You are here: BBC Animals Giant panda Ailuropoda melanoleuca Despite being one of the most popular of all animals, the giant panda is rare and elusive. Famous for their love of bamboo, little else is known about their behaviour in the wild, and their breeding success in captivity is poor. Life span 25-30 years. Statistics Body length: 160-190cm, Weight: male: 85-125kg, female: 70-100kg. Physical Description They are white with black eye patches and black ears, legs, feet, chest and shoulders. The fur is dense to protect the panda from the cold and damp climate in which they live. They are heavy-bodied with a large head and rounded ears. Distribution Giant pandas live in south western China. They have the most restricted distribution of all bears. Habitat They are limited to bamboo thickets in mountainous regions between altitudes of 1200 and 3500m. Diet Ninety nine per cent of a panda's diet is made up of 30 species of bamboo. The remaining one per cent is made up of other plants and meat. Their digestion of bamboo is very inefficient; pandas only digest about 20 per cent of the dry matter of bamboo, whereas most herbivores assimilate about 80 per cent. This means that they must eat large amounts to obtain their energy requirements. They can eat between 12 and 38kg of bamboo shoots, leaves and stems per 24 hour period.

Appearance
The adult panda, weighing about 200 to 300 pounds (90 to 140 kilograms), has a white heavy body, black legs, and a broad band of black across its shoulders. It has a massive round head, short snout, and small, round black ears. The panda has a white face with black patches around each eye. The panda usually grows to about 5 to 6 feet (1.5 to 1.8 meters) in length, measures 4 and a half feet high, and has a short tail. They have plantigrade feet, that is, both heel and toes make contact with the ground when walking, in a manner similar to humans. Comparisions are being made between pandas and bears. In fact, some people called pandas "panda bears". If you look at a panda, you may think that it is a bear; however, there are differences in skull structure, teeth and behavior that eliminate it from the bear species.
Habitat
Pandas live in bamboo forests on upper mountain slopes of western and southwestern China. The size of their home range, when compared to the home ranges of bear species, is quite small. The panda's home range, in general, will vary from 3.8 to 6.5 square kilometers, or 1.5 to 2.5 square miles; it shares its range with other pandas. Female pandas tend to stay in smaller ranges than males do. The female's range is only about 30 to 40 hectares(75 to 100 acres), which is small in comparison with the male's range which is larger and overlaps the home ranges of several females.

News of Panda Birth Sparks Swarm at Zoo
Even Without a Peek, Visitors Thrilled
By Yolanda Woodlee Washington Post Staff Writer Sunday, July 10, 2005; Page A10 Darlene Stewart vividly recalls a week ago when she was told to close the Panda House because the female giant panda might be getting ready to deliver. Then nothing happened. For seven days, Stewart anxiously anticipated a birth. Stewart, an employee of the Friends of the National Zoo, knew that zoo officials were not positive the giant panda was pregnant, but this mother of three was certain that Mei Xiang was about to give birth.

When they had gone as far as the barriers would allow, they began jumping and bobbing for a look and a picture of the Zoo's latest acquisition. In nearby enclosures the current resident bears gathered to discuss the new arrival. "Well, I don't know what the big to-do is about; a bear is a bear." Stated Jake, the skeptical Black Bear. "He'd better not try getting any of my food," threatened Zeb, the Grizzly. Nanoo, the Polar Bear, popped her head up from her icy pond long enough to caution the others: "Cool it, guys. Let's just watch and see what this unknown bear is like." That evening, when the zoo closed and the irritating flash bulbs stopped popping, the "Legion Bears" (or so they called themselves) began their clandestine study of the newest addition. Jake, the smaller bear, stood on the shoulders of Zeb and peered into the neighboring dwelling.
"Looks like it's asleep," he whispered. "And, oh wait, I think there's at least two of them, a white one and a black one." "What else can you see?" asked Sarah, the inquisitive Brown Bear. "I see some tall, funny looking grass. Kinda reminds me of the zoo keeper's lawn furniture. And there's a sign by the rail that says, 'Da Xiong Mao, Giant Panda,' whatever that is." Since there was nothing more in view at night, the bears returned to their individual homes to consider what they had learned. Early the next morning they were again at their posts, staking out the interloper. Jake first reported the news that there were not two bears, one white and one black, but rather one bear with both colors on its fur. Its ears, legs, arms, shoulders, and eyes were black while its body and face were white.

http://www.oaklandnet.com/parks/news/011405c.asp
home welcome parks customer service ... home Zoo may welcome pandas Posted in the Contra Costa Times on Friday, January 14, 2005 By Chris Metinko By early 2006, the Oakland Zoo may be the new home of two giant panda bears, making it one of only five zoos in the U.S. to host the furry Chinese imports. But are the Oakland hills a desirable place for the rare, prized and popular black-and-white bears from China's Sichuan Province? Do conditions in the East Bay lend themselves to happy, healthy pandas? Experts at zoos with pandas believe the answer could be a resounding yes. "Oakland seems to have the climate you would need," said Jinping Yu, a conservation biologist who works with Zoo Atlanta's two panda bears. "Pandas have strict temperature requirements, but Oakland seems to have a good climate." Yu said the bears like a temperature between 65 and 69 degrees. Oakland's climate also would allow the zoo to grow bamboo, the main component of a panda's diet. Adult giant panda bears can eat upwards of 80 pounds of the plants' shoots daily. "Bamboo is so low in nutrients, pandas have to eat a lot of it to get their daily fill of everything," said Joel Parrott, executive director at the Oakland Zoo. "You need a lot of it on hand. But we could grow it here."

Life UPDATED: 10:17, October 21, 2004 Panda love in the air, bears seek new mates Some of China's giant pandas are on the move, flying off to new cities where their keepers hope the endangered bears will soon be exchanging loving glances with new bears. And if that leads to some mating... well all the better. Chinese scientists are betting on it, predicting that resulting panda offspring could positively affect the diversity of the cherished species' gene pool. Here's how it's planned: three giant pandas from the Beijing Zoo were sent to Wolong, Southwest China's Sichuan Province yesterday and will stay there for at least several years. In exchange, three giant pandas from Wolong will be flown to Beijing on Friday and settle down in their new home at the Beijing Zoo. Wolong has a famous giant panda habitat where the world-renowned Giant Panda Conservation and Research Centre is located.

RSS But officials at the animal parks say they spend millions of dollars more than they take in on the rare bear, whose appeal has not boosted visitor numbers and souvenir sales as much as hoped. After the first rush and long lines to see newly arrived pandas, the zoos' experience is that attendance returns to normal. A cub will reignite the crowds, but only temporarily. Meanwhile, the expense of keeping pandas is high: $1 million a year to China to borrow the animals, extensive outlays for research required by the federal import permit, construction expenses for exhibits and spending on basic care. The four zoos, Washington, Atlanta, San Diego and Memphis, Tenn., collectively spent $33 million more on pandas from 2000-03 than they received in revenue from exhibiting them, according to figures compiled by Zoo Atlanta chief executive Dennis Kelly. Corporate and individual donations reduced the loss to $4 million, he said.
