Gone Fishin'
The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.

Bears
Bear: wav au
Polar Bear: wav au Bears are large carnivorous mammals closely related to pandas, raccoons, and dogs. They are distinguished from other carnivore families by having heavy bodies, a short tail and short, rounded ears, plantigrade feet (both heel and sole touching the ground, like in humans), and a hind foot with five toes. They also do not have the teeth common in most carnivores; the crushing molars of bears are believed to be an adaptation for a plant diet. Although bears are classified as carnivores, the different species vary widely in their feeding habits. For example, the polar bear feeds almost only on seals and other animals, but may also graze on vegetation. The grizzly eats grasses, herbs, berries, and nuts as well as living or dead animals. Bears occupy many habitats, but human development has pushed them primarily into mountain forest , and arctic wildernesses. They live in South America, North America, Asia, Europe, and in the Arctic near the North Pole.

It's that they beat the Lions up. Disruptive Scott becoming consistent force up front It will be tough to label anything coming from Bears defensive tackle Ian Scott as a surprise much longer. The fourth-round draft pick in 2003 went from the verge of not making the roster last season to the starting lineup, and his improvement isn't slowing down. Scott was disruptive from the start of the Bears' 28-6 victory over the Lions on Sunday, intercepting Joey Harrington on the third play from scrimmage after batting down a pass. The ball bounced off Lions center Dominic Raiola and left guard Rick DeMulling and back into Scott's hands, setting up the Bears' first touchdown.

Bears' D-line boasts big-time look
August 23, 2005 BY BRAD BIGGS Staff Reporter As he was heading to the team bus late Saturday in Indianapolis, Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera beamed about the performance of his line. "It's one of the best efforts I've seen from them,'' Rivera said. "They're starting to see that's how we need them to fight.'' Usually unflappable Peyton Manning had been chased all over the RCA Dome turf for a little more than a quarter. If he did not have the fastest release since Dan Marino, he would have been battered. Indianapolis' backup quarterback, Jim Sorgi, had to run for his life and was sacked three times. It was evidence that the gap-shooting line Lovie Smith installed has come together. But that doesn't mean the meeting with line coach Don Johnson went well when players returned to work at Halas Hall on Monday morning. "We had a great time at the meeting today,'' Johnson said, tongue firmly planted in cheek. "Our philosophy is it's never quite as bad as you think and it's never as good as you think, so don't think. We'll show it to you on tape.''

Welcome to Free The Bears Fund Inc TRAGEDY FOR THE FUND
Simon Hutton, 39, only son of Mary (founder of Free The Bears Fund) and Ron Hutton, was fatally injured when knocked down by a car in the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh on 22nd June 2005. Please read more here The Free The Bears Fund Inc mission is “To protect, preserve and enrich the lives of bears throughout the world”.
We do this by raising money through donations, charity auctions, merchandising, and bear sponsorship. It is worth noting that the ABSOLUTE majority of all funds raised goes directly to fund our projects. OUR VISION:
TO UNLOCK THE CAGE OF DARKNESS
There is a bear in a small cage. Feel his confusion, sadness and despair.

There are people who live in a country with no welfare system, the only food, shelter and income that which they provide for themselves. These people too are in a cage: a cage constructed from poverty. Share their misery and hopelessness.
Mrs Mary Hutton, Founder of the Fund with Serey - an infant Sun Bear
There are people thousands of miles away who feel anger and despair when they think of captive bears, and the countries that exploit their wildlife. Counter productive feelings that slowly form into the bars of a cage, which holds both heart, and mind prisoner.

Sun Bear
The Sun bear is the smallest of all the bears. When we first saw the Sun bears, because of their small size, we thought they were bear cubs. Later we found out that these bears were full sized adult bears.
As you can see by the photo on the right, their claws are very long, thick and sharp. Their claws are used for digging and tearing into the nests of bees and termites. The Sun bear also eats fruit and small animals.
The Sun bear can be found in the lowland tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. They enjoy climbing trees and often times will sleep on the branches of the trees. The Malayan sun bear belongs to the family Ursidae, which includes eight bear species worldwide.1 Sun bears live on the Malay Peninsula, in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra, and possibly in southern China. There are also small, remnant populations in India and Bangladesh.
If you like this animal and find it particularly fascinating you can adopt it! Habitat
All elevations of dense tropical and subtropical forests Length and Shoulder Height
Adult length: 3.5-4.5 feet (1.1-1.4 m) Adult height: 28 inches (72 cm) Weight
Males 60-143 pounds (27-65 kg) Males are 10-20% heavier than females Life Span
Life span in the wild is unknown; up to 28 years in zoos Diet
In the wild: Sun bears eat predominantly fruit, honey, insects and their larvae, small rodents, lizards, birds, earthworms, green vegetation and roots. Sun bears also relish the growing tips of coconut palms grown on plantations. This kills the palms and leads to sun bears being shot by plantation owners. At the zoo: Omnivore biscuits, a variety of fruits, vegetables, insects and honey (ocassionally fish).
