Help Reach Goal Building Update New Black Bear Courses are being offered by the Wildlife Research Institute in spring and summer 2005. Work with Lynn Rogers studying bears as seen on the Animal Planet documentary "The Man Who Walks With Bears." Safely learn vocalizations, body language, behavior, and ecology directly from wild bears in their wild habitat near Ely, MN. Click on Black Bear Course for details. Most of the courses are full for 2005 (except the bear-moose courses in June), so we are starting a list of people interested for 2006.
Working with volunteer biologist Lynn Rogers , Ph.D., for over 30 years, the Wildlife Research Institute (WRI) is conducting the longest and most detailed black bear study and the largest educational outreach program ever done for black bears. Our goal is a better understanding of bear behavior to help people coexist with bears in an increasingly urban environment. We work directly with government agencies to improve bear management, and we provide our findings to tens of millions of people each year through

Of Bears and Beakers
Researchers studying hibernating bears have found that instead of disposing of their metabolic waste, bears recycle it. For example, denning bears normally turn potentially toxic nitrogen compounds into protein. Bears that cannot do this die from urenia, a condition in which nitrogenous wastes normally excreted by the kidneys remain in the blood. Once the mechanism by which bears are able to do this can be isolated it may have some very significant implications with regards to treatment of kidney failure in humans. Data from studies on bears has already been instrumental in defining a diet program to reduce the frequency of dialysis for anephric humans awaiting kidney transplantation. This program has also been successful for people on hemodialysis who wish to dialyze less often. Researchers believe that there is a hormone produced by part of a bear's brain which controls temperature as well as appetite. If this is true and the hormone can be isolated then potentially it could be administered to patients with kidney problems, obesity or anorexia nervosa. If the bear's hibernation induction trigger can be isolated, it could be used to slow metabolism and reduce head swelling in severe trauma cases, slow and cool the body during surgery, extend the viability of organs waiting to be transplanted and prevent fibrillation (wild, uncontrolled contractions of the heart) in heart surgery as it appears to in hibernating bears.

In addressing and resolving recent bear issues, it is important to examine each issue separately. Such issues include; spring bear hunt (pest control), indiscriminate capture using snare traps, and inappropriate assignment policy of the wildlife protection agents.
1.Spring Bear Hunt
According to ' Wildlife Protection and Hunting law ', spring bear hunt is defined as a measure of preventive pest control and is carried out routinely, especially in areas of heavy snow as it is easy to find black bears when there is still lots of snow left or footprints of bears on the snow Whether this practice is done from necessity and with appropriate measures is, however, rather questionable.
For one thing, bears are hunted indiscriminately and well within their habitat areas. Also, when a mother bear is killed during the hibernation period, orphaned cubs cannot survive on their own and eventually die as well.
In heavy snow areas on the Japan Sea side, spring bear hunt is permitted in April and May, pest control from June through November 15, and sport hunting also from June through February 15, which puts almost ceaseless hunting pressure on bears. One of the reasons of this is suspected to be to obtain gall bladders, which collect a lot of money.

Black Bears in New Jersey involved in 4 attacks
March 26, 1999
We've all heard of the recent incident involving the tiger in Jackson that got loose and met it's untimely death. That story stuck a note with many of you who wrote to us and let us know your feelings on the subject. A few weeks after this incident, from out the blue, I was driving on Rt. 287 and heard a report on 101.5 that a wild bear had attacked a Llama in Morris County and had to be tranquilized. I was curious what happened to the bear after that, so I called the New Jersey Division of Fish, Game and Wildlife and inquired about its plight. I spoke to Bob Erikson, a knowledgeable biologist who deals directly with this problem and on the afternoon of March 25th at 2:00PM, he took a few moments to speak with me about Black bears in New Jersey. He told me he had a bear in custody as we spoke and that there had been 4 incidents of bears attacking livestock in Blairstown and in Lafayette in Sussex County. The bears involved killed a Llama, 4 goats and 11 chickens. As I spoke to Bob, he was on his way out to release a bear. I asked him to tell me what would happen to it. Their policy is to destroy any wild bear that is caught killing an animal on sight. If the bear is not seen killing, (like the one they had in custody) they will trap it and give it one chance in case it is not a livestock killer. The bear is tagged and given a radio collar to follow its movements. It is moved from its base, 20-30 miles away and then released. They are sprayed with strong pepper spray, (which Bob related is most unpleasant for them and the handlers to inhale) and exploding shots are used to scare the bear away from them as it's released to a new habitat. These are humane efforts to give the bear a chance. Bob said bears had good memories, and these efforts are to keep it away from where it experienced trouble.

RSS A cougar pounced out of a tree and mauled a 4-year-old girl this past week. This was on Vancouver Island near the Kaouk River on the coast, according to news reports. The girl's mother kept whacking at the mountain lion with a cooler until it fled. The little girl suffered head injuries. Our relation with the predators of the Northwest is complicated and not nearly as enchanted as it once was. Bear sightings are common on the Eastside, and the state has a new Web site to track cougar sightings, although a lot of ordinary cats and dogs are initially confused for the large cats. Without much doubt, we are moving toward an event that is more than just the disappearance of Fido when a cougar or coyote visits the cul de sacs. A child's mauling, as serious as the one a few years ago in Eastern Washington, or the death of a morning jogger, could switch the entire debate. What is that debate? So far, it has been largely on the side of the animals. The Seattle overhang shadowing Eastern King County embraces the idea that sprawl, or human density, is extending into the animals' territories so the blame belongs to us.

Among the Bears: Raising Orphan Cubs in the Wild
"With growing black bear populations and an ever-increasing sprawl of human development, conflicts are inevitable and increasing. The question is: will we learn to live with this magnificent animal?" (p. 226) So one day last summer I'm riding my bike up in the Siskiyou Mountains and as I come around a corner there is a black bear in the middle of the road. I don't know who was more surprised, but I do know who was more scared since s/he left the road immediately. My wife has warned me on excursions since then to beware of the bears, but since that event, half the reason I now continue to go up there is in hopes of seeing another one. Well, this book did nothing to discourage me from such encounters, and I'm hoping my wife reads it too. She will certainly enjoy reading it, and Among the Bears will teach her more than a thing or two about these creatures. Among the Bears is quite similar to Next of Kin in many ways. It is well written, entertaining, informative, exciting, sad, and most of all: it provides an entirely new and "insider's" perspective to a species that you may think you know something about, but really don't, before undertaking its contents. Benjamin Kilham is the Jane Goodall of the bear kingdom.

http://www.grizzlydiscoveryctr.com/wildbearinfochanges.html
The grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilus ) is a subspecies of brown bear ( Ursus arctos ). The healthiest, stable populations of grizzlies live in Canada and Alaska. In the lower forty-eight states, approximately 1200 grizzlies live in the wild. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and Glacier National Park are the homes to the majority of those bears. Smaller populations live in isolated areas of Wyoming, Idaho, Montana and Washington. Grizzlies in the lower 48 states are currently protected under the Endangered Species Act as a threatened species. The issue to delist the grizzly is a very controversial subject. The most critical aspect to protect this species is to preserve enough undisturbed wilderness for them to survive.
Adult male grizzlies typically need 250 square miles of habitat, called a home range, to live peacefully without interfering with humans, although the size is entirely food dependent. Where food is abundant, bears may have very small ranges. Females will have significantly smaller home ranges than males. Both male and female home ranges overlap. They live in temperate climates primarily, and are considered more of an open-country bear as opposed to a forest-dwelling creature.
Grizzlies are highly adaptable animals and are considered to be opportunistic eaters and omnivorous by nature. They will eat almost anything available including grasses, roots, berries, flowers, nuts, insects, rodents, fish, elk, deer, moose, antelope, carrion, and occasionally human foods that may attract them. They use their 42 teeth to eat this wide variety of foods. The food source is what determines the overall health of the bear, survival of young, hibernation, density of bears, lifespan, and size. Grizzlies living in coastal areas tend to eat more fish in their diet, while an inland grizzly consumes more vegetation. As with many different terrestrial mammals, grizzlies eat whatever is most abundant as the seasons change.
