Bears
Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

Range: Western South America Habitat: Mountain forests to coastal scrublands Conservation Status Threatened Scientific Name: Tremarctos ornatus This clever bear often builds a platform of broken branches in a tree and stands on it to reach fruit. Not only does it feed in trees, but it builds nests in the branches for sleeping. Spectacled bears live in the high, humid forests of the Andes Mountains and in thorn forests along the South American coast. They eat fruit, cactus and other plants, and sometimes feed on small animals.

Spectacled bear Latin Names: Tremarctos Ornatus
Subfamily: Tremarctinae.
Tremarctos Ornatus F.G. Cuvier, 1825. OTHER NAMES:
Short-faced bear, Andean Bear, Ucumari CHARACTERISTICS:
The spectacled bear is small and dark, ranging in color from black to brown, and a few have a reddish tinge. It has distinctive circular or semicircular creamy white markings (spectacles) on the face around the eyes, reminiscent of spectacles. Lines and patches of white usually extend onto the throat and chest as well. The amount and pattern of the white markings can be quite variable. Spectacled bears get their name from the light colored rings around their eyes that make some of the bears look like they are wearing glasses. These shy bears are the only species that live in South America. Little is known about these rare bears because of a lack of research and the remoteness of the areas where they live. Because they live in warm climates, their fur is thinner than that of North American bear species. Spectacled bears have long claws that allow them to climb trees very well. They also have large, flat molars so they can chew very tough plants that are found in the rainforest such as palms, cacti, and orchid bulbs. SIZE:
There are few measurements available for this bear. Adult spectacled bears can weigh between 140 and 385 pounds (63-173 kg). However, the body length of adults is about 150 to 180 centimeters (60 to 72 inches) and males may be 30 to 40 percent larger than females. Males weigh 100 to 155 kilograms (220 t o 340 pounds) and females weigh 64 to 82 kilograms (140 to 180 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh from 300 to 360 grams (10 to 11 1/2 ounces). When standing on all fours, the average male measures about 30 inches (76 cm) tall at the shoulder and approximately 7.5 feet (228 cm) from nose to tail. Females are slightly smaller. At birth, cubs weigh from 10 to 11 ounces Longevity 25+ years. The spectacled bear is the 2nd largest mammal and the largest carnivore in South America

Wildlife Trade > FAQs Bear Trade What are the different species of bears?
Bears inhabit four continents: Europe, Asia, North and South America. Scientists recognize eight species of bears: the sun bear ( Helarctos malayanus ) of south Asia; the sloth bear ( Melursus ursinus ) from southeast Asia; the Asiatic black bear ( Ursus thibetanus ) from south, southeast and east Asia; the brown bear ( U. arctos ), from parts of Europe, central Asia, Russia, Japan and North America; the American black bear ( U. americanus ) from North America; the polar bear ( U. maritimus ) from northern Eurasia and northern North America; the giant panda ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca ), from the mountains of western China; and the spectacled bear ( Tremarctos ornatus ) from the Andean region of South America. Are bears in danger of extinction?
What is causing these dramatic declines?

Of the world's eight bear species, only giant pandas are not hunted specifically for their gallbladders. The panda is, however, severely threatened by habitat loss, poaching, human encroachment in panda reserves, and hunting for a select Asian curio market. Historically, the Asiatic black bear has been the most popular source of gallbladders for TCM, and poaching of these bears for their gallbladders has led to serious declines in Asiatic black bear populations. Today, poachers may be moving farther afield in search of gallbladders, hunting spectacled bears, American black and brown bears, and even polar bears. American black bears are as yet unaffected by the demand for their parts, with stable or even increasing populations almost throughout their range.

The spectacled bear is a small black bear with cream-colored facial markings around its eyes that give it its name. Females weigh about 150 pounds and males may reach 250 pounds. They have a total body length of 60 to 72 inches. The South American spectacled bear has excellent eyesight and gets its name from the markings around their eyes. These markings are unique to each individual and can be used for identification. Spectacled bears are found in the Andes Mountains of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru. Primarily nocturnal, spectacled bears climb trees and forage on the ground. They also build stick platforms, which are used for reaching elevated food and for sleeping. Spectacled bears tear open masses of bromeliads with their sharp claws. Outside breeding season, they travel alone. During the day, spectacled bears sleep in secluded spots, such as in tree cavities, on tree platforms, between large, exposed tree roots, or in dens dug into cliff faces. DSC_5122.jpg

Wolfe Anatomy The spectacled bear's real name is the Andean bear. It is called the spectacled bear because it has circles of cream-colored fur around its eyes, which make it look like it's wearing glasses. This cream-colored fur can also extend down its throat and chest. Each bear has its own unique pattern of "spectacle" markings. The rest of its fur is black or dark brown. They have specialized claws for climbing trees. In the wild, they live for about 25 years. Habitat The spectacled bear is the only species of bear that lives in Latin America. These bears can live in the Andean deserts, up through the misty cloud forests, and all the way up to the mountain-top paramo grasslands. They prefer living in densely forested areas, as they are very timid and want to avoid humans. Their range includes the country of Panama all the way south to Argentina.

Wolfe Diet The spectacled bear's favorite foods are fruits and bromeliads. They are known to spend days up in trees collecting fruit. Sometimes they will even build platforms out of broken branches in order to reach their desired treat! They also enjoy dining on berries, grasses, tree bark, honey, sugarcane and insects. If necessary, they will eat small animals like rodents, rabbits and birds. These bears do not hibernate, as their food sources are available all year round. The spectacled bear plays an important role in the health of its habitat it disperses tree seeds that are too large for other animals to digest. Scientists believe that the bears are responsible for the spreading of three important types of trees in their habitat.

Can you see how the spectacled bear got its name? The white fur around its eyes reminded people of spectacles, or eyeglasses.
    Zoo name: Miss Houdini
    Species: Spectacled Bear
    Her story
When the San Diego Zoo's bus drivers pull up to the spectacled bear enclosure, the passengers admire Miss Houdini, then usually ask three questions: "How old is that baby bear? Why is she called a spectacled bear? And why is her name Miss Houdini?" claws , bowed legs, and bare footpads. Their enclosure features a jungle gym of logs, including one big upright stump with a hollowed-out top that is Miss Houdini's favorite perch. She reclines in this log with her head thrown back and her legs hanging out, and when she gets excited she stands on the top and hops up and down. The spectacled bears' enclosure also contains a pool, and sometimes the keepers put live goldfish into the water for the bears to catch. Miss Houdini doesn't like to go into the water, so she sits at the edge and waits for Tommy to drive the fish to the edge. Otherwise, keepers feed the bears separately, since Tommy would eat all the bear biscuits, veggies, bones, crickets, and worms if he could.

Currently the San Diego Zoo doesn't have any sloth bears. They were here for many years, but the Zoo now has sun bears, polar bears, brown bears, spectacled bears, and pandas. Sloth bears are very cute, with their long fur that always seems to be sticking out in all directions. They also have a unique way of eating: they find a termite nest, dig it open, blow the dust off, then actually suck up the termites like a vacuum cleaner! Their mouths are specially formed so they can make a "tube" to suck up the insects, and they can close off their nostrils so no termites crawl up their nose. Sloth bears are not actually listed as endangered , but they are listed as "vulnerable" to extinction and as a species that needs conservation help. They are losing more and more of their

Ucumari, The Short-Faced Bear of South America
The spectacled bear, also called the "ucumari" or Andean bear, received its popular name because it appears to be wearing glasses.
It is the only bear found in South America where it is the largest carnivore and the second largest land mammal next to the tapir .
The spectacled bear is directly descended from the extinct short-faced "bulldog" bear (Arctodus simus) which roamed north and south america as the largest predator during the last ice age.
Population and Distribution The spectacled bear is a rare and endangered species. It is possible that there are less than 2,000 of these bears still in the wild. The cloud forest habitat in which it lives is rapidly disappearing under the increasing deforestation of the land to support subsistence agriculture.
Its range extends along the slopes of the Andes mountains in Venezuela, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. Small pockets of a few spectacled bears may also live in southern Panama and northern Argentina on the respective northern and southern limits of the Andean mountain range.
Its preferred habitat is the moist tropical forest which exists between the desert scrub present at lower elevations and the alpine meadows at the higher elevations within the Andes.

    Ten Facts About Bears
Bears are large animals with thick, strong legs. Bears have big heads, little eyes and small round ears. All bears are covered with heavy fur.
Bears can see and hear like us. Bears have a very good sense of smell. Bears can stand on their hind legs to smell and see better. Bears are smart and curious animals.
There are 8 different kinds of bears - brown bears, American black bears, polar bears, giant panda bears, Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, spectacled bears and sun bears. Brown bears are also called grizzly bears. Bears live in all parts of the world, except Africa, Australia and Antarctica.
Sun bears are the smallest bears. Sun bears live in southeast Asia. They weigh about 45 kilograms (100 pounds). Sun bears are the size of a large dog. Brown bears and polar bears are the biggest bears. They can be over 10 feet long. If a big brown bear or polar bear stands on its hind legs, its head is higher than the ceiling in most houses and classrooms.
