Panda Information Coloring Printout Labeled Coloring Printout Unlabeled ... on the Web Pandas Giant pandas are black-and-white Chinese bears that are on the verge of extinction. These large, cuddly-looking mammals have a big head, a heavy body, rounded ears, and a short tail. The Chinese people call the panda "Da xiong mao," which means "giant bear cat" in Chinese. The panda is a symbol of peace in China. This bear is quite different from other bears. It has unusual cat-like eyes, and its front paws have an opposable "thumb." Female pandas are called sows, males are called boars, and the young are called cubs. EYES Most bears' eyes have round pupils. The exception is the giant panda, whose pupils are vertical slits, like cats' eyes. These unusual eyes inspired the Chinese to call the panda the "giant cat bear."

The Panda Bear
The Panda Bear is a probably the most famous Endangered Animal. The Panda lives in six small areas located in China . In China they call the Panda "Xiongmao", which means Giant Cat Bear. The Panda was believed to have magical powers that could ward off natural disasters and evil spirits. Writings about the Pandas can be traced back 3,000 years. They were even kept as pets by Chinese Emperors. The Panda was first introduced to the Western world in 1869 by a French missionary. He sent a pelt to a Museum in Paris. Panda Bears eat over fifteen different kinds of Bamboo. Because of a inefficient intestinal system the Panda must feed for 12 to 16 hours a day, they can consume 22 to 40 pounds of Bamboo each day. When they eat fresh Bamboo shoots they eat about 84 pounds every day. The giant panda bear only exists today in six small areas located in inland China. The habitat, suitable for the bamboo on which it survives, is a cold, damp coniferous forest. The elevation ranges from 4,000 to 11,000 feet high. In most of the areas in which they still roam wild, they must compete with farmers who farm the river valleys and the lower slopes of the mountains. It is estimated that there are somewhere around 700 and 1,000 giant pandas still alive in the wild. Because they rely on bamboo as their main food they will remain in danger unless their habbitat is expanded. The differing varieties of bamboo go through periodic die-offs as part of their renewal cycle. Without the ability to move into new areas that have not been affected many Pandas will starve to death. When die-offs occur the bears that do try to find a new place to feed often run into farmers and pochers.

Many scientists classify the Giant Panda as a raccoon, rather than a bear. The Panda's forepaw is different from the other bears. It has an elongated wrist bone that provides a sixth finger, giving the Panda the ability to grasp bamboo stems, its main food.
  • Panda Bears at the Smithsonian National Zoo
In their nearly 30-year continuing study of reproductive behavior of giant pandas, the Smithsonian National Zoo welcomed new arrivals Tian Tian (male) and Mei Xiang (female) on December 6, 2000 from the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Sichuan Province.

"What animal is black and white and loved all over the world? If you guessed the giant panda, you're right! The giant panda is also known as the panda bear, bamboo bear, or in Chinese as Daxiongmao, the "large bear cat." In fact, its scientific name means "black and white cat-footed animal."

The giant panda itself appeared suddenly during the late Pliocene or early

In the second century AD the giant panda was a rare and semi-divine animals

then capital Xian held nearly 40 rare animal specials, of which the panda
was the most highly treasured, and the poet Bai Juyi (AD 772-846) credited

skins appear scattered throughout the Chinese imperial records, as gifts or tribute on great occasions of states. But the animal was totally unknown outside the secretive "Middle Kingdom" until the declining Qing Dynasty was slowly forced to open its doors to trade and Christianity towards the end of the nineteenth century.

High in dense bamboo forests in the misty,
Pandas eat almost nothing but bamboo shoots and leaves. Occasionally they eat other vegetation, fish, or small animals, but bamboo accounts for 99 percent of their diets.
There are many species of bamboo. Only a few of these grow at the high altitudes where pandas live today. A panda should have at least two bamboo species where it lives, or it will starve.
