KOALA BEARS
Koala bears are such interesting animals. They are so cute and cuddly like toy teddy bears with their big eyes and fuzzy ears. You might feel like hugging them but be careful for some are cranky. Fully grown koalas are about two feet long, covered with thick, soft gray-brown fur and have round faces, saucer-sized ears and long black rubbery-looking noses.
Koalas are found naturally only in forests of Australia. They like to sleep in trees where they can find their favorite tasty eucalyptus leaves. They have to be careful that they don't eat leaves with too much acid because it will poison them.
The female matures when she is four years old. When her babies are born, they look like worms, naked, blind and pink. They crawl into their mother's pouch to nurse and stay there for six months. You don't even know they are there until they stick out their furry little heads. They crawl onto their mother's back, but if they are frightened they cry like babies and crawl back into the pouch. Gradually the young females will move to other trees, but the males might hang around too long, then their father has to give them a sharp cuff to make them move out.
Like all animals, koalas have enemies, too. Their worst enemies are domestic dogs, forest fires and man. Men like to kill them for their beautiful furs which they will then sell.

Koala Bears are Australian mammals that looks like teddy bears. A full grown koala is about a yard long. The koala baby rides piggyback on the mother while it moves through the treetops eating leaves. The baby hangs on tight. It stays with it's mother until it's about a year old. Koala Bears
The Koala has no relation to a bear. It is a distant cousin to the Wombat and both the Koala and the Wombats have fossil history over 15 million years. The Koala is Australia's most popular and most loved marsupial mammal. A wombat is a hairy marsupial mammal. It can weigh up to 39 kg and be approximately 1 meter long. They have a short 25mm tail and stumpy legs. Did you know that a wombat likes to live alone ? They do. A Wombat even has its own feeding ground. A Wombat lives in hilly forest country and it likes to burrow underground. A burrow can be as long as 20 meters. Sometimes burrows can interconnect, so whilst Wombats are loners they can show some community spirit. Wombats are nocturnal animals that eat grasses, roots and herbs after dark. There are three species of Wombats. A Koala has a woolly coat with large fluffy ears, a bulbous nose and almost no tail. A Koala is nocturnal. This means it sleeps during the day in the fork of a tree and eats after dark. Its strong claws allows it to be a strong climber. The Koala moves very slowly and some people think it is lazy. The Koala feeds on selected eucalyptus leaves. Other animals couldn't digest the oils and poisons in eucalyptus leaves, but the Koala's digestive system has evolved to accommodate this.

Frightened and helpless, a baby koala clings to a tree branch. Below, his mother screams. Searching for their dinner of eucalyptus leaves, she manages to get her head stuck in one family's fence.
For Australians, spotting a koala isn't unusual, but finding one in distress is. Desperate to save the mother koala's life, the family calls the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services. Koala rescuer Vicki Pender is sent to help.
Pender knows she must act quickly to save the terrified animal that is frantically struggling to free herself. After giving the koala a tranquilizer to calm her down, Pender carefully cuts away the fence with bolt cutters. Then she places the groggy animal in a koala carrier.
