Dances With Bees
Anatomy of a Hive Amazing Bee Facts How this Film Was Made
Welcome to the companion Web site to the NOVA program "Tales from the Hive," originally broadcast on Tuesday, January 4, 2000. In this NOVA program, our cinematographer literally filmed inside a hive and followed bees in flight to capture closeups of honeybee behavior. Here's what you'll find online:
  • Anatomy of a Hive
A hive is more than just a buzz of activity. The social organization rivals that in the best-run corporations, with each bee and each cell possessing a rigidly specific function. Have a look at the physical, behavioral, and social infrastructure inside a bees' nest.
  • The Buzz About Bees
Did you know that on average it takes the nectar from 10 million flowers to make one liter of honey? That a worker bee can carry half her weight in nectar and pollen and still fly? Beguile yourself with these and other fascinating facts about bees.
  • Dances With Bees (Hot Science)
As viewers witnessed in "Tales From the Hive," individual honeybees will perform a specialized, wing-fluttering dance to inform other bees of the distance, direction, and richness of a new source of nectar. In this interactive feature, try your hand at successfully interpreting such a bee ballet.
  • The Making Of
How did they get closeups of bees in flight? Of a queen mating on the wing? Of the inside of a brood cell? In this engaging interview, enhanced by production stills, filmmaker Wolfgang Thaler reveals the tricks he used to secure the film's eye-popping cinematography.

http://gears.tucson.ars.ag.gov/ic/bees/bees.html
Just what are bees, anyway?
Bzzzzzzzz...............
A big black and yellow very hairy insect buzzes rapidly from flower to flower in the garden. That was a bumblebee busily gathering up sweet nectar and dustlike pollen grains from snap dragon, pea and other blossoms on sunny days. But how do scientists who study insects actually recognize a bee from, let's say, a yellow jacket wasp hovering over your ham sandwich on a family outing? Most bees lead solitary lives. Once mated, the females spend the rest of their lives in meadows and gardens collecting sweet nectar and the protein-rich pollen from many types of flowers. Also, most bees either nest by digging burrows in the ground or in hollow stems and twigs in dead tree branches. Very few bees lead social lives as sterile workers in a true colony like the bumblebees or honey bees.
Why Are Bees So Important?
Now let's take a look at a few different types of bees and see where they live. In this first photograph we see a type of solitary bee known as a digger bee, since it digs its own underground burrows in the soil. These are male bees from Costa Rica huddled together sleeping on a twig. In this photograph, we see a giant black carpenter bee within the old fruiting stalk of a Century plant in Arizona. Note the two cell partitions made of chewed wood fibers.

Select one of the thumbnail photographs of ants, bees and wasps below to access the descriptive record for this insect. Members of the Order Hymenoptera are charcterized by two pairs of membranous wings, clubbed antennae and chewing mouthparts. A good number possess a contricted "waist" between their thorax and abdomen. Ants, bees and wasps have evolved societal cooperation and are some of the finest natural architects, making extensive use of hexagonal forms.

Wee Bees was founded in 1991 to fill a huge void in the cloth diapering market. At the time we had just had our third son, and could not find any decent cloth diapers or diaper covers in the stores. We started by selling just a couple of products, and found the need to be greater than we expected. During our intensive diapering days, when we had 3 babies in cloth diapers at once, we gained a lot of experience and tried a lot of different products. Most of the products we tried were quite awful, but a few shone as wonderfully simple, easy and affordable. We have found a collection of products we believe to be superior to others that are available on the market today. We have made a conscious decision not to sell any products that we would not use ourselves. Over the years, the cloth diapering industry has seen many newcomers, but truthfully, most of the new products seem to lack the functionality and simplicity that we have found to be essential. What we want to offer our customers are products that will stand the test of time, not newfangled, fancy or cute things that will end up in a bin for the Goodwill or being pawned off on an auction site in a few months! If cloth diapering is to be affordable, which it should be, then trying a bunch of products that end up to be inferior should be avoided at all costs! We have done the sampling for you!

The BEES ( B uilding for E nvironmental and E conomic S ustainability) software brings to your fingertips a powerful technique for selecting cost-effective, environmentally-preferable building products. Developed by the NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) Building and Fire Research Laboratory with support from the U.S. EPA Environmentally Preferable Purchasing Program , the tool is based on consensus standards and designed to be practical, flexible, and transparent. Version 3.0 of the Windows-based decision support software, aimed at designers, builders, and product manufacturers, includes actual environmental and economic performance data for nearly 200 building products. In support of the 2002 Farm Security and Rural Investment Act (P.L. 107-171), BEES has been adapted for application to biobased products. For more information about this program, go to BEES for USDA BEES measures the environmental performance of building products by using the life-cycle assessment approach specified in ISO 14000 standards. All stages in the life of a product are analyzed: raw material acquisition, manufacture, transportation, installation, use, and recycling and waste management. Economic performance is measured using the ASTM standard life-cycle cost method, which covers the costs of initial investment, replacement, operation, maintenance and repair, and disposal. Environmental and economic performance are combined into an overall performance measure using the ASTM standard for Multi-Attribute Decision Analysis. For the entire BEES analysis, building products are defined and classified according to the ASTM standard classification for building elements known as UNIFORMAT II.

Apiidae

Bees belong to the third largest insect order which also includes wasps and ants. Together, these creatures pollinate crops, turn over the soil more effectively than earthworms, and, in the case of the bee, furnish food in the form of honey. Even more importantly, some members of this order prey on other insects the single most important factor in keeping the earth's insect population in check.
The bee's eyes, like those of other insects, differ greatly from human eyes. They consist of a pair of compound eyes made up of numerous six-sided facets (28,000 in some dragonflies, 4,000 in house flies) plus three simple eyes. Despite this, their vision is believed to be sharp only for a distance of about 1 m. Bees, however, are capable of seeing ultraviolet light, which is invisible to humans. The bee is capable of navigating, even on a cloudy day, by cloud-penetrating ultraviolet light. Honey bees also use the sun as a reference point to communicate to other bees the angle of flight to be followed to arrive at newly discovered nectar-bearing flowers.
