When Stephen Fry was asked to travel to Peru to make a documentary tracing the origins of Paddington Bear, he was not overjoyed at the prospect. For someone used to room service, a reliable internet connection and enough power to keep a digital camera, an MP3 player and a sonic toothbrush fully charged at all times, the idea of finding himself in Peru, a country better known for its drug barons and earthquakes than its de luxe hotels and high speed internet providers, was more than a little daunting. Against his better judgement, he was soon sitting in the doctor's surgery being filled to the brim with immunising doses of hepatitis, yellow fever, typhoid and tetanus and winging his way to South America. A major part of the resulting film turned out to be the story of Yogi, a bear that had been captured by the people of a small village in the Andes and had lived in a tiny cage, barely big enough for him to turn around, for two years. This was the beginning of Stephen's obsession with Spectacled Bears and their destiny. Within a week or so of returning to the UK, Stephen and the film-makers had decided that another film should be made devoted to the plight of the Spectacled Bear and that a charitable foundation should be established for the purpose of rescuing distressed bears, purchasing land for their exclusive use and to pursue research into their numbers, their habitat, behaviour and future.

...awarded to our website! Bears of the World Fossil records and historical data indicate that at one time there may have been hundreds of bear species worldwide, on all continents except Antarctica and Australia. Today, eight bear species remain in North and South America, Europe, and Asia. All of the bears found at the Vince Shute Wildlife Sanctuary are American black bears ( Ursus americanus). Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. The status of each species is listed, according to the International Union for Conservation's (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species for the year 2000. For complete listings and criteria, please visit www.redlist.org ASIATIC BLACK BEAR ( Selenarctos thibetanus)
Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

About IUCN Our work Commissions Members ... Events Executive Summary - Status Survey and Conservation Action Plan: Bear This status survey and conservation action plan describes the status and conservation needs of the eight bear species of the world. These species currently live in more than 65 countries/autonomous regions in four continents. They are a diverse group of large mammals living in a variety of habitats from tropical rain forests to arctic ice. Bears are the umbrella species in most of the ecosystems they inhabit. The conservation of bears and their habitats will preserve the most biodiversity in these areas and focus management efforts on preserving watershed resources that also sustain human populations. Conservation efforts for bears in North America and Western Europe are much more intensive and coordinated than in Asia or Latin America where research and management are minimal or nonexistent. The exception to this in Asia is the intensive conservation of the giant panda in China. The greatest threats to bears exist in Asia, the Middle East, and parts of South America. (Table 1).

    The Spectacled Bear
The Spectacled Bear, or Tremarctos Ornatus, is an endangered species. This rare bear can only be found in a few
elusive spots in the world. Many endangered species all over the world don’t deserve the respect and care that they
need. That is why many endangered species often become extinct or remain on the endangered species list for the
remainder of their survival on Earth. Today, as more species become endangered, more people become involved in
their care. Many things are being done to save endangered species, including safe, poacher-free environments in
captivity, and wildlife preservations, to name a few. Only a handful of zoos and sanctuaries around the globe are
lucky enough to be able to try to breed and care for rare endangered species.
The Phoenix Zoo is an example of this. Right now, they have captive many endangered species, including the almost
extinct Mexican Wolf and Spectacled Bear. In their newest exhibit, called “The Forest of Uco,” the Phoenix Zoo has

And when he wanted help in highlighting his cause, Stephen, a long-time and very vocal Mac user, turned to his friends at Apple. They agreed to design and maintain a spectacular Web site, www.bear-rescue.tv , crammed with information about the bears, their environment and the making of the TV programme, and including activities for children. The lucky Apple employee who actually got to accompany Stephen Fry and the film crew on their Peruvian adventure was Mike Matson. Mike subsequently designed the Web site, using footage which he had taken himself during the trip. QuickTime , and the bear-rescue.tv site makes extensive use of this, allowing the visitor to listen to conversations between Stephen Fry and various crew members, listen to music from the programme and even enjoy a mini travelogue of the area. www.apple.com/uk/quicktime media skins

These large, heavy animals occur in a variety of habitats ranging from arctic ice floes to tropical rain forest. All species except the polar bear go through a period of deep sleep during winter. This sleep may last all winter but is not considered true hibernation. Although all bears are considered omnivores, that is eaters of both plant and animal matter, their diets range from the almost exclusively carnivorous  polar bear, to the enormously herbivorous panda. SPECTACLED BEAR Tremarctos ornatus Description: The spectacled bear is a small black bear with cream-colored facial markings around its eyes that give it its name. Females weigh about 150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. They have a total body length of 60 to 72 inches. Range: The spectacled bear is found in Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru.
Habitat: It lives in a variety of forested Andes mountain habitats, ranging in elevation from 500 to 14,000 feet. The spectacled bear is an excellent tree climber and forages in the trees. It is most often found in what is called the cloud forest, a lush, misty ecosystem of the Andes. The spectacled bear is thought to play a vital role in the forest by scattering seeds through its droppings, a function called seed dispersal. Diet: The favorite food of the spectacled bear is fruit and it will also eat varieties of bromeliads, rodents and insects. When feeding in fruit trees the spectacled bear will bend back many branches forming a "nest" that will serve as a feeding platform and a daytime refuge. When a spectacled bear strays into human farmland it is often shot on sight because it is considered a pest species for both the farmer's crops and livestock. Social Organization: Little is known about the behavior of this shy forest bear. It is believed that they are mostly nocturnal and spend the day time sleeping in self-made tree nests, large tree root cavities or on ground beds. At sites of abundant food, as with fruiting trees, several bears can be seen feeding in close proximity with very little interaction between them. Only mothers with young have been seen traveling together so it is assumed spectacled bears lead solitary lives.
