Colorado's Wildlife Company Fall 1994 Updated for 2001
Living With Bears
Since the days when Daniel Boone "kilt a bar" and carved his triumph on a tree, humans moving into bear habitat has meant conflicts between the two species. Bears used to be feared as ferocious wild animals, and despised as killers of live stock. Not until Yogi and Boo Boo came along did we begin to soften our image of wild bears. That change coincided with an increasingly urban population, one which has a minuscule chance of ever encountering a bear in the wild. Yet ironically, bear-human conflicts are increasing in Colorado as the expanding human population also moves into desirable mountain areas, and into bear habitat. Farmers and ranchers traditionally regarded bears as pests to be destroyed by any means. Wildlife management reflected that attitude for years until 1935, when Colorado declared the black bear a game animal and afforded it protection under state hunting regulations. Over succeeding decades Colorado's human population changed. From 1950 to 1990 Colorado's urban population more than tripled. By 1990 only 17.6% of the state population of 3,294,394 lived in the country. As city-dwellers outnumbered rural populations, Coloradoans adopted an increasingly humanistic attitude towards bears. Today fewer people are raised with a hunting tradition; there is rising interest in wildlife conservation and animal welfare among the general public, and some segments of the population oppose hunting outright. Reflecting these changing attitudes, in 1992 Coloradoans approved Amendment 10, banning the spring bear hunt and outlawing the use of dogs and

Review by Betsy Fraser. excerpt:
Through his work Dan Gurevich would bring the very spirit of the polar bear to millions. Dan Gurevich is a photographer. He saw his first polar bear in 1969 while traveling with the US tanker Manhattan on its voyage through the Northwest Passage. He has since made over 50 treks to the Arctic, solely because of his endless fascination with the polar bear, the largest land-based meat eater. This videorecording shows the polar bear's life cycle and habits while illustrating the tourist attractions that they have become. The video discusses Dan Gurevich, a crusader who fought for the fate of the polar bear up until he was diagnosed with cancer. Unfortunately, Gurevich's illness is one battle that he will not win, leaving his fate much more certain than that of the polar bear. This video would be good for students interested in polar bears and serve as a demonstration of the good that can happen when people fight for the future of an animal population. Today, a polar bear hide is worth only a third of what it was in 1976, and the people of Churchill, Manitoba, "show off their bears rather than kill them."

Adirondack Black Bears
From the SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry
Black bears inhabit the extensive forest lands of northern New York, particularly those within the Adirondack Park. The Adirondack region is "home" to a healthy population of nearly 4,000 black bears. Until the arrival of a few moose in recent years, black bears were the largest New York mammal, with some adult males weighing in excess of 600 pounds. Bears have been described as "big, black eating machines" because foraging for food is a near constant activity except in winter. Adequate food resources are important for growth, reproduction, and building fat reserves for winter survival in their den. Food Habits Adirondack black bears eat a wide variety of foods. Approximately 90 percent of their diet is plant material consisting of not less than 30 different plant species. The remainder is primarily insects, but bears also will scavenge carcasses of larger animals, and, if the opportunity arises, prey upon live white-tailed deer fawns, small woodland mammals, and beaver.

Press Release
The Birth of Ballad of the Wild Bear (June 14, 2004 - Anchorage) Every book, fiction or non-fiction, has a story behind it. The story behind Ballad of the Wild Bear , a children's book coming out this summer, is unquestionably Alaska's. In the summer of 2001, garbage cans in the streets, dog food in the yard and bird feeders in the trees drew grizzly and black bears into Talkeetna. As the bears became accustomed to finding food in and around the town, many unwelcome encounters with people resulted. That year, six bears had to be shot. Locals came together to find a solution. They founded the Bear Necessities Coalition, a grassroots effort to teach people how even small changes in their behavior can make a big difference. Based on an old folk song, members Pat Chamberlin-Calamar and Sandy Kogl wrote the book Ballad of the Wild Bear , which follows the trail of two bears into town and shows how specific human behaviors affect their fate. The Coalition brought it to the Alaska Natural History Association in late 2002, which picked it up for publication enthusiastically. "This is a children's book that has the potential to really stand out from the deluge of books published every year," Jill Brubaker, managing editor, said after seeing the first manuscript. That potential was developed into a 32-page book with a detailed afterword on bears and bear behavior approved by a team of bear specialists. Colorful illustrations by Libby Hatton of Anchorage and a music CD of the ballad complement the text.

    Introduction
The grizzly is a symbol of the American wilderness. Lewis and Clark found a healthy grizzly population when they explored Idaho's Bitterroot Mountains in the early 19th century. As the nation expanded westward, grizzly numbers plummeted due to unchecked hunting and trapping. The grizzly is now "threatened" in the lower 48 states. Photos:
During winter, a bear may lose from 15 to 27 percent of its pre-denning body weight.
Latin Name: Ursus arctos Family Name: Ursidae (Bear) Related Species:
Brown bears and grizzly bears are the same species. In North America, bears that live in interior areas are commonly called grizzlies, whereas those in coastal areas are called brown bears. Coastal bears are typically larger and darker, due to salmon and rich coastal foods. The grizzly got its name because of its grizzled, silvertipped coat. Black bears ( Ursus americanus ) are a forest-dwelling species that, in part of its range, overlaps with grizzly bears. Typically smaller with shorter front claws and without a shoulder hump, black bears may be black, brown, cinnamon, or even pure white (the white form is in a coastal area of British Columbia). Estimated Population: There are about 1,200 grizzlies in the lower 48 states, roughly 31,700 in Alaska, and approximately 25,000 in Canada.

Bottom trawling must be immediately shut down in at least 12 areas of the coast if we are to protect important deep sea corals and sponges, claims Living Oceans Society in a report released July 13 2005 Deep sea corals and sponges are critical to the health of the ocean because they provide habitat for many commercially and ecologically important species. Deep sea corals live to be over 100 years old, and form tall branching structures like underwater trees. They are known to provide habitat for rockfish, atka mackerel, juvenile Pacific halibut, rock sole, juvenile red king crab, and several species of shrimp. B.C.'s globally unique Hexactinellid sponges form large reefs that date back to the last ice age and grow as tall as 19 metres. These sponges provide habitat for a variety of species including rockfish, spider and King crab, shrimp, prawns, sea stars, and urchins. The report is available at www.livingoceans.org/media/
