SUBFAMILY URSINAE
Ursus maritimus Phipps, 1774
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The polar bear is immediately recognizable from the distinctive white color of its fur. The neck of the polar bear is longer than in other species of bears. The head is elongated but the ears are relatively small. The front paws are large and are used like paddles for swimming while the hind legs trail behind. The nose, and the skin underneath the white fur, are black. The soles of the feet have small papillae and vacuoles like suction cups to make them less likely to sli p on the ice.
SIZE The polar bear is the largest land carnivore alive in the world today. Adult males weigh from 400 to 600 kilograms (880 to 1,320 pounds) and occasionally exceed 800 kilograms (1,760 pounds). Females are about half the size of male s and normally weigh 200 to 300 kilograms (440 to 660 pounds). Immediately before entering the maternity den in the fall, the weight of a pregnant adult female can exceed 500 kilograms (1,100 pounds) because of the enormous amount of stored fat. Adult m ales measure 240 to 260 centimeters (95 to 105 inches) and females 190 to 210 centimeters (75 to 85 inches). At birth, cubs weigh 600 to 700 grams (1 pound 3 ounces to 1 pound 6 ounces).
HABITAT The preferred habitat of polar bears is the annual ice adjacent to the shorelines of the continents and archipelagos throughout the circumpolar Arctic. Wind and currents create cracks in the ice that concentrate the seals they h unt. Although polar bears have been recorded as far north as 88", they rarely enter the zone of heavy multiyear ice of the central polar basin because it is unproductive biologically and there is little to eat. In areas such as Hudson Bay, where the ice melts completely for a few months in the late summer and fall, bears spend the summer on land, resting to conserve energy and waiting for freeze-up. Males tend to remain along the coast, while family groups and subadults go further inland.

It might come as a surprise then that this majestic species faces an uncertain future: Climate change is causing the disappearance of sea ice from which polar bears hunt their prey. Research funded by WWF found that with less time on the ice to hunt for food and store it leaves polar bears hungry and hinders reproduction. If current climate trends continue unabated, polar bears could become extinct by the end of this century. Polar Bear Scientific Name: Ursus maritimus Home: All around the North Pole on sea ice, islands, and coasts Description: White-furred, long-legged, huge, one-ton bear Polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land! They're twice as big as a tiger, and the ultimate polar predators. Hunting alone for anything from seals to large fish, or scavenging for dead whale or walrus, the polar bear uses a sense of smell 100 times better than ours. A clever polar bear technique for catching a seal requires long hours by a break in the ice, waiting for the seal to come up for air so he can grab it. Polar bears can run at speeds close to 40 mph . Some polar bears never step on land, though, and move from one ice floe to another. Even though they are amazing swimmers, with water-repellent coats and partially webbed paws, the bears prefer to use chunks of ice as rafts to get around! The cold, windy, and ice-covered terrain of the Arctic is a polar bear paradise! Polar bears hiss like cats when they're mad!

http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~brilla/PBear.htm
Overview Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are of special interest because of their large size, white color and position as the top-level carnivore in the remote arctic environment. They occur only in the northern hemisphere nearly always in association with sea ice. They have only two colors of fur: tan and white. Polar bears were created to withstand cold temperatures and are quite adaptable. Polar bears are ferocious and the most dangerous of bears. They can lop a person's head off with one swoop of their paw. Size Polar bears and brown bears evolved from a common ancestor and are still closely related, as demonstrated by matings and production of fertile offspring in zoos. Polar bears are similar in size to large brown bears. Cubs weigh between 1 and 2 pounds (0.5-0.9 kg) at birth. Male polar bears (boars) grow two to three times the size of female polar bears (sows). Boars weigh about 350 to more than 650 kg (772-1,433 lb.) and are about 2.5 to 3 m (8.2-9.8 ft.) long. Sows weigh about 150 to 250 kg (331-551 lb.) and are about 2 to 2.5 m (6.6-8.2 ft.) long. Pregnant females can weigh as much as 500 kg (1,102 lb.). The largest polar bear ever recorded was a male weighing 1,002 kg (2,209 lb.) and measuring 3.7 m (12 ft.) long. Boars stand between eight and nine feet tall. Polar Bears, when they stand on their hind legs, can be as tall as eleven feet. Their shoulder width can be as much as five feet across. Polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land and are twice as big as a tiger.

SINGAPORE (AP) It's a wee bit early for St. Patrick's Day, but Singapore Zoo's two polar bears have turned green. The usually white coats of Sheba and her 13-year-old son, Inuka, turned green a few weeks ago from algae growing in their hollow hair shafts, said Vincent Tan, a spokesman for the zoo. "The harmless algae is the result of Singapore's warm and humid tropical conditions," Tan said. Polar bears have clear hair shafts that appear white because they reflect light. Sheba's coat was successfully bleached with hydrogen peroxide 2.5 weeks ago and Inuka will be given a similar treatment in three weeks, Tan said. The zoo wanted to observe Sheba's reaction to the treatment before bleaching Inuka, he said.

For more than three years, he had been constantly successful in killing so many that his friend tried to persuade him to stop hunting.
"If you insist upon hunting one more bear, you will come across a huge bear who might kill you," he said. The hunter ignored his friend's advice and replied, "I will attack every bear I come across."
A few days later the hunter started out and saw a bear with two cubs. He decided this was not the huge bear he had been worried about, so he attacked the mother bear, and after some difficulty killed her. The cubs ran away. After the hunter dragged the bear home for his tribe, his friend continued to urge him to give up the bear hunt, but without success.
On another hunt, after a few days on the trail, the hunter met a stranger who informed him that near his village were a great many bears. "Every year many are killed by our hunters, but always there is an invincible one that has destroyed many of our hunters. Each time he kills a man, the bear tears him apart, examines him carefully as if searching for a special body mark. He is different because his feet and head are white."

Polar bears forced to hunt on thin ice
Polar Bear is seeing its habitat shrink Story Tools YOUR E-MAIL ALERTS Arctic or Create your own Manage alerts What is this? LONDON (Reuters) Longer Arctic summers and thinning sea ice are threatening the habitats of polar bears and the livelihood of native people, scientists said Wednesday. Arctic ice has lost as much as 40 percent of its thickness in the past 50 years. But researchers, who measured it from space for the first time, said it varies more widely than previously thought and is mainly because of summer melting. "We found a direct link between lengthening summers and thinning ice," said Seymour Laxon of University College London. The thinning sea ice will not cause sea levels to rise but it could have a knock-on effect for the climate, Arctic ecosystems and wildlife. "There is a lot of concern about the effect on the people in the high Arctic. They rely on the ice to do their hunting and fishing and each year the ice season is getting shorter and shorter," Laxon said. "They are very concerned about how that is going to change their way of life," he added in an interview.

Arctic warming threatens polar bears, U.N. told
The retreat of the sea ice also means that more bears may become trapped on or near shore in the summer and fall, and are more likely to run afoul of humans and garbage dumps
November 4, 1998
Web posted at: 2:15: PM EST By Environmental News Network staff At the onset of United Nations climate talks Monday, Greenpeace warned that the impacts of global warming are already appearing and endangering species living in the Arctic especially polar bears. The melting and retreat of Arctic sea ice has already had an affect on polar bear habitat and may ultimately contribute to the extinction of the species, the group says. Scientists studying Arctic sea ice have recently documented significant changes there and say the Arctic is warming at least twice as fast as the rest of the globe, says Greenpeace. The Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center in Norway found a 4.6 percent decline in ice extent and a 5.8 percent decline in actual ice area between 1978 and 1994. Polar bears feed nearly exclusively on ringed seals which they hunt from the ice edge or through the pack ice itself. The bears do not catch the seals in the water, but wait at holes for them to come through the ice to breathe.
