Printed March, 1994 The Grizzly Bear is the second largest member of the bear family (Ursidae), next only to the polar bear. It has the widest distribution of any of the world's bears. Grizzlies have played a prominent role in the cultural history of North America, particularly in native Indian culture. For many people today, the Grizzly Bear is synonymous with the wilderness. As well, people have had a great influence on Grizzly Bears. They have removed them from a large portion of their historical range through habitat changes and alienation and conscious efforts to eliminate them in some areas. Although these types of interaction have occurred for centuries, much about the natural history, population regulation mechanisms and behaviour of the Grizzly Bear is poorly understood. Taxonomy and Distribution The Grizzly Bear is one of seven species of the bear family. The European brown bear is considered to be the same species as the North American grizzly, Ursus arctos.

How do you distinguish a black bear from a grizzly bear
Black and grizzly bears can often be easily confused. The following table helps to differentiate the two. While this page will help you identify bears, you will also want to learn more about bear sign and field evidence. Click here to learn how to recognize bear signs in the field
Grizzly Bears
Black Bears
Colour
Grizzly Bears vary from blonde to black in colour. They are most commonly medium to dark brown. The long guard hairs often have a lighter tip, giving the bears their 'grizzled' appearance. Black bears exhibit great variation in colour, ranging from black to light blonde. Cinnamon coloured black bears are quite common in the west. Many black bears have a light patch on the chest. The snout is usually light in colour, even in black bears.
Size
Size is a poor identifier as both bears vary greatly in size. Male grizzlies average 225 kg (500 lbs), with females averaging around 160 kg (350 lbs). Large bears may tip the scales at 360 kg (800 lbs). Black bears average 50-140 kg (110-300 lbs). Large male bears can top 180 kg (400 lbs) and may be larger than female grizzlies, so size is not an accurate indicator.

    The Grizzly Bear
is a powerful predator, capable of out sprinting a horse, and weighing as much as 350-600 pounds. Grizzlies are omnivorous, meaning they eat both meat and plants. In Yellowstone, grizzlies feed on elk, trout, bison carrion, pinenuts, grasses, roots, and berries.
Certain characteristics distinguish grizzlies from black bears. The grizzly is larger, both in girth and weight. The grizzly's coat ranges from tawny cinnamon to light brown or even black. Some grizzlies are flecked with recognizable "silver tips," creating the "grizzled" look. A feature also associated with grizzlies is the shoulder hump, and area of well- defined muscle. Another is his dish-shaped face.

Background Before Europeans arrived in North America, a vast network of grizzly bear trails existed between California and Alaska. Today the southern extent of the grizzly's range has been destroyed, largely by habitat loss from logging and urbanization. Only a few small isolated patches of habitat are presently occupied by grizzlies below the 49th parallel. [ See map of current grizzly bear range ]. This is one reason why the Great Bear Rainforest is critically important for North America's remaining grizzly bears - it is the most southerly coastal grizzly bear population remaining on the Pacific coast and acts as a stronghold for North America's remaining grizzlies.

    Grizzly Bears
On October 20, shortly after entering present day North Dakota, the expedition had their first encounter with a grizzly bear. Having heard of the strength and ferocity of these bears from the Indians, members of the expedition were curious to see and hunt one. They would get their opportunity and learn first-hand how difficult the bears were to kill. Clark wrote: In his diary on May 5, 1805 Lewis wrote of one encounter: By a week later, Lewis wrote in his diary: "I find that the curiossity of our party is pretty well satisfyed with rispect to this anamal." Bears and humans tread common ground in NATURE's "Walking with Giants: The Grizzlies of Siberia."
Jutting into the North Pacific from Siberia, Kamchatka is a rugged peninsula of volcanic craters and steep valleys. While its impenetrability once made Kamchatka the perfect home of a notorious Soviet prison camp, its isolation also has kept it a haven for one of Earth's last giants, the grizzly bear.
In fact, there are more grizzlies per square mile there than anywhere else on the planet. The discovery of this bear sanctuary gave two naturalists, Charlie Russell and Maureen Enns, the opportunity they'd been looking for to live among the grizzlies and study them in close proximity to understand their true nature.

    Arctic National Wildlife Refuge
North America's Serengeti The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is the last best place to find immense caribou herds, polar bears, grizzly bears, wolves, muskoxen, wolverines, snow geese, Arctic grayling and vast flocks of waterfowl. While the Central and Rio Grande valleys, Colorado River Delta and prairie states once supported wildlife populations rivaling or exceeding the refuge, they are today a pale remnant of their former glory. Only the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge remains intact as we enter the 21st century. Keeping it forever wild is one of the greatest gifts Americans can pass on to future generations . Located on the eastern edge of Alaska’s North Slope, the 19 million-acre wildlife refuge is the largest in the nation. Created by Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1960 with the express purpose of protecting polar bears and other wildlife, it was expanded to 19.8 million acres by Jimmy Carter with the 1980 Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act. While Carter designated 8.6 million acres of the refuge as permanently protected "wilderness," the oil lobby succeeded in keeping the fertile coastal plain out of the wilderness designation. This 1.5 million-acre area—approximately ten percent of the refuge—is nestled between the peaks of the Brooks Range and the Arctic Ocean ice pack. Known as the “1002 area,” it is crucial to wildlife and the native peoples of this region.
