The sun bear is the world's smallest bear, and unlike other bears it spends a good majority of its time living in the trees and eating a mainly vegetarian diet. Its name is derived from the beautiful golden patch it sports on its chest. Unfortunately, in the past few decades these shy and elusive bears have become endangered; it is estimated that fewer than 1,000 individuals remain throughout their native territory of Southeast Asia. The sun bear is threatened by habitat destruction due to agricultural demands, capture of babies for the pet trade, and victimization by poachers who use the meat for food and the other parts, such as paws and gallbladders, for traditional medicines.
Sunbears Under Fire
Woodland Park Zoo has been involved in two projects working to save this endangered bear. The first involved bringing ten sun bears to zoos in the United States for study and captive breeding. The killing of sun bears by poachers has resulted in many orphaned cubs, and these cubs are subsequently sold into the pet trade. When these pets are confiscated by the government, they are taken to the rehabilitation centers at Sepilok and Sarawak, where workers attempt to reintroduce them into the wild. Unfortunately, in many cases this is impossible, as the cubs grew up as pets and cannot function in the wild. The rehabilitation centers are overrun with bears, and due to limited staff they cannot receive proper treatment.

MALAYAN SUN BEAR
Remaining Population: Unknown Range: Southeast Asia
The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous. Species Description and Natural History Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.

Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

Ape Man The sun bear is a rather small member of the bear family which makes its home in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. It is covered with a black coat made of sleek, short hairs. It has a white or yellowish patch on its chest shaped like a half-moon. It has a muzzle which is both yellower and shorter than that of a black bear. Sometimes the light color extends up over the eyes. The long, pointed claws are curved with hairless soles, likely as an adaptive measure to help in climbing trees. The ears of the sun bear are smaller and rounder than those of other bears. The teeth of the sun bear are flatter than those of other bears and the canines are long enough to protrude between the lips. The omnivorous sun bear lives on a diet consisting mostly of termites, birds, small mammals, and even bits of oil palms, and other commercial crops. Sun bears are the smallest of all the bears. The adults only weigh up to 145 pounds, and measure at the longest 60 inches. This bear can be found in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, Bangledesh, and many other countries in the Southeastern portions of Asia. However, poaching and deforestration have been slowly eroding the available population and habitat.

What makes this zoo's sun bear page a little more interesting than most is that it has a good picture gallery, showing the zoo's sun bears taking part in their enrichment program. In addition to the gallery, though, there are also the staple stats found on other pages, such as physical characteristics, behaviour, and diet. And there's even a bio on Ken and Jun, the two bears at the zoo.

Jun PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The Malayan sun bear is the smallest member of the bear family. It is also the one with the shortest and sleekest coat - perhaps an adaptation to a lowland equatorial climate. These animals grow to approximately four and a half feet in length and have a tiny, two-inch tail. Their average weight is less than 100 pounds. The short-haired, deep black or brown-black fur is interrupted on the chest by a pale orange-yellow horseshoe-shaped marking. In folklore, this yellow crescent is said to represent the rising sun and is apparently the origin of the name sun bear. They have a long narrow tongue which can be extended quite far. The long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet and the large, inward-oriented feet are most reminiscent of the sloth bear. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, a useful ability for a species which spends a lot of time climbing trees to get fruit. DISTRIBUTION and HABITAT: Although they inhabit both lowlands and highlands, the Sun bears are primarily forest dwellers. They rest and feed in trees in tropical to subtropical regions of Southeast Asia - Borneo, Sumatra, Malay Peninsula, Kampuchea, Vietnam, Laos, Burma, and possibly southern China.

Bears of the World Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit www.redlist.org ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

Cloud Speak ... Z in a Bubble Thursday evening, Pat and I sat in my living room, talking about our upcoming trip to Germany, prophecy, and the Native American theme that runs through Ellie's World this week. I was recounting a story about an experience I had earlier in the day, while reading a female client, who asked me about 'Sarah and Alexander'. The image of an elephant appeared before me which I often associate with myself - Ellie. Suddenly the room began to shake. Feeling the tremors, my client asked if we were having an earthquake. I was not alarmed - understanding that on some level a message about my work were being acknowedged .... by Zeus, perhaps? (laugh). Five minutes later all became calm. No one in my building reported anything unusual during the rest of the day, so as with all of the anomalies in my apartment, I chalked it up to experience. As Pat and I sat and talked, my attention was suddenly riveted to the bridge just outside. There before us was a strange cloud formation over the Verrazano Bridge.
