Before they left town, Hani and Paji were stars at Capron Park Zoo where they were beloved by zoo-goers. The curators of the zoo were especially enthralled with the bears. When they were cubs, the sisters were successfully introduced to their father and lived as a family unit on exhibit. Staff was able to videotape interactions between the sisters and their parents that will help to broaden understanding of this elusive species. But as Hani and Paji began to mature, their mother made it clear that the time had come for the group to split up. She became more assertive when dealing with the little bears. Zoo officials decided to move the cubs to allow the parents to mate again. Just like in the wild, the time had come for the cubs to head off on their own.
“They’ll be missed, but it’s in the best interest of the species,” said Shira Marcure, director of Capron Park Zoo.
Where's the Bears?
There are probably only 7,000 sloth bears in the world and only 30 in North American zoos. Brookfield Zoo was an obvious destination for the cubs because of its long history of exhibiting the species and participating in a conservation program on behalf of the bears. The program involved joining forces with the Smithsonian and National Zoo to support a group of scientists observing sloth bears in India. Given the nature of sloth bears and the abundance of tigers in the area of the study, observations were made from atop a safe perch-the back of an Asian elephant.
Brookfield Zoo hopes to continue studying and assisting this fascinating species. Plans may include the eventual arrival of a male sloth bear for mating. Until then, the sisters are doing their part as ambassadors for their species-drawing big crowds, making people aware of sloth bears, and hopefully concern for their dwindling numbers.

Habitat
  • Sloth bears live in warm, humid forests or in grasslands near the equator.
  • They can live in a wide variety of forest types from dry thorn forests in the north to wet tropical forests in the south.
Distribution
  • Sloth bears live in Southeast Asia primarily in the forest areas of Sri Lanka and India.
  • They have also been reported in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Burma.
  • Their populations are estimated to be between 1000 and 7000.

Sri Lankan Sloth Bear @ WWW Virtual Library Sri Lanka (Lakshman Nadaraja; @http://www.lankachronicle.com) The sloth bear (Ursus ursinus), formerly found in most dry zone low country jungles, is now confined to pockets of relatively undisturbed forest. It seems that with encroachment and the general disturbance of our forests, the sloth bear is among the first animals to disappear. Unfortunately, we have very little scientific data on the sloth bear in Sri Lanka. Its population dynamics, breeding patterns, feeding requirements, range, size, etc., are all largely unknown. It the species is to continue to survive in Sri Lanka, we desperately need to protect quality habitats and undertake the scientific study these magnificent bears. The fun on the female bear is usually thicker than on the males. She has a dense tuft of hair between her shoulders, which makes it easy for the cub, who travels on her back, to hold on. This particular cub would climb up her rear leg and down her foreleg, tail first, while she moved around grubbing. The mother bear and cub were passing under a stand of palu trees and feeding on the fallen fruit. Then, the female climbed the tree, closely followed by her cub. They both fed on the ripe palu, the bear cub adeptly picking the fruit himself, for about half an hour. Then they backed down the tree and ambled into the scrub.

RESEARCH AND EXPLORATION
Nose to Nose with Sloth Bears
The front end of a sloth bear is unmistakable. From its shaggy black head protrudes a long whitish muzzle. The three-inch-long front claws are ivory white. These are the tools of this specialized bear's trade: feeding on termites and ants by ripping up their mounds and nests.
Ranging India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and possibly Bangladesh, these 150- to 300-pound (70- to 140-kilogram) bears feed on fruits and insects. They sound like bellows when using their flexible snouts and lips to blow away dirt and suck up termites and ants. But don't be misled: This frowsy, gentle-looking bear can be ferocious, occasionally mauling or killing villagers who enter the forest. Yoganand often talks with villagers to help minimize conflicts. "Attacks can be prevented if people avoid certain places."
One goal of his research has been to track the roamings of a dozen radio-collared bears in the dry deciduous forests of India's Panna National Park. He's discovered that some bears have home ranges of up to 40 square miles (100 square kilometers). His conclusion: "We need to protect large patches of their habitat and maintain links between those patches. Unfortunately sloth bears have to compete with charismatic species such as tigers. The bears get far less attention than they deserve."

A Sloth or Not a Sloth
In the late 1700's, the first sloth bear pelts were sent from India to Britain.
Dr. George Shaw from the British Museum originally classed them as belonging to the family of sloths, calling them bear sloths.
It was not until 1810, when a live sloth bear was shipped to Paris, that the classification error was corrected and the name reversed to sloth bear.
Population and Distribution It is thought that the sloth bear is in steady decline with somewhere between 7,000 to 10,000 bears still living in the wild. They live in the forests on the island of Sri Lanka, India, Bhutan, Nepal and Bangladesh.
Its preferred habitat includes a wide variety of forests types ranging from the thorn forests of northern India to the wet tropical forests further south. Widespread land clearing and deforestation continue to reduce its available habitat.
Vital Statistics The sloth bear is a large mammal whose size and weight show high variability depending on food availability, climatic conditions, etc.
Adult sloth bears stand approximately 85 centimeters (2 3/4 feet) tall at the shoulders when on all fours and have a length of about 140 to 170 centimeters (4 1/2 to 5 1/2 feet). Their tail is slightly longer than other bears at 16 to 18 centimeters (6 to 7 inches) long.

All typical carnivores have well developed claws and a pair of specialized cheek teeth for cutting hard foods. Family - Ursidae. All bears belong to this family. The family is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). Genus, species - Ursus maritimus.
    • There are five other species in the genus Ursus: brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears. Species can be distinguished by size, build, coloration, and habitat. . Ursus maritimus is Latin for "sea bear".

Bears Bears are large, powerful mammals. Most bears are omnivores (they eat both plants and meat); polar bears are the only exception - they are carnivores (they eat only only meat). There are eight species of bears alive today, including American black bears ( Ursus americanus ), Asiatic black bears ( Ursus thibetanus ), brown bears ( Ursus arctos = the grizzly bear), giant pandas, polar bears, sloth bears ( Melursus ursinus ), spectacled bears ( Tremarctos ornatus ), and sun bears ( Helarctos malayanus ). The smallest bear is the Sun bear (it is also called the honey bear and the Malay bear). Hibernation : During cold winter months, some bears go into a dormant state in which their heart rate is extremely low, their body temperature is relatively high, they neither eat nor release bodily waste, and they can be roused (unlike "true" hibernators such as chipmunks). In older scientific literature, hibernation used to refer only to low-body-temperature winter dormancy, but now that much more is known about this dormancy phase, some bears (like the black bear) are considered to be highly efficient hibernators (some biologists refer to these animals as "super hibernators").

Currently the San Diego Zoo doesn't have any sloth bears. They were here for many years, but the Zoo now has sun bears, polar bears, brown bears, spectacled bears, and pandas. Sloth bears are very cute, with their long fur that always seems to be sticking out in all directions. They also have a unique way of eating: they find a termite nest, dig it open, blow the dust off, then actually suck up the termites like a vacuum cleaner! Their mouths are specially formed so they can make a "tube" to suck up the insects, and they can close off their nostrils so no termites crawl up their nose. Sloth bears are not actually listed as endangered , but they are listed as "vulnerable" to extinction and as a species that needs conservation help. They are losing more and more of their

Melursus ursinus Sloth bears are restricted to the Indian subcontinent: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. They are the only species of bears specifically adapted to feed on insects, especially termites and ants, although they also feed on fruits when available. They use their strong claws to break open hard termite mounds or to dig underground termite colonies. Sloth bears can also be observed feeding on honeycombs in trees about 20 m above the ground. They sometimes show aggressive behavior towards humans and other natural predators. The above picture was taken at the Washington DC zoo, in August, 2002. Family Ursidae
