Grizzly Heart:
Living Without Fear Among the Brown Bears of Kamchatka
by Charles Russell and Maureen Enns
With very generous assistance from Fred Stenson
ABOUT THIS BOOK
An absorbing first-hand account of living with bears, from the acclaimed author of The Spirit Bear. To many people, grizzlies are symbols of power and ferocity creatures to be feared and, too often, killed. But Charlie Russell, who has had a forty-year relationship with bears, holds the controversial belief that it is possible to live with and truly understand bears in the wild. And for five years now, Russell and his partner, artist and photographer Maureen Enns, have spent summers on the Kamchatka peninsula, located on the northeast coast of Russia, and home of the densest population of brown bears in the world.
Grizzly Heart tells the remarkable story of how Russell and Enns have defied the preconceptions of wildlife officials and the general public by living unthreatened and respected - among the grizzlies of Kamchatka. In an honest and immediate style, Russell tells of the trials and successes of their years in the field, from convincing Russian officials to allow them to study, to adopting three bear cubs left orphaned when their mother was killed by a hunter (and teaching these cubs how to survive in the wild), to raising environmental awareness through art.

Yellowstone grizzly bears may be delisted
November 20, 1998
Web posted at: 11:45 AM EST By Environmental News Network staff
(ENN) The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is in the process of drafting a conservation strategy for the delisting of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone area and plans to have it ready for public comment by mid-December. The environmental community is on the offensive to ensure that the bears remain protected under the Endangered Species Act until they have improved habitat and are protected from all terrain vehicle use. QUICK VOTE:
Should Yellowstone grizzly bears be taken off the endangered species list?
Yes No View Results Word of delisting the Yellowstone grizzly bears first surfaced last May when Wyoming Republican Senator Craig Thomas said he had gotten assurances from Fish and Wildlife Service Director Jamie Rappapport Clark that the agency would delist the bears within the next few years. According to environmentalists, although the Fish and Wildlife Service says the decision to delist is based on science, it appears that the agency is bending to political pressure from the oil and gas industry which wants to develop fields in the Bridger-Teton, Shoshone and Targhee National Forests.

Grizzly Bears
Warren Garst The grizzly bear ( Ursus arctos horribilis ) is a subspecies of the brown bear. At one time there were an estimated 50,000 grizzlies in North America. They once were found from the Mississippi River to the coast of California, from Mexico to Canada, but grizzlies now occupy less than 2% of that range. In the United States, where grizzlies are found in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington, and Wyoming, they are listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. Fewer than 1,100 grizzly bears can be found in the continental United States. Grizzlies are highly adaptable to various habitat types: they can flourish in forests, mountains, prairies, wetlands, and even along the shore. They will dig beds in shady spots in which to sit out the heat of the day. They hibernate in the winter when food is scarce, living off stored body fat, which not only supplies energy but also keeps them warm. However, most parts of the historic U.S. grizzly range no longer contain sufficient contiguous habitat to support a viable grizzly population. The Yellowstone area holds the most promise, but even here an important food source, the whitebark pine, is expected to be completely lost because of exotic disease and/or global climate change.

American Bison
Yellowstone is the only place in the lower 48 states where a population of wild American bison has persisted since prehistoric times, although fewer than 50 native bison remained there in . Fearing extinction , the park imported 21 bison from two privately-owned herds, as foundation stock for a bison ranching project that spanned 50 years at the Buffalo Ranch in Yellowstone's Lamar Valley. Activities there included irrigation hay -feeding, roundups, culling, and predator control, to artificially ensure herd survival. By the , some intermingling of the introduced and wild bison had begun. With protection from poaching , the native and transplanted populations increased. In , bison were transplanted to historic habitats in the Firehole River and Hayden Valley. In

    Appearance
Brown bears have coats in shades of blond, brown, black, or a combination of those colours; the long outer guard hairs are often tipped with white or silver, giving a " grizzled " appearance. Brown bears have a large hump of muscle over their shoulders which gives strength to the forelimbs for digging. The Brown Bear posesses tremendous power: a large specimen can break a bison's spine with one blow of its powerful forepaw. Their heads are large and round with a concave facial profile. In spite of their size, some have been clocked at speeds in excess of 35 miles per hour. Aside from their overwhelming strength and deceptive speed, Brown Bears are legendary for their physical stamina. They are capable of running at full speed for miles at a time without stopping. The largest subspecies of the brown bear is the Kodiak bear and Alaskan Coastal bear. It is not uncommon for a large male Kodiak to stand 10 feet in height while on its hind legs, and weigh as much as 1,500 pounds. Largest Kodiak bear ever recorded was delivered to Berlin Zoo at the weight of 1200 kg, though there are confirmations by zoo officials that Kodiak bears weigh in nearsome of 1500 kg in the zoos in Fall.

Wind River Bear Institute Home of the Karellian Bear Dogs. Visit the site to learn how Carrie Hunt and her amazing dogs are keeping grizzlies and black bears alive. They need our help. If you are looking for a good cause that is helping bears, this is one. This is a great website to test your ability to distinguish a black bear from a grizzly bear. However, allowing bear hunters to take a test on a website (as is being proposed as of November 2001) before getting a license to hunt black bears is not appropriate. Black bear hunters should be required to pass a legitimate Bear Identification Test to show they can distinguish between a grizzly bear and a black bear. It is not always easy to tell the difference. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks has been strongly "encouraged" by the Great Bear Foundation, Sierra Club Grizzly Bear Ecosystems Project, and others to take action to stop black bear hunters from killing grizzly bears. What is really needed is a required training/certification program before a license to hunt black bears can be obtained. If grizzly bears continue to be killed by black bear hunters, look for stronger calls to eliminate black bear hunting in and around grizzly bear recovery areas and litigation to stop the illegal killing of grizzlies by black bear hunters.

Interior Secretary Gale Norton is stopping a citizen-run initiative to bring grizzly bears back to public land in the remote Bitterroot Mountains of Idaho and Montana. Scientists say this important project – already approved by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service after seven years of planning – holds the key to the long-term survival of grizzlies in the Lower 48 states. Sign a petition to help save bears Read Defenders of Wildlife President Rodger Schlickeisen's statement on Secretary of the Interior’s Rejection of Selway-Bitterroot Grizzly Plan The plan entrusts unprecedented authority to local citizens. A citizen management committee would run the program and oversee the release of bears into the 15 million-acre Selway-Bitterroot wilderness. Even the timber industry, mill workers and former Montana Gov. Marc Racicot are behind it. So are nearly all the major newspapers in Idaho and Montana. But Norton is trying to scuttle this innovative, grass-roots plan to save the grizzly bear – the noble symbol of the American West. WHAT YOU CAN DO: Help save grizzly bears from extirpation. The public comment period has ended on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife plan to restore grizzly bears to the Selway-Bitterroot wilderness. You can still take action by sending your comments to Interior Secretary Norton, urging her to allow this critical project to go forward.
