Bears
Bear: wav au
Polar Bear: wav au Bears are large carnivorous mammals closely related to pandas, raccoons, and dogs. They are distinguished from other carnivore families by having heavy bodies, a short tail and short, rounded ears, plantigrade feet (both heel and sole touching the ground, like in humans), and a hind foot with five toes. They also do not have the teeth common in most carnivores; the crushing molars of bears are believed to be an adaptation for a plant diet. Although bears are classified as carnivores, the different species vary widely in their feeding habits. For example, the polar bear feeds almost only on seals and other animals, but may also graze on vegetation. The grizzly eats grasses, herbs, berries, and nuts as well as living or dead animals. Bears occupy many habitats, but human development has pushed them primarily into mountain forest , and arctic wildernesses. They live in South America, North America, Asia, Europe, and in the Arctic near the North Pole.

Sloth Bear
The Sloth bear has very shaggy hair. Their muzzle is long, much longer than the other seven bears. Using their claws to dig, they can then use their lips to form a tube which can go deep into the ground, or hard to reach areas like dead trees for their food. Their main food is termites. You can hear them suck up their food from several feet away.
Most sloth bears live in forests and tropical rain forests of India. Out of all the bears, it seems that the Sloth bear enjoys being around other bears. When we watched the Sloth bears at Toledo zoo they looked like the enjoyed making faces at each other.

Sloth Bears - Habitat
BBCi
www.bbc.co.uk Sloth Bears (Indian bears, Jungle jokers, lip bears or Ursus ursinus Meyer) inhabit forested areas and grasslands at lower elevations. They can live both in dry and jungle areas. The Sloth Bear species can be found in India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal.
Sloth Bears - Evolution
The ancestors of all modern bears, including the Sloth bear, evolved from a bear-like dog that developed from the miacids (a small tree-climbing carnivorous mammal living 30-40 million years ago.) The first bears lived in subtropical Europe about 20 million years ago. It was the size of a small dog. About 2.5 million years ago the direct ancestors of the modern bears appeared. The genus Ursus has divided into three evolutionary lines about 2 million years ago.
Sloth Bears - Diet
The main food for Sloth Bears is termites, which are abundant and stable food source. They also eat other insects, bird eggs, honey, fruits and various kinds of vegetation. Sloth Bears have special adaptations for eating termites. They lack the inner part of upper incisors, this allows them to form a gap and suck the termites into their mouths.

Sloth bear
SUBFAMILY URSINAE
Ursus ursinus Meyer, 1793
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sloth bear is small and usually black, with a long shaggy coat, especially over the shoulders. Brown and gray hairs may be mixed in with the dark coat, and cinnamon and reddish individuals have also been reported. It has a distinctive whitish or yellowish chest patch in the shape of a wide U, or sometimes a Y if the lower part of the white hairs extend down the chest. The snout is light colored and mobile. The nostrils can be closed voluntarily. It is thought that the reduced hair on the muzzle may be an adaptation for coping with the defensive secretions of termites.
SIZE Adults are 150 to 190 centimeters (60 to 75 inches) long. Males weigh 80 to 140 kilograms (175 to 310 pounds), and females weigh 55 to 95 kilograms (120 to 210 pounds).
HABITAT Sloth bears are found in forested areas and in grasslands, predominantly at lower elevations. They apparently favor drier forests and have been reported to prefer areas with rocky outcrops.
DISTRIBUTION Most sloth bears are found in India and Sri Lanka, but they have also been reported from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Gone Fishin'
The bears we know today actually have as their ancestors bears that have been evolving for some 40 million years. Fossils of the earliest "true bear", Ursavus elemensis, have been found from the Mioncene Epoch in what was then sub-tropical Europe, and show a small dog-size animal with characteristics that show a blending of dog and bear traits. It is believed that all modern bears stem from Ursavus elemensis. Two important primitive bears that should be mentioned are Arctodus simus, the giant short faced bear, and Ursus speleaus, the European cave bear. The giant short faced bear is the largest land carnivore that ever lived. It had extremely long legs, sharp claws and a reach of over 14 feet tall. It is believed that this ancient giant is related to today's small-sized spectacled bear. The cave bear, while feared and worshipped by Neanderthal culture, was actually a herbivore by nature. Cave bears survived two ice ages but were eventually became extinct, leaving a wealth of fossils that helped excite the early paleontologists of the 19th century. From the ancient cave bears evolved the brown bear, Ursus arctos, the American black bear, Ursus americanus and the Asiatic black bear, Selenarctos thibetanus. And from the brown bear evolved the newest species of bear (only 20,000 years old) the polar bear, Ursus maritimus.
