Bamboo Bears
A baby's arrival is always a big event. But rarely is a newborn greeted by international headlines and a world eager to follow every twitch of its four-ounce, fist-sized body.
Hua Mei's birth made international headlines. On August 21, 1999, however, animal lovers the world over rejoiced as Hua Mei became one of just a handful of baby giant pandas ever to be born in captivity. This week, NATURE's THE PANDA BABY tells the inspiring story of this pint-sized arrival the product of years of focused and often frustrating work by scientists and conservationists in China and at the World-Famous San Diego Zoo in California.
Native to the misty bamboo forests of central China, giant pandas are among the best known and most endangered animals in the world. Scientists have named them Ailuropoda melanoleuca, meaning "black and white cat-footed animal." In China, they are known as Daxiongmao, which means "large bear cat."
But conservationists estimate that only about 1,000 of the big black and white bamboo-eating bears remain in the wild in China, where they are threatened by habitat loss and hunting. Another 140 live in breeding facilities and zoos, with about 20 of those captive bears living outside their homeland. In the United States, just three zoos in Atlanta, San Diego, and Washington, D.C. shelter pandas. The animals are precious, with the zoos paying up to $1 million a year to the Chinese government for the privilege of "borrowing" the animals for display and study.

The Giant Panda The giant panda is a bear. There is much discussion about whether they are bears, raccoons, or their own species. They share some features of bears and some features of raccoons. The giant panda does not hibernate during the winter. Due to their leaner diets, they do not build up the excess fat needed to hibernate. Also, they live in a habitat zone where food is available all year round. The panda is also a symbol of peace in China. Humans are the giant pandas only enemy. The Chinese government has taken steps to protect these endangered animals.
Facts
Habitat:
The Giant Panda lives in the Chinese mountain ranges that have dense forests of bamboo. Diet: Giant pandas are classified as carnivores (meat-eating
mammals). While bamboo represents 99% of their diet they have also
been known to eat fish, rodents, vines, mushrooms and rice grass. The panda assumes a sitting position to eat. Their unique forepaws have
an enlarged wristbone that they can flex like a thumb. This allows them
to direct bamboo stalks to their mouths where they strip off bites with
their teeth. About 12 hours each day are spent feeding and they

They will whey up to 276 pounds and males wheighing 10% to 20% more than females. With few other enimies other than people the lifespan of a wild Panda is about 25 years or more. Giant pandas bears have a massive head, heavy body, short tail, rounded ears and plantigrade feet (i.e., both heel and toe make contact with the ground when walking in a manner similar to humans). The Panda lives in six small areas located in China . In China they call the Panda "Xiongmao", which means Giant Cat Bear. The Panda was believed to have magical powers that could ward off natural disasters and evil spirits. Writings about the Pandas can be traced back 3,000 years. They were even kept as pets by Chinese Emperors. The Panda was first introduced to the Western world in 1869 by a French missionary. He sent a pelt to a Museum in Paris. The giant panda bear only exists today in six small areas located in inland China. The habitat, suitable for the bamboo on which it survives, is a cold, damp coniferous forest. The elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet high. In most of the areas in which they still roam wild, they must compete with farmers who farm the river valleys and the lower slopes of the mountains.

Giant Panda Bears
(Ailuropoda melanoleuca) Launched January 21, 1996 Last update March 25, 1996
The "Xiongmao" Bear
"Xiongmao", the Chinese name for the giant panda means "giant cat bear". Chinese books, written over 3,000 years ago, talk of the giant panda. Even then, it was believed to be endowed with mystical powers capable of warding off natural disasters and evil spirits. The scientific name for giant pandas, Ailuropoda melanoleuca, simply means black and white bear.
For centuries, the giant panda bear has been considered to be very special and was kept in captivity as the pet of ancient Chinese emperors. Since its introduction to the western world in 1869 by a French missionary who shipped back a pelt to the Museum of Natural History in Paris, it has become the most revered animal in all the world.
Population and Distribution The giant panda bear only exists today in six small areas located in inland China. The habitat, suitable for the bamboo on which it survives, is a cold, damp coniferous forest. The elevation ranges from 1,200 to 3,400 metres ( 4,000 to 11,000 feet) high. In most of the areas in which they still roam wild, they must compete with farmers who farm the river valleys and the lower slopes of the mountains.
It is estimated that there are somewhere around 700 and 1,000 giant pandas still alive in the wild. Because of their reliance on bamboo as their primary food, they will remain in significant danger unless their present habitat is expanded. The differing varieties of bamboo go through periodic die-offs as part of their renewal cycle. Without the ability to move to new areas which have not been affected, starvation and death will certainly occur for the giant panda. Such die-offs of the bamboo also put the giant pandas in more direct contact with farmers and poachers as the bears try to find new areas in which to feed.

Giant Pandas ( Ailuropoda melanoleuca) date back two to three million years. Ancient Chinese emperors kept pandas because they were believed to ward off evil spirits as well as natural disasters. There is an ancient Chinese story about how giant pandas got their unique markings. A young girl who was a friend of these bears died and the pandas were struck with sorrow. They wept at her funeral and rubbed their eyes with their arms. The dark color from their armbands was wiped onto their eyes. The bears then hugged themselves and marked their ears, shoulders, hind legs and rumps, resulting in the pattern seen today. The Giant Panda population is closely tied to bamboo abundance and vice versa because pandas help to distribute the bamboo seeds. However, as panda numbers dwindle so does the bamboo, making it harder for them to find food. As the bamboo dies out, the panda population falls. There are very few Pandas left in the wild, only between 600 - 1000. Combined with high infant mortality, their survival is seriously threatened and they are considered an endangered species.
