[About Us] Koala Bears - Phascolarctos cinereus - Baby Koalas Well, Koala Bears (Phascolarctos cinereus) are not even true bears, but how could we not write about them after discussing the two types of Panda Bears. Koala Bears are actually classified as marsupials , which are extremely far removed from true bears. Like the Giant Panda Bear , and the Red Panda , the imagery of a Koala hugging a tree, is often associated directly with wildlife conservation.

The males are larger than females.
Southern koalas are 30% larger than the Northern koalas Koala's fur is thick soft and pleasant to touch. Ears have long white hairs on the tips. Koalas can live as long as 17 years, however males life expectancy is less than 10 years (due to injuries during fights, dogs and cars). Females generally live longer. Koalas living in an undisturbed habitat would have a greater life expectancy than those living in suburbia. Koalas prefer to move around just after sunset spending daytimes asleep in the fork of a tree. Koala spends sleeping 75% of its time. Just after sunset koalas move around and can often be heard "barking" aggressively at other koalas.

    General Information
  • History of the Koala
T here were once several different kinds of koala all but one of which had died out. The earliest known member of the koala family was a browser, which lived 15 millions years ago. Evidence of a 'giant' koala, twice the size of its modern descendant, exists in fossils dating back more than 40,000 years.
  • The Australian Koala Page
You may think a Koala is a bear, but it isn't. In fact the Koala has no relation to a bear. It is a distant cousin to the Wombat and both the Koala and the Wombat have fossil history over 15 million years. The Koala is Australia's most popular and most loved marsupial mammal.
  • How Long Does a Koala Live?
Koalas, together with wombats, their closest relatives, belong to the super-family of Vombatoidea. It is believed that some 25 million years ago, they shared a common ancestor. Even today, despite the differences in habits and structure, koalas and wombats have many common anatomical features, pointing to a shared past.
  • Koalas The koala is a small bear-like, tree-dwelling, herbivorous marsupial which averages about 9kg (20lb) in weight. It's fur is thick and usually ash grey with a tinge of brown in places.

But koalas are not bears. They are members of a group of pouched animals called marsupials. Marsupials include kangaroos, wallabies, wallaroos, wombats, possums, and opossums. "Americans are captivated by koalas. However, because our familiarity comes from television, magazines and zoos, most of us have never seen wild koalas and would be surprised to learn that, just like many of our own species, their future is in jeopardy because of habitat destruction," said Jamie Rappaport Clark, director of the Fish and Wildlife Service, the principal federal agency responsible for conservation. The United States and Australia are currently working together to save the koalas from extinction.

Dateline: 06/21/00 The teddy bear is sometimes questioned with a possible relationship to the Australian Koala "bear." The origin of the teddy bear is somewhat in dispute. Most believe the teddy bear was contemporaneously created in both Germany and the United States. That's not so hard to believe (for two guys in different parts of the world took gasoline engines and turned carriages into automobiles). So, why not teddy bears? Well, it probably did happen that way. The official year is agreed upon: 1903. The Leipzig Toy Fair of Germany was the place 3,000 of the friendly little bruins were first ordered for the U.S. market. The name ‘Teddy’ is a little different situation!

Actually, a Koala isn't a bear, it's a marsupial (but most people call it a Koala bear)! If you want to skip the story and just get to the craft, scroll about half way down this web page. (But the story's cute and rather educational!)
    STORY:
My daughter went to the zoo to visit the Koala bears with her daycare class the other week. The Koala bears are visiting from another zoo, so the kids made a special trip to see them. When she came home that night she asked Daddy and I if we knew what baby koala bears eat. Being "oh so wise" parents, we decided to amaze her with our vast knowledge of the world and simultaneously answered "Eucalyptus leaves!". Tasha smiled her, infamous "gotcha" smile and said "Nope, they eat poop." Quite convinced that she had somehow horribly misunderstood someone at the zoo, we smiled our "condescending parents" smile and replied that we were quite sure she was mistaken but that we'd ask her daycare instructor the next day to clarify things for us.

    SAVE THE KOALA!
Now there are only 2,000 to 8,000 koalas in the wild!
Although not officially classified as endangered, the population of the beloved koala has dropped by 90% in less than a decade! This is due to the destruction of their natural habitat, a narrow crescent on the eastern coast of Australia. Logging, agriculture and urban development have not only reduced the area available to them, but added other dangers. Their habitat has been criss-crossed by roads, resulting in many road kills, and attacks by neighboring pet dogs now are frequent. Disease, too, has taken its toll.
