoot bees, and hornfaced bees. Information is also presented on how to attract and conserve populations of wild bees for pollination purposes. There is also a list of suppliers of native bees and bee equipment. Go To Top
    Introduction
There are more than 3500 species of solitary bees in North America. Also called pollen bees or native bees, these efficient pollinators often do the lion's share of pollinating crops. Pollen bees have a number of advantages over honeybees as pollinators

CARPENTER BEES
by Mike Potter, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
USDA Cooperative Extension In the late-spring and early summer, homeowners often notice large, black bees hovering around the outside of their homes. These are probably carpenter bees searching for mates and favorable sites to construct their nests. Male carpenter bees are quite aggressive, often hovering in front of people who are around the nests. The males are quite harmless, however, since they lack stingers. Female carpenter bees can inflict a painful sting but seldom will unless they are handled or molested. Carpenter bees resemble bumble bees, but the upper surface of their abdomen is bare and shiny black; bumble bees have a hairy abdomen with at least some yellow markings.

Entrance holes are perfectly round.
Nest tunnels are shown.
(University of Kentucky Entomology) Despite their similar appearance, the nesting habits of the two types of bees are quite different. Bumble bees usually nest in the ground whereas carpenter bees tunnel into wood to lay their eggs. Bare, unpainted or weathered softwoods are preferred, especially redwood, cedar, cypress and pine. Painted or pressure-treated wood is much less susceptible to attack. Common nesting sites include eaves, window trim, facia boards, siding, wooden shakes, decks and outdoor furniture.

Killer bees have killed an estimated 1,000 people in the Americas. Perhaps the most feared and sensational of all foreign imports is the Africanized honeybee, better known as the 'killer' bee
Brazilian scientists brought aggressive African bees to Brazil in 1956 in an effort to breed a better honeybee. Unfortunately, the experiment failed and some of the African bees escaped and bred with local species. The insects' offspring have gradually moved northward and killed an estimated 1,000 people
Discovered in Hidalgo, Texas , in 1990, the bees are now established in most of Texas Nevada New Mexico Arizona and Southern California . Scientists say that while the Africanized bees are no more venomous than regular North American honeybees, they become agitated much more easily and stay angry longer, sometimes repeatedly stinging their victims for an entire day. They have been known to attack animals or people a quarter of a mile from their hives.

STARTING AN OBSERVATION HIVE OF HONEY BEES
by Ric Bessin, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky College of Agriculture
Certainly the best method to learn about honey bees is through the use of a glass observation hive. It is equipped with glass on both sides so that the queen and all activities of the bees may be observed at all times. Honey bees are truly amazing creatures to watch, and an observation hive allows you to see day-to-day activities within the hive without disrupting or irritating the bees. With an observation hive you can:
  • Study honey bee colony structure and organization,
  • See different honey bee castes and their duties within the hive,
  • Follow the development of honey bee larvae,
  • Watch comb building, honey production and storage,
  • Observe their communication with the bee dance.
Observation hives are ideally suited for 4-H and science projects, class room studies, nature displays, or just as a leisure time activity at home.

The genus Apis In general when we say honey bees, normally we are referring specifically to the Western Hive bees ( Apis mellifera L). In a strict sense this is not correct, honey bees are actually a genus (Apis) and are consisted of several different species. In the following I will describe briefly the biology of other honey bees. Throughout the chapter, scientific name in Latin will be used to refer specifically to different species. A Latin name consists of two parts: the first (capitalized) refers to the genus and the 2 nd (not capitalized) refers to the species. In some cases when the reader knows the genus, it is shortened to one letter, for example, Apis mellifera , can be written as A. mellifera . Sometimes a subspecies (or race) is indicated, adding a third part to the latin name, for example, Apis mellifera ligustica. This article is about the insect. For other uses of bee or bees , see bee (disambiguation)
Bees Apoidea superfamily) are flying insects , closely related to wasps and ants . They are adapted for feeding on nectar, and play an important role in pollinating flowering plants , and are called pollinators . Bees have a long proboscis that they use in order to obtain the nectar from flowers . Bees have antennae made up of thirteen segments in males and twelve in females. They have two pairs of wings, the back pair being the smaller of the two. Bees are fuzzy and carry an electrostatic charge, thus aiding in the adherance of pollen . Bees periodically stop foraging and groom themselves to pack the pollen into specialized pollen baskets which are on the legs of honeybees and some other species , and on the ventral abdomen on other species. Some of this pollen is carried from flower to flower, but the bulk of it is carried back to the nest to feed brood. The apex of the female abdomens are modified into a stinger.
