Polar Bear Scientists Announce Concerns
The IUCN/SSC Polar Bear Specialist Group held its 14th meeting June 20-24, 2005, in Seattle, Washington. The scientists recommended that the polar bear be reclassified as a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. They stated that the greatest challenge to polar bears may be large scale ecological change resulting from climatic warming. Bears are fascinating to people. Think of all the ways we have included them in our lives often a child's first toy is a teddy bear, Smokey Bear reminds us to keep our forest safe, bear hugs are thought to be the best, Big Blue Bear is beloved by millions of preschoolers and Pooh bear has movies, a clothing line and decorates more childrens rooms than any other bear. This isn't complete list of how bears are represented in our lives, nor is it a new phenomena, our fascination with bears goes back to man's ancient history and the evidence is in nearly every culture.
Bears, Polar Bear, Grizzly Bear, Black and Brown Bear Zoos report more people flock to see the bears more than nearly any other exhibit. Children and adults alike are in awe of brown bears, grizzly bears, polar bears, Panda bears or any bear! We want bears to be around for thousands of years to come, and this site is dedicated to educating people about bears so we will be able to continue enjoying the fascination. The first step to preserve this fascination is education. “Bears are not companions of men, but children of God, and His charity is broad enough

The largest living carnivores on earth, Polar Bears are found in regions of the Arctic. They are commonly seen on the territory that belongs to Canada, Russia, Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The species has been seen as far south as Greenland and Iceland. In winter, the Polar Bear prefers southern areas. Coastlines are favorite sites of bearing females. In summer months, the species is often observed in areas with land-fast ice. The scientific name of the species is Ursus maritimus . It stems from the notion that this is a marine species that spends a lot of time in water. In fact, these animals do perfectly well on the pack ice of the Arctic Ocean. This is where the Polar Bear usually hunts and gives birth to the cubs. Picture source:

Polar Bears - Description
The Polar Bear is large weighing about 330-1,760 pounds with the female body being generally smaller than the male. The length of the body is approximately 6.6 to 10 feet. In fact, the Polar Bear is similar to the Brown Bear with respect to the body build. The species is large and stocky with a comparatively small head and an elongated neck. Although the fur is generally white, it may appear yellowish or even brown at times, which happens due to oxidation.

Polar Bear Evolution

Prepared in 1995, this report presents a thorough description of what is known about polar bear populations.
Polar Bear Status Report
Polar bears are a potentially threatened ( not endangered) species living in the circumpolar north. They are animals which know no boundaries. They pad across the ice from Russia to Alaska, from Canada to Greenland and onto Norway's Svalbard archipelago. No adequate census exists on which to base a worldwide population estimate, but biologists use a working figure of perhaps 22,000 to 25,000 bears with about sixty percent of those living in Canada. In most sections of the Arctic where estimates are available, polar bear populations are thought to be stable at present. Counts have been decreasing in Baffin Bay and the Davis Strait, where about 3,600 bears are thought to live, but are increasing in the Beaufort Sea, where there are around 3,000 bears. In the 1960s and 1970s, polar bears were under such severe survival pressure that a landmark international accord was reached, despite the tensions and suspicions of the Cold War. The International Agreement on the Conservation of Polar Bears was signed in Oslo, November 15, 1973 by the five nations with polar bear populations (Canada, Denmark which governed Greenland at that time, Norway, the U.S., and the former U.S.S.R.).

Photo courtsey Roger Birkel, The Baltimore Zoo. Polar Bear Scientific Name: Ursus maritimus Home: All around the North Pole on sea ice, islands, and coasts Description: White-furred, long-legged, huge, one-ton bear Polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land! They're twice as big as a tiger, and the ultimate polar predators. Hunting alone for anything from seals to large fish, or scavenging for dead whale or walrus, the polar bear uses a sense of smell 100 times better than ours. A clever polar bear technique for catching a seal requires long hours by a break in the ice, waiting for the seal to come up for air so he can grab it. Polar bears can run at speeds close to 40 mph . Some polar bears never step on land, though, and move from one ice floe to another. Even though they are amazing swimmers, with water-repellent coats and partially webbed paws, the bears prefer to use chunks of ice as rafts to get around! The cold, windy, and ice-covered terrain of the Arctic is a polar bear paradise! Polar bears hiss like cats when they're mad!

Polar Bears are large, meat-eating bears who are well-adapted for life in their frozen Arctic environment. They are powerful swimmers who hunt seals in the water. Polar bears can run in bursts up to 25 mph (40 kph). Anatomy : Polar Bears are up to 10 feet (3 m) long and weigh about 1,700 pounds (770 kg); males are bigger than females. Polar bears have a small head, powerful jaws, and a black nose and tongue. They have a strong sense of smell. They have 42 teeth; the tail is small and flat. They have wide front paws with slightly webbed toes that help them swim. These bears paddle with their front feet and steer with the hind feet. Fur and Skin : Polar Bears have two types of fur. They have thick, woolly fur close to the skin that keeps them warm. They also have hollow guard hairs that stick up and protect the bears from getting wet. These guard hairs are like drinking straws and are clear-colored (not white). The white-looking coat camouflages them well in the snow and ice. Under the fur, Polar Bears have black skin. They also have a thick layer of fat (up to 4 inches thick) under the skin that helps keep them warm. Habitat and Range : Polar Bears live in icy Arctic areas of Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Norway, and Russia. They spend much of their time swimming in frigid seas.

The oldest known polar bear fossil is less than 100000 years old. polar bearsprobably developed during the Pleistocene era from an ancestral brown bear.
http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/PolarBears/pbscientific.html
I. Scientific Classification. A. Order - Carnivora.
The scientific order Carnivora includes bears, dogs, cats, raccoons, otters, weasels, and their relatives. All typical carnivores have well developed claws and a pair of specialized cheek teeth for cutting hard foods. B. Family - Ursidae.
All bears belong to this family. The family is divided into three subfamilies, Ursinae (black bears, brown bears, polar bears, sloth bears, and sun bears), Tremarctinae (spectacled bears), and Ailuropodinae (giant pandas). C. Genus, species - Ursus maritimus. 1. There are five other species in the genus Ursus: brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, sun bears, and sloth bears. Species can be distinguished by size, build, coloration, and habitat. Ursus maritimus is Latin for "sea bear". D. Fossil record.
The oldest known polar bear fossil is less than 100,000 years old. Polar bears probably developed during the Pleistocene era from an ancestral brown bear. Polar bears and brown bears are still closely related; when cross-bred, they produce fertile offspring.
