Giant Panda Skeleton Found in 4,000-Year-Old Tomb February 23, 2005 - Reuters The skeleton of a giant panda has been found in a 4,000-year-old tomb in central China, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday, adding that the now-endangered animals were apparently being hunted at that time. Wu Xianzhu, of the Hubei Provincial Archaeology Research Institute, said pigs and dogs had been used in burials as "funerary objects" since the early New Stone Age, dating back about 8,000 years. "Burying the giant pandas with the dead shows that ancient people had close contact with the creatures," he was quoted as saying. The No. 77 tomb, in the Guanzhuangping Ruins of Zigui County, is the only tomb to have been found with panda remains. "When the tomb was first excavated in 2001, the animal remains found were believed to be the bone of the lower jaw of a pig. But with further research, archaeologists decided that the bone belonged to a giant panda," Wu was quoted as saying. Panda bones had been unearthed from other ruins from the same period, indicating that pandas were hunted by human beings at the time, it said. Pandas have boosted their numbers in the wild by almost half to about 1,600 in just a few years thanks to enlarged habitat and improved ecosystems, Xinhua said last month.

News from the Fujifilm Giant Panda Habitat September 18: Cub is One Big Boy Mei Xiang spent 45 minutes in the grotto outdoors yesterday, beginning at 2:30 p.m. when she enjoyed a fruitcicle. Afterwards, she began to eat the ornamental grasses growing around the entrance to the grotto. At this time of year, grasses store sugars in the base of the plant in preparation for winter. Over the next few weeks, both adult pandas will break off and consume bunches of grass, leaving most of the upper parts of the plant. The cub is bigger than he was yesterday! We all think he might weigh ten pounds now. His growth rate is much faster than that of any other cub for which weight data have been recorded. He may take after his grandfather, Pan Pan, a very large male panda living at Wolong who weighs about 300 pounds. We all think our cub is way more advanced than any other cub, even without the weigh data! Help Us Protect Giant Pandas We need your help to support ongoing research and conservation projects by National Zoo scientists to protect giant pandas at the Zoo and in their native China. You can help support these conservation efforts by giving to the Giant Panda Conservation Fund.

Ursodeoxycholic acid in the Ursidae: biliary bile acids of bears, pandas, and related carnivores
LR Hagey, DL Crombie, E Espinosa, MC Carey, H Igimi and AF Hofmann
Department of Medicine, University of California, San Diego, La Jolla 92093-0813. The biliary bile acid composition of gallbladder bile obtained from six species of bears (Ursidae), the Giant panda, the Red panda, and 11 related carnivores were determined by reversed phase liquid chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Bile acids were conjugated solely with taurine (in N-acyl linkage) in all species. Ursodeoxycholic acid (3 alpha, 7 beta-dihydroxy-5 beta-cholan-24-oic acid) was present in all Ursidae

Bears
Easier - A bear is a large, heavy and powerful animal with thick, shaggy fur and very short tail. Bears are omnivorous. They may eat plants, honey, insects, fish, and small animals. There are several kinds of bears, such as a brown bear, black bear, polar bear, and a grizzly bear. Harder Bears live alone; they never gather in groups except during the summer mating season when a pair may be together for a month. The solitary female gives birth to one to four cubs during the winter sleep period. Cubs grow rapidly but remain with their mother for one or two years. Bears often spend much of their winter sleeping, a state that some call hibernation. Other scientists maintain that bears do not truly hibernate because their body temperature does not drop greatly and some become active on mild days. Zoologists usually recognize eight species of bears with several subspecies or varieties. The main types are brown bears, American black bears, Asiatic black bears, panda bears, polar bears, sun bears, sloth bears, and spectacled bears. Until recently, some zoologists maintained that pandas were part of the raccoon family or belonged to their own mammal family. However, genetic testing now indicates that pandas are indeed bears.

SUBFAMILY AILUROPODINAE
Ailuropoda melanoleuca David, 1869
From Ian Stirling, ed. Bears, Majestic Creatures of the Wild
Emmaus, Pennsylvania: Rodale Press, 1993. 240 pages.
APPEARANCE The sharply contrasting black and white coloration, added to the stocky characteristic shape of a bear, makes the giant panda one of the most recognizable animals in the world. The head, top of the neck and rump are white, whi le small patches of fur around the eyes, the ears, shoulders, front legs, and rear legs are black. When compared with other bears, the head of the giant panda is large in relation to its body. The front paw has six digits as a result of the radial sesamoid, the wrist bone, becoming extended to form an awkward, but functional, opposable thumb. The male genitalia are small and pointed to the rear, w hich is more similar to the red panda (Ailurus fulgens)than to other bears.
SIZE Adult giant pandas range in body length from about 160 to 190 centimeters (64 to 76 inches). Males are slightly longer than females, have stronger forelegs, and are 10 to 20 percent heavier. In the wild males weigh from 85 to 125 kilograms (190 to 275 pounds), while females range between 70 and 100 kilograms (155 to 220 pounds). At birth, cubs weigh only 85 to 140 grams (3 to 5 ounces).
HABITAT Giant pandas live at an altitude of between 1,200 and 3,500 meters (4,000 and 11,500 feet) in mountain forests that are characterized by dense stands of bamboo. Home ranges average 8.5 square kilometers (3.3 square miles) for ma les and 4.6 square kilometers (1.8 square miles) for females.
