Bears' Wild Card Creatures taken to wild, hopefully ending legacy of campsite raids. by Diana Marcum
The Fresno Bee - January 12, 2002
YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK They don't give them names anymore. So two unnamed young bears were released Friday to live wild, hopefully ending the three-generation legacy of a human-aggressive bear family and ushering in a new era of bear management in Yosemite National Park. The bears' mother, Eenie, was killed by park officials last summer after she repeatedly raided campsites and rushed humans. She was treed with her two cubs, came down and was "darted" by authorities. Then biologists lured down the cubs by placing the mother at the foot of the tree. If the family's fate and bear management philosophies had held, the cubs also would have been killed. Eenie's mother, Swatter, an aggressive bear who left bites and claw marks on four people, was destroyed in 1993. Her three cubs Eenie, Meenie and Miney were relocated to the park's backcountry. Meenie's fate is unknown. Miney, whose mother taught her not to fear humans, became a campsite raider with two cubs. Five years ago she and both cubs were killed when they were judged a threat to park visitors.

in the Wild Printed February, 1996
Seeing a bear can be one of the most memorable experiences of a wilderness vacation, but it is our responsibility to respect the bear in its home. This means we must not force bears to leave their habitat, teach them to eat human foods, or place bears in situations where people or bears could get hurt. Preparation and education are essential to ensure our encounters with bears in the wild are positive and free from conflict. Bears are everywhere. We see them on the side of the highway, on logging roads, on the way to a campsite, near towns, or in the bush when hiking or working. Bears will usually hide from people, but remember: just because you don't see a bear, it doesn't mean they aren't around. British Columbia has about one-quarter of all black bears in Canada, and half of all grizzly bears. Both species are found throughout the province, with very few exceptions. There are no grizzly bears on Vancouver Island or on the Queen Charlottes, for instance, and there are few or no grizzlies in the heavily-settled Lower Mainland or the dry, southern areas of the province.

Factoid:
In Alaska, brown bears include the grizzly, the coastal brown bear, and Kodiak brown bears. They're all related, but the main differences are geographical range and diet. The brown bear is larger, and is found mainly in the coastal areas of Alaska where salmon is abundant, while the grizzly is found mainly within the interior areas of Alaska. The Kodiak brown is a distinct subspecies, considered the largest bear in the world.
Status: Threatened
Population: There are approximately 3,000 Kodiak bears in Alaska's Kodiak Archipelago. Brown bears and grizzlies in Alaska number an estimated 35,000-45,000. Threats: Threats to the survival of the brown bear include habitat destruction caused by logging, mining and human development and illegal poaching (illegal killings).
Survival: Brown bears can live up to 30 years in the wild.

Panda Information Coloring Printout Labeled Coloring Printout Unlabeled ... on the Web Pandas Giant pandas are black-and-white Chinese bears that are on the verge of extinction. These large, cuddly-looking mammals have a big head, a heavy body, rounded ears, and a short tail. The Chinese people call the panda "Da xiong mao," which means "giant bear cat" in Chinese. The panda is a symbol of peace in China. This bear is quite different from other bears. It has unusual cat-like eyes, and its front paws have an opposable "thumb." Female pandas are called sows, males are called boars, and the young are called cubs. EYES Most bears' eyes have round pupils. The exception is the giant panda, whose pupils are vertical slits, like cats' eyes. These unusual eyes inspired the Chinese to call the panda the "giant cat bear."

MALAYAN SUN BEAR
Remaining Population: Unknown Range: Southeast Asia
The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous. Species Description and Natural History Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.

Games Which Bear? G ETTING F OOD The brown bear, black bear, and giant panda bear are primarily herbavores. The polar bear, on the other hand, is mostly a meat eater. The giant panda relys too much on one source of food, the bamboo. This has caused them great harm and has led them to near extinction. The brown bear and black bear will eat almost anything. From berries, nuts, and acorns to carrion, fish, and small mammals, they will eat it. The polar bear's favorite meal is the seal. Senses
The hearing and smell of bears are excellent. Smell is used in identification of others and in searching for food. Their sight is average compared to other animal species. R EPRODUCTION AND H IBERNATION Reproduction Reproduction among bears takes place in a similar manner to that of canines. During the three weeks in which the female is in estrus, she will mate with more than one male. Gestation generally takes about 220 days and for most the cubs are born while the mother is in hibernation. Then the mother is ready to come out of the den, so are the cubs. Hibernation Not all bears hibernate. Black bears and brown bears do, but the only polar bear that will hibernate is a pregnate female. Before hibernation as much food is consumed as possible. When the bear begins to be lathargic, they will enter an area sheltered from the weather. Hibernation make take place for 4 to 7 months; females hibernate longer than males. During the hibernation period no waste is passed, but is recycled. Body functions decrease in half, body temperature drops more than 10 degrees, and the bear's heat beat drops from 40-70 beats per minute to about 8-12 beats per minute.

It is flat land with slight ridges of hardwood and pine thickets surrounded by vast tracts of cypress swamps. Also, it contains many fields of peanuts, which whitetail deer, black bear and other game find to be their select choice of food. The high protein found in peanuts help to grow some of the biggest racks available in the state of NC. The whitetail deer leave the protection of the bottom lands to graze on peanuts and grain provided by us. Hunting Stands: we have 250 stands located at the Bertie County Camp. Natural History Bears Food Storage Wildlife Safety Natural History The varied topography of Yosemite's wilderness hosts about 1,460 species of plants in over 40 recognized plant communities. These, in turn, are home to numerous invertebrate and vertebrate species, including 78 species of mammals, 247 of birds, 17 of amphibians, 22 of reptiles, 11 of fish, and numerous invertebrates. Wilderness users must understand they are visitors to the homes of these residents and behave in ways that do not upset or destroy their balance of life. Consequences of improper human behavior to the inhabitants or their habitat can be extremely destructive if not deadly. Campfires above 9600', for instance, eliminates necessary habitat and nesting sites. Feeding wildlife, either intentionally or not, encourages unnatural and potentially dangerous behavior and disrupts normal ecological processes. The information in this section highlights bears and proper food storage both in the wilderness and at the trailhead. Wilderness users must take similar care in everything they do in the backcountry to minimize their impact on the natural systems there. Users should also be aware of potential threats to themselves and learn more about mountain lions, poison oak, lyme disease, rattlesnakes or other hazards. http://www.nps.gov/yose/wilderness/bears.htm
