Big game hunter, Jay Link,
with his 2005 trophy brown bear W elcome to Alaska Game hunting. We hunt all species of Alaskan big game animals, including back pack sheep hunts, interior grizzly bears and coastal brown bears. Dall sheep and interior bears are hunted in Unit 13. Brown bears, moose and caribou are hunted in units 9 or 17. The key to a successful Alaskan hunt is careful and thorough planning and preparation. Hunting in Alaska is a very different experience than hunting in any other state. The mystique of Alaskan hunting is well earned. The country is vast; the wilderness remote; and the game animals magnificent. Animals such as the barren-ground caribou, sheep, brown bears, black bears and Alaskan moose provide many hunters with a once-in-a-lifetime experience. However, these uniquely Alaskan animals are not found in every part of the state. Even when they are abundant by Alaska standards, their population densities can be low compared to population densities of deer or elk in other states.

We recognize the critical role top predators play in maintaining the health and diversity of the wild systems to which they belong. Only now are scientists beginning to uncover the complex relationships that predators hold together in the wild. Sinapu works tirelessly to undo over a century of Western politics, aiming to restore wolves, grizzly bears, wolverines, lynx, and river otter to their rightful place in the wild. More...

44. The Bears Of Bute - Grizzly & Black Bear Wildlife Adventure Tours, Campbell Rive
Offers wildlife eco tours on Bute Inlet, home to the Homalco People, featuring grizzly and black bears. Photo gallery, tour details and location information included.
http://www.bearsofbute.com/
Welcome to BEAR COUNTRY! See grizzly and black bears on a day long Wildlife Adventure Tour from Campbell River to the wild and remote mainland coast of BC.
Among the narrow inlets that reach deep into the coast mountain range of British Columbia, Canada, spectacular Bute Inlet extends as far as the Homathko Ice fields. Below the glaciers the dense forests and river estuaries of Bute are the ancestral home to the great brown bear of North America, known as the grizzly bear.
The big bears of Bute live among the tall Douglas-Firs and the Western Redcedar where they thrive along the shores of glacier fed rivers and streams teeming with fish. This prime grizzly habitat, north of the Strait of Georgia, is also the traditional land of the Homalco First Nations people.
Every year in the late summer and the early fall, the bears of Bute Inlet gather on the banks of the rivers and streams to participate in one of nature's most incredible displays - the return of the Salmon! The huge Pacific salmon return from the ocean to the fresh water streams and rivers where they spawn and finally die. One of the last challenges in the life cycle of the salmon is escaping the gathering of hungry grizzly and black bears on the river banks, preparing for the long, cold winter ahead by gorging themselves on as much fish as they can catch (and keep for themselves - when you have a concentration of grizzlies, size definitely matters).

Introduction
The grizzly is a symbol of the American wilderness. Lewis and Clark found a healthy grizzly population when they explored Idaho's Bitterroot Mountains in the early 19th century. As the nation expanded westward, grizzly numbers plummeted due to unchecked hunting and trapping. The grizzly is now "threatened" in the lower 48 states. Photos:
During winter, a bear may lose from 15 to 27 percent of its pre-denning body weight.
Latin Name: Ursus arctos Family Name: Ursidae (Bear) Related Species:
Brown bears and grizzly bears are the same species. In North America, bears that live in interior areas are commonly called grizzlies, whereas those in coastal areas are called brown bears. Coastal bears are typically larger and darker, due to salmon and rich coastal foods. The grizzly got its name because of its grizzled, silvertipped coat. Black bears ( Ursus americanus ) are a forest-dwelling species that, in part of its range, overlaps with grizzly bears. Typically smaller with shorter front claws and without a shoulder hump, black bears may be black, brown, cinnamon, or even pure white (the white form is in a coastal area of British Columbia). Estimated Population: There are about 1,200 grizzlies in the lower 48 states, roughly 31,700 in Alaska, and approximately 25,000 in Canada.

47. Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project
Studying effects of human developments and activities on grizzly bears in the Central Rockies Ecosystem.
http://www.canadianrockies.net/Grizzly/
"More than any species, grizzlies represent wilderness.
If the grizzly bear, with its wide ranging habits, can survive,
then many other species will survive."
WELCOME!
Canada’s Central Rockies Ecosystem (CRE) , which includes Banff National Park and Alberta’s Kananaskis Country, is one of the most developed landscapes in North America where grizzly bears still survive. The Eastern Slopes Grizzly Bear Project (ESGBP) was initiated in 1994 to address the urgent need for scientific information about the cumulative effect of human development and activities on grizzly bears in this area. The ESGBP actively promotes the application of this information in management and conservation contexts. Part of our mission is to make sure the information we collect about these bears – their status, the challenges they face, and what can be done to help them – is widely available. There is a range of information on this site – a grade school teacher will find fundamental information about grizzly bears to give his/her class, and a grizzly bear researcher will find copies of most of the research papers we have published.

Grizzly Bears
Ursus arctos
Grizzly bears are also called brown bears, and are found throughout the Preserve. Bears on the Seward Peninsula are not the largest members of this species, but 500 pound (230 kg.) bears can be seen here on occasion. Brown bears are most common in the mountains north of Nome and the population in the Preserve is fairly small. There are no black bears in or near the Preserve. Bears are actively hunted throughout the region and tend to be shy around people. Most visitors to the region will never see a bear. Grizzlies are omnivorous. Their diet varies by the season and includes grasses, roots, berries, nuts, insects, fish, rodents, and sometimes small and large mammals. Brown bears on the Seward Peninsula don't depend a lot on salmon like they do in other areas of the state because salmon runs here are often small and salmon streams are few. Brown bears can conceal themselves remarkably well in the low brush along hill sides. Although they will normally not attack a human, they will defend their young or their food if approached too closely. They have an excellent sense of smell, good hearing, and are extremely powerful. They are naturally curious, and caution should be taken when in their presence. Visitors planning to hike, birdwatch, or travel across country should get information on traveling though bear country before starting. Try not to surprise bears. Make noise - talk loud, use bells, or shake stones in a can to announce your presence. If you meet a bear, yield the right-of-way by moving slowly away.

Grizzly Bears are large brown bears that live in cool mountain forests and river valleys. These solitary mammals can run up to 35 mph (56 kph) for short bursts. Grizzlies are a threatened species.
Anatomy : Grizzly Bears are up to 7 feet (2.1 m) long and weigh up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg). Females are about 2/3 the size of males. Their thick fur ranges in color from black to brown to reddish brown to blond. They have dense fur close to the skin and long, coarse guard hairs that become silver tipped as the bears age, giving them a grizzled appearance (and their name). They have a big head, a long muzzle, and a large hump on their shoulder (a mass of muscles that give the front legs extra strength). Like all bears, they are plantigrade (flat-footed). The front claws are up to 4.75 inches (12 cm), almost twice as long as the rear claws. Newborns weigh only about 1 pound (0.45 kg), the size of a rat.
Behavior : These fierce predators are mostly nocturnal (more active at night). Although they sleep in dens (caves, hollow logs, or holes they dig) during the winter, they are not true hibernators and can be easily awakened.

(Ursus arctos)
(last update 2004 February)
The grizzly bear is the largest and most powerful of Alberta's carnivores. Adults weigh from 140 to 450 kg (300 to 1000 lb.); sows average about 50 kg lighter than boars. GrizzIy bears vary in color from tawny-brown to black. Often the hair is sun-bleached giving it a "grizzled" appearance. In profile, the snout rises sharply into a broad "dished" face. There is a hump of long hair on the neck and shoulders. However, this hair may be shed for a period in late spring and summer. Claws are long, curved and obvious in tracks.
