You are here: BBC Animals Conservation From Winnie the Pooh to Paddington, bears have always had a special place in the imagination. Bears can be found in Europe, Asia, North and South America and the Arctic but for how much longer? Seven out of the nine bear species are vulnerable or endangered. Asiatic black bears are also known as moon bears because of the crescent shaped marking on their chests. They are found throughout Asia from Pakistan to Japan. The main threats to Asiatic black bears are deforestation and loss of habitat. They often live in hilly or mountainous forest areas, moving to the lower slopes during the winter. Logging leading to deforestation across Asia is a major threat to their survival, as is the encroachment of human settlements. Asiatic black bears are sometimes killed by farmers as they take livestock or strip the bark from valuable timber trees. These bears are also hunted or ‘farmed’ for their gall bladders and other body parts which are used in traditional medicine. The trade seems to be particularly extensive in China, Korea and Japan where prices are increasing.

The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.

Bears
Bear: wav au
Polar Bear: wav au Bears are large carnivorous mammals closely related to pandas, raccoons, and dogs. They are distinguished from other carnivore families by having heavy bodies, a short tail and short, rounded ears, plantigrade feet (both heel and sole touching the ground, like in humans), and a hind foot with five toes. They also do not have the teeth common in most carnivores; the crushing molars of bears are believed to be an adaptation for a plant diet. Although bears are classified as carnivores, the different species vary widely in their feeding habits. For example, the polar bear feeds almost only on seals and other animals, but may also graze on vegetation. The grizzly eats grasses, herbs, berries, and nuts as well as living or dead animals. Bears occupy many habitats, but human development has pushed them primarily into mountain forest , and arctic wildernesses. They live in South America, North America, Asia, Europe, and in the Arctic near the North Pole.

Brown bears include some of the world's biggest bears, such as the brown bears of Europe and Asia, Alaskan brown bears such as the Kodiak bear and peninsula brown bear, and the grizzly bears of western North America. Alaskan brown bears, or

A bear is distinguished from members of the other carnivore families by its heavy body; short tail; short, rounded ears; and plantigrade feet (both heel and sole touch the ground, as in humans) with five clawed toes. It also lacks the shearing teeth common to most carnivores; the crushing molars of a bear are believed to be an adaptation for a plant diet. For example, the polar bear feeds almost exclusively on seals and other animals, but it may also graze on vegetation ; the grizzly eats grasses, herbs, berries, and nuts as well as living or dead fish and other animals.

In Colombia, for example, 75% of the human population is concentrated in the Andes. As farmers more commonly settle in Threats WCS Activities 1. Determine effects of habitat fragmentation. WCS researchers evaluate how spectacled bear populations adapt to habitat loss and fragmentation. WCS data indicate that to some extent bears are capable of moving across non-forested areas, offering some hope to long-term conservation efforts in agricultural regions. WCS collects genetic samples from bears to monitor if protected areas are large enough to prevent inbreeding. 2. Investigate variation in altitudinal range.

Spectacled Bear
The Spectacled bear can be found in South America. It is not known if this bear hibernates, but it is thought that they don't due to the warmer weather, and availability of food year round. The Spectacled bear's favorite food is fruit. It will also eat bromeliads, rodents and insects.
The Spectacled bear gets it's name by the markings around it's eyes. These markings can help us identify each bear from another. They have powerful paws that help them climb trees. Often times they will bend branches to reach the fruits of the tree.
