Tremarctos ornatus F.G. Cuvier, 1825
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The spectacled bear is small and dark, ranging in color from black to brown, and a few have a reddish tinge. It has distinctive circular or semicircular creamy white markings on the face around the eyes, reminiscent of specta cles. Lines and patches of white usually extend onto the throat and chest as well. The amount and pattern of the white markings can be quite variable.
SIZE There are few measurements available for this bear. However, the body length of adults is about 150 to 180 centimeters (60 to 72 inches) and males may be 30 to 40 percent larger than females. Males weigh 100 to 155 kilograms (220 t o 340 pounds) and females weigh 64 to 82 kilograms (140 to 180 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh from 300 to 360 grams (10 to 11 1/2 ounces).
HABITAT Spectacled bears are highly adaptable and are found in a wide range of habitats, including rainforest, cloud forest, dry forest, steppe lands, and coastal scrub desert. Possibly because of loss of habitat and persecution by huma ns, they appear to be more common in heavy forest. They have been reported at altitudes ranging from about 180 to 4,200 meters (600 to 13,800 feet) but prefer moist forests between about 1,800 and 2,700 meters (6,000 and 8,800 feet). No populations have been documented from areas that lack bromeliads and fruits.

Statistics Body length: 150-180cm, Weight: males: 100-155kg, females: 64-82kg. Physical Description Spectacled bears have thick black or brown fur with medium length hair. They have pale yellow bands across the base of nose and sometimes across their foreheads to the cheeks and throat, giving the appearance of a pair of spectacles. Lines or patches of white may also extend onto the chest. Distribution Spectacled bears are the only bear species found in South America. They inhabit the mountainous regions of Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, Peru and Venezuela. Habitat Spectacled bears occupy a variety of habitats, including grassland, brush, rainforests, dry forest and coastal scrub desert, although they are typically found in mountain forest. Diet They have a varied diet depending on seasonal and altitudinal food availability, but they favour plants such as bromeliads, palms, orchids and fruits. A lesser part of their diet is made up of nuts, seeds, carrion and small animals.

The Spectacled Bear
The last of the lineage of short-faced bears, the spectacled bear evolved as the sole bear species isolated in South America after the end of the last ice age. Spectacled bears are medium-sized by bear standards, but they are the second-largest land mammals in South America. Only the tapir is larger. Its name refers to the light-colored markings surrounding the eyes. One of its common names in Spanish means “bear with eyeglasses”; another means “the bromeliad eating bear”.
The evolutionary paths that this intriguing bear has followed to reach this niche are paralleled in complexity and variety by the actual trails across landscapes that its ancestors trod to reach their last stronghold in the Andes Mountains. From early Tremarctine (short-faced) bears in eastern Asia about 15 million years ago, this trail led across the Bering Land Bridge to what is now Alaska. These were the first bears to make this journey, and we must assume that conditions at that time were not greatly different than during the most recent ice ages of the Pleistocene (see the chapter on brown bears).

On the trail of the leatherbacks Since the end of June 2005, WWF and its partners have been tracking an increasing number of leatherback marine turtles in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
We've seen some of these leatherbacks, which are the biggest of all marine turtles, swim to depths of almost a 1000m and cover distances of over 2000km.
Follow their ocean voyages and track their movements and dives with the weekly reports and maps on the Leatherback tracking site.

A Spectacled Stare Tremarctos ornatus short-faced bear The spectacled bear gets its name from the distinctive circular bands which ring its eyes. The markings vary slightly from bear to bear, but the general look is the same. The markings are a creamy-yellowish color while the rest of the fur on the animal could be anywhere from brown to black. The spectacled bear is a small animal as bears go, the males generally weighing from 220 to 340 pounds, and the females 140 to 180 pounds. The animals are generally from 60-72 inches in length, with the females being about 30% smaller, on average, than the males. The females are generally mature somewhere between their 4th and 7th years. After maturity, the animals will mate between May and June, with the litters of up to 3 being born during the Nov-Feb period. The cubs weigh a mere 10-11 1/2 ounces at birth. During the mating months, the bears will pair up and stay together for up to two weeks, copulating frequently. Like most other bears, the female requires this stimulation to ovulate. Apart from basic mating and other minor habits, we have no information on the social life of these animals in the wild. The bears that have been studied in captivity have shed some light on their society. Females and cubs communicate with vocalizations, of which somewhere between two and five calls have been identified (depending on which source you check with).

Habitat
  • Spectacled bear habitat includes coastal and inland deserts, dry forests, rain forests, cloud forests, steppes, and plateaus.
  • They tend to inhabit areas that are isolated and inhospitable and avoid humans whenever they can.
  • Spectacled bears prefer the warm humid and foggy clouds that are above the rain forest floor at higher elevations.
Distribution
  • Spectacled bears live in South America on the heart of the Andes in Venezuela, Columbia, and the coastal foothills of Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia.

Scientific Publications Spotlight on Vet Medicine
December 22, 2004 An Aging Bear's Back National Zoo vets diagnose an aging spectacled bear with spondylosis, a spinal condition common in old animals.
A spectacled bear at the Zoo. Spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus) are the only bear species native to South America. Also known as Andean bears, they live in diverse habitats in the Andes mountain ranges from western Venezuela through Bolivia, but most are now found in cloud forests on the eastern slopes of the eastern Andes. They are believed to have once enjoyed a wider distribution that extended into Panama and Argentina.
Named for the whitish fur that circles their eyes and sometimes covers the nose, chin, and chest, spectacled bears are otherwise brown to black in color. Males range from five to more than six feet in length and weigh from 300 to 385 pounds; females are about two-thirds the size of males. Despite their relatively large size, these bears spend a lot of time in trees, both foraging and resting. Spectacled bears possess large, strong jaw muscles to chew the nuts and fibrous plant material, such as bromeliads, palms, and bamboo, that make up part of their diet. They also eat a great deal of fruit, as well as animals such as insects, rodent, birds, and the occasional domestic livestock. At the Zoo, these bears eat a dry chow and fruits and vegetables including sweet potatoes, carrots, oranges, apples, and grapes.

The smallest bear in the world, an adult male Malayan sun bear is about 4 feet (1.2 m) tall when standing on its hind legs and can weigh up to 140 pounds (64 kg). Despite their small size, sun bears can be very dangerous. Species Description and Natural History Named for the golden crescent, or "U" shaped golden patch on their chest, sun bears are otherwise all black with smooth, short fur. They are increasingly rare residents of tropical rain forest in southern China, Burma, Malaysia, Sumatra, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Borneo. Malayan sun bears are skillful climbers, aided by long sickle-shaped claws on all four feet. These extremely long claws up to six inches allow the bears to dig for honey and grubs, which they lick up using their long tongues. The bears are omnivores. Their diet also includes fruits, insects, small mammals, and birds. Sun bears sometimes will damage coconut palm, banana, and cocoa plantations through foraging. They usually are nocturnal creatures. Smell is the sun bear's most important sense and their eyesight is not very good.
