Koala Bear CLICK image for a video story on the koala (By David McCormick In the trees of eastern Australia lives one of the most lovable of the continent's unique animals - the koala bear. Koalas, with their broad face, big, round nose and fluffy ears, are favourites of the plush toy industry - many teddy bears are modelled after the furry animals. But the "bears" actually aren't bears at all - they are marsupials. The koala's pouch is unique from that of other tree-dwelling marsupials because it opens at the rear. Female koalas have only one baby at a time, and the offspring spends up to seven months in the pouch. After that, it clings to its mother's back until it's about one year old. Koalas have short legs and large feet. Each foot has five toes, two of which are opposable to the other three. This allows koalas to cling tightly to tree branches, which is where they spend virtually all of their time. Even when asleep, koalas curl up on tree limbs, firmly grasping the branch with their feet. Koalas, which grow to between 65 and 80 centimetres long and have an average life span of 13 to 18 years, eat only the leaves of eucalyptus trees. And once they find a tree they like, they'll often spend days there.

koala Facts from Sydney Australia, The cutest koala bear kangaroo gifts and toys. A great gift idea for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
http://www.koalaexpress.com.au/facts1.htm
Koalas aren't bears. They aren't even related to bears. The koala is related to the kangaroo and the wombat. The koala is a mammal. The reason the koala is called a koala bear is because the koala looks like a teddy bear. The koala's scientific name is Phasclarctos cinereus. Now there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild! Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of Australian koalas has dropped by 90% in less than a decade!
This is due to the destruction of the koala's natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia. Logging, agriculture and urban development have not only reduced the area available to them, but added other dangers. The koala's habitat has been criss-crossed by roads, resulting in many road kills and attacks by neighboring pet dogs are frequent. Disease, too, has taken its toll on the koala... By purchasing one of our cuddly Australian made gifts you are helping preserve the natural habitat of the Australian Koala. We make regular donations to the preservation of the Australian Koala.

The Koala Phascolarctos cinereus ; sometimes also spelled Phascolarct u s cinereus ) is a thickset arboreal marsupial herbivore endemic to Australia , and the only representative of its family Phascolarctidae The koala's scientific name comes from the Greek phaskolos meaning "pouch" and; arktos meaning "bear". The cinereus part is Latin and means "ash-colored". Some people refer to the koala as a koala bear—this is technically incorrect, since koala is not part of the bear family. The word "koala" comes from an aboriginal word meaning "does not drink". Koalas are found all along the eastern coast of Australia from near Adelaide to the base of the Cape York Peninsula , and as far into the hinterland as there is enough rainfall to support suitable forest. A koala bear is probably one of the most docile and cuddly animals on earth. No great adventures in my quest for these photos, but I would like to thank the West Australia Perth zoo for their cooperation and assistance. Its easy to understand why so many people love koala bears. A koala is so timid and trusting, unlike any other animal I can think of. I hope to have links to many interesting web pages of koala information. And, yes, we do know that Koalas are not technically bears (they're "marsupials" ). However that's what most yanks like to call them. Stock photography Koala images are available for commercial license . After viewing the images be sure to see the links to other sites below. Jessica Well, Jessica, we don't want to cause PANDAmonium, but here are the GRIZZLY details: Koalas are not bears at all, but upstanding members of the marsupial family. Like other marsupials, momma koalas carry their babies in roomy pouches in their tummies (think of it as a backwards fannypack!) until they are big and strong enough to care for themselves.
P.S. A kangaroo's a marsupial, too.

koala kō¤ lə ) , arboreal marsupial , or pouched mammal, Phascolarctos cinereus, native to Australia. Although it is sometimes called koala bear, or Australian bear, and is somewhat bearlike in appearance, it is not related to true bears. Once abundant, it is now found in much-reduced numbers in Queensland, Victoria, and New South Wales. It has thick, grayish fur, a tailless body 2 to 2 ft (60–75 cm) long, a protuberant, curved, black nose, and large, furry ears. The five sharply clawed toes on each foot enable it to grasp and climb. A slow-moving, nocturnal animal, the koala has perhaps the most specialized diet of any living mammal; it feeds on leaves and shoots of a particular stage of maturation from particular species of eucalyptus. The single cub is about in (1.9 cm) long at birth and is nursed in the mother's pouch, from which it emerges for the first time when about six months old. Until it is about eight months old it continues to ride in the pouch, and until about a year of age it is carried on its mother's back or in her arms. The harmless and defenseless koala has been ruthlessly hunted, chiefly for fur but also for food; disease and the clearing of the eucalyptus forests have also taken a heavy toll. Protective measures have been adopted to prevent its extinction. The koala is classified in the phylum
