Black Bear Ursidae
This family which is made up of seven species (Grizzly, Polar bear, American black bear, Asian black bear, Sun bear, Sloth bear, Spectacled bear), includes the world's largest terrestrial carnivores - Polar bears. All bears except the polar bear are considered omnivores, and the Polar bear is the only bear classified as a carnivore, feeding mainly on fish and seals.
The Polar bears are the largest and can weigh over 1700 pounds, and the smallest is the Sun bear weighing in at 60-125 pounds. In species such as the Sun and Sloth bears who have only one mate, the males are only 10-20% larger than the females, but in species where males compete for females, they can be as much as 100% larger than the females.
As a rule, bears are peaceful animals and try to avoid conflict. They can be formidable adversaries when they feel that they, their offspring or their food supply are threatened. The majority of bear attack stories are untrue, and those that are are usually found to be related to provocation

BEAR (Family Ursidae) Bear Anatomy and Physiology Size Weight Height Length ... Scat (feces) Size The size of individual bears has long caused heated discussions and continual misjudgment. A bear's size is normally expressed in terms of weight, which is difficult to judge due to individual variations in height, thickness of fur, and physical stature, as well as the observer's proximity to the bear and particular level of stress. Under calm circumstances a bear's weight is often misjudged, but during a close encounter Accurate weight determination is impossible by nearly all except possibly a seasoned field scientist. "The grizzly's reputation for ferociousness toward people," notes Terry Domico in Bears of the World, "makes the animal seem much larger." To the untrained eye, all bears are "big", as human perception of weight is most often much greater than an animal's true size. During a survey in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, responses to the weights of American black bears ranged from four hundred to four thousand pounds. The actual weights were ninety-five to one hundred fifteen pounds. "The boar was small," according to Ben East in Bears, "hardly more than 150 pounds, but still big enough to be a formidable antagonist . . . the men guessed him at four hundred pounds."

The Sloth Bear
The sloth bear, Ursus ursinus , arose from the oldest lineage of the true bears. They diverged from the main lineage of bears about 6 million years ago. Like the giant panda, it is likely that climatic fluctuations were important in isolating ancestral sloth bears in the south of Asia long enough to diverge as a separate species. It is possible that a group of bears managed to colonize the Indian subcontinent either during a warm, interglacial period in the late Miocene era, or during one of the cold periods. Cold periods occurred at that time about every 100,000 years. In one scenario, we could imagine that after the ancestral sloth bears had occupied India, the climate cooled again and a wall of glaciers descended from the Himalayas that may have blocked any movement of bears in or out of India. Another possibility is that their ancestors moved south across eastern Asia during a cold period, perhaps as far as the edge of the Himalayas. Then, as the climate warmed, one group moved into the mountain foothills and became isolated there.

We decided on this device for a number of reasons. First, as Canadians in Britain, we were nostalgic for many things Canadian, and the black bear is certainly an important character in the Canadian woods. Second, Crispin at one time worked as a bearward at the Vancouver zoo, and has a great fondness for bears, regarding them as his personal totem.

When 18th-century European museum curators were first sent specimens of a large furry mammal with long curved white claws, they named it "bear-like sloth" because its claws resemble those of South American sloths" Later taxonomists realized that the species was a tropical bear unrelated to sloths, but its wrongheaded name remainsthe sloth bear. Also available in Notecard Assortment Pack #AST-504 Bears are loners and usually wander by themselves in search of food. Females with cubs generally feed together. Herbaceous plants, roots, corms, and berries comprise most of their diet. They also eat insects, rodents, fish, and hoofed animals. In July and August, when salmon swim up coastal rivers, large groups of bears can be seen fishing together. Bears must eat enough high-energy food to store the huge amounts of fat needed to sustain them through hibernation. Responding to a mysterious inner clock, bears begin looking for suitable places to dig their dens in early fall. Dens are dug in hillsides under tree roots or large rocks and are lined with pine and fir boughs. Bears then become increasingly lethargic and enter their dens sometime in November.

SRI LANKAN SLOTH BEAR
(Melursus ursinus inornatus) Range: Sri Lanka (another race is found in India) Habitat: Lowland forests Diet: Termites, insects, sugarcane, honey, eggs, carrion (dead and decaying flesh), fruits and flowers Status Endangered (SSP). The sloth bear is rare, but no exact figures are available. Approx. Dimensions
of Adult: Length: 4 to 6 feet
Shoulder height: 24 to 36 inches
Weight: 198 to 253 lbs. Lifespan: 30 years in captivity Reproduction: Gestation: 210 days. Offspring: 1 to 3 (usually 2 ). Sloth bears are reported to have only one mate. The northern populations breed in June, and the southern populations breed year round. Cubs leave the den at two to three months and will ride on their mother's back. They remain with their mother until they are almost grown at age two to three.
The sloth bear has a feeding adaptation that is unique to the bear family. The snout is long, the nostrils can be closed and the bare lips are very flexible. The palate is hollowed and the upper incisor teeth are absent, forming a gap in the upper teeth. These characteristics enable the sloth bear to feed on termites by digging up the mound and sucking up the occupants with a vacuum cleaner action. The noise from this action may be heard for up to 600 feet.
This bear has short legs and large feet. The claws are very long and sickle-like and are useful when foraging in trees for fruits and flowers. The sloth bear is the only bear with the ability to hang upside down in trees (sloth-like), though it does this rarely. One theory is that this behavior is responsible for its common name, a more likely theory is that its name is derived from the English term "sloth" which is one who is slow, apathetic and lazy. Because of its nocturnal behavior it would have appeared slow to the first Europeans who encountered it during the day.

Below you will find a photo and a brief description of each of the other seven species. For additional information, see the Additional Reading page. Description
: This species is similar in size and appearance to the American black bear, although the fur is longer, soft, and shaggy. Adult males weigh from 200 to 255 pounds (92-116 kg.) and adult females weigh between 110 and 225 pounds(50-102 kg.). The Asiatic black bear is an excellent tree climber, as are most of the bear species. Its predominantly herbivorous diet resembles that of its American cousin: plants, fruits, insects, bees' nests, and invertebrates are preferred foods. The most obvious difference between the two species is the chest blaze. This feature is found in about 25% of American black bears, and can vary in size and shape. In contrast, nearly all Asiatic black bears have cream-colored chest blazes in a crescent shape, giving the species its other common name: "moon bear."

http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/PolarBears/pbscientific.html
I. Scientific Classification. A. Order - Carnivora.
The scientific order Carnivora includes bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, otters, weasels, and their relatives. All typical carnivores have well developed claws and a pair of specialized cheek teeth for cutting hard foods. B. Family - Ursidae.
All bears belong to this family. The family is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). C. Genus, species - Ursus maritimus. 1. There are five other species in the genus Ursus: brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears. Species can be distinguished by size, build, coloration, and habitat. Ursus maritimus is Latin for "sea bear". D. Fossil record.
The oldest known polar bear fossil is less than 100,000 years old. Polar bears probably developed during the Pleistocene era from an ancestral brown bear. Polar bears and brown bears are still closely related; when cross-bred, they produce fertile offspring.

COMMON NAME:
Sloth Bear
TAXONOMIC CLASSIFICATION:
Class:
Mammalia
Order: Carnivora
Family: Ursidae
Included in Appendix I of CITES. The sloth bear has a distinctively long, shaggy coat. Its hair is particularly long around the neck and on the back of the head. It is the only bear with long hairs on the ears. Sloth bears are typically black and have a broad, white chest blaze. They have long, slightly curved front claws, for digging, and shorter claws on the hind legs. They have a very long white muzzle and a broad palate with protrusible, mobile lips, and lack two upper middle incisors, all of which helps them to eat ants and termites.
Sloth bears can be found in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. The population is highly fragmented and under continuous pressure because of habitat conversions (agriculture) and forest destruction. They seem to survive best in mountainous regions. The species is included in Appendix I. Talk to UNPA! Contact us with your questions, comments and suggestions at
