The Bear Facts: The East Asian
Market for Bear Gall Bladder
A TRAFFIC Network report
July 1995
Summary

For the purposes of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the bear is a walking drugstore. Many parts of the bear, from fat to brain to spinal cord, have been used for millennia. The most coveted medicinal part of the bear is the bile within the gall bladder, which gram for gram can exceed the cost of narcotics. There is increasing evidence that the Asian demand for bear gall bladder is impacting bears in nearly all of their diverse habitats around the world. This report examines the markets for bear gall bladder in East Asia, which is the centre of world demand. The markets for bear gall bladder in the People's Republic of China, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, the Republic of South Korea and Taiwan are examined, comparing their current situation with that documented by TRAFFIC USA in the 1991 report The Asian Trade in Bears and Bear Parts Discussions in the full report address bear farming in China, Hong Kong's gall bladder registration scheme, biological implications of the legal trade in bear gall bladders in Japan and Taiwan's efforts to monitor its domestic market for bear gall bladder. Finally, recommendations are given for actions necessary to better understand, monitor and control the trade in bear gall bladders and bile to ensure that it does not decimate wild bear populations, if not entire species.

DEDICATION
This report is dedicated to Boonlerd Angirijinda, who passed away in 1992. His unwavering dedication to the preservation of wildlife in spite of harassment and threats to his life from Thailand's nefarious endangered species profiteers is, even now, an inspiration. In what was easily the most memorable moment of the Eighth Conference of the parties of CITES, Mr. Boonlerd's emotional plea for inclusion of the North American Black Bear in Appendix II was instrumental in swinging the vote of the Parties to approve an Appendix II listing for the species. In countries that strictly honor CITES, the listing eliminated a loophole that gave carte blanche to illegal international trade in bear parts.
Boonlerd, you are missed.
INTRODUCTION
China's bear farms are currently the subject of heated debate. Proponents of extracting bile from captive bears argue that such facilities provide an abundant, renewable supply of bile for medicinal use while simultaneously reducing pressure on China's-and the world's-wild bear populations.
Christopher Servheen and Judy Mills provided the first detailed look at bear farms in China and South Korea in "The Asian Trade in Bears and Bear Parts," a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) U.S.p;sponsored report published in 1991. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other organizations have also compiled a considerable amount of data on the subject. The goal of this monograph is to add to this existing knowledge and to discuss possible solutions to end China's rush into stocking its bear farms with still more wildp;caught bears. This report also looks at the market for bear gall bladders on Taiwan and provides a brief review of the global trade in bears and their parts.

SLOTH BEAR Melursus ursinus
Description:
The sloth bear is a medium size bear weighing between 175 and 310 pounds with a body length of between 60 and 75 inches. It has a very shaggy coat of black fur, with grey and brown hairs mixed in. On the chest there is a white or cream colored U shaped or Y shaped patch of fur. This same lighter color occurs around the muzzle and sometimes extends around the eyes. The snout is very mobile and the nostrils can be closed voluntarily.
Range: It is found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal , Bhutan and Sri Lanka.
Habitat: The sloth bear prefers grasslands and forested area at predominantly lower altitudes. It is more often found in drier forests and areas with rock outcroppings. Diet: A sloth bear's diet is mostly comprised of termites for which this species is specially adapted. Its upper incisors are missing, forming a gap, and its lips can extend to form a tube. With this, the sloth bear is able to suck up the termites, making a sound that can be heard from over 330 feet away. Other items in the sloth bear diet are fruit and other plant matter, eggs, insects, honeycomb and carrion. Social Organization: Little is known about this bear in the wild but it is thought that they maintain small territories and live as solitary individuals except when a female is caring for her young. They do have several specific vocalizations. What little is known about the sloth bear in the wild has often been learned from field studies done from the back of elephants.
